Strange NPR behavior
« on: August 09, 2020, 03:24:10 AM »
I encountered strange NPR behavior in my current game, I am not sure if it is bug, but definitely does not seem to be feature.

NPR has home system that is dead end and my fleet has control of the JP in the system that connect to it. They sent several military fleets  (around 6 or so ships each time) to kick me of the JP and they all died. After few months of calm something strange happened.

They send wave of 25 commercial ships through the waypoint, they were destroyed. After a bit of time another wave jumped, this time 23 commercial ships died in the jump. And then the third wave (23 ships) crossed and also died. Now I salvaged the wrecks and the ships were: colony ships, cargo ships and sorium harvesters. From my early sensor readings when I first discovered their homeworld this was basically their whole commercial fleet.

I do not understand why they did this, they have over 60 military ships camping other side of JP, most are missile ships so not very usefull in JP assault, but definitely better than unarmed commercial ships. And given the numbers, they would most likely push through if they jumped all of them in. I have only around 500000 tons on JP.

Anyone encountered something similar?

This sounds like an edge case for the AI.
Probably the AI has logic for how much advantage it wants before it will attack a guarded JP. And in this case the NPRs fleet is not enough, so it does not attack, even though your own estimate is they would most likely win. The AI has its own risk threshold, and this fleet does not meet it.

The AI also has logic for commercial expansion. In this case (HW in a dead end system), its only option is to expand through this JP, so it does.
Probably there is no failsafe logic for a situation like this (i.e. the AI does not think "my only option for expansion is to through this JP, but I have high certainty that this JP is guarded, therefore I should not attempt any expansion right now").

I seen this before, I destroy most of there military fleet then instead of losing there commercial fleet around there world the commercial fleet make a run for it and almost manage to run away but i didn't give them the chance to rebuild a fleet before assaulting there world.

I suppose there is some logic in it.

There is one JP out of their system, and a finite amount of TN elements in their system.

Break out by any and all means possible or fall back to Pre-TN existence eventually.

All that needs to survive the break out is 1 colony ship, 1 mine and 1 Construction Factory.

True, also the NPR diplomacy may be coded considering that commercial ships have a less threat level so it may lead them in thinking you would adopt same logic and don't fire at them?

Obviously I have no idea of what is behind only Steve could answer that.

The NPR may try to evacuate its commercial assets from a system if it perceives a serious threat to that system. This threat can be potential rather than current, based on NPR knowledge of alien race dispositions. In that case, it will use the least dangerous jump point. I hadn't accounted for the situation where the NPR had only one system and one jump point :)

I am getting the same NPR behaviour of panicked civilian ships charging into the guns of my fleet , and it's the same situation only 1 Jump point and their home system is definetly not secure as my fleet has entered their system and destroyed most of their warships.

Any chance that in 1.12 they would stay put in such a situation?

I have NPR civilians running through the most dangerous jump point - which they can't go back home through because there's no jump gate on my side.

Had this happen in 1.11.

If anything it would make more sense if they sent out the whole military fleet to escort or jump before / with the commercial ships, no?

Or maybe a forward scout or some sort of escort to protect all the slower defenseless commercial ships.
