Final Chance - Prologue
« on: December 27, 2011, 10:30:43 PM »
Forenote:

This is a well... rather long prologue. In my previous series, this would essentially count as a chapter, but the setup for the whole story-line thing is well, fairly long.

September 9th, 2021

Earths technological and industrial ability has suffice to say, been flourishing, and Humanities future has been looking up, until now. Solaris-1, a satellite monitoring the sun sent back suffice to say "troubling" data. Scientists thought this to be a mere error, but after having every aspect of what could falsify it, they soncluded that the data was accurate - Sol was heating up due to some anomaly - roughly 1% per year. All major powers agreed to make the news public, and riot control teams are on standby.

September 11th, 2021

WNN (World News Network) has sent out a broadcast today detailing Solaris-1's discovery. This causes large amounts of rioting worldwide - both non-violent and violent. Russia is essentially in a state of civil war, France had their president murdered by a group of rioters before a response could be made, and peaceful protesters are camped outside of the British Parliament and the White House.

October 3rd, 2021

The US and Britan have signed a pact that was enacted immediately.  Due to pressure from both their populations, a new faction was created. The Anglo-American's - the new faction, will dedicate all of its industry and development capabilities to building several Generation ships that would travel to nearby solar systems in the hopes of finding a suitable planet to let humanity to continue on. Rather than being led by a politician, it was decided to be led by a council of scientists and engineers. The generation ships would hold 1/3rd Americans, 1/3rd English, with the last third being for brilliant minds in all areas.

January 27th, 2022

Russia is still fighting amongst themselves, with three main sides - the current government, the Techs and the Revolutionists. The revolutionists wish a return to the old ways - a sort of communism. The Techs wish to secure as much infrastructure as possible in the chaos and build generation ships, wishing to escape much like the Americans and British.

February 2nd, 2022

So far the Anglo-Americans have succeed in orbiting part of a assembly pad in orbit for the generation ships to be built from. Life support systems are being manufactured to buy them more time, it will protect them against the heat, but not so much the radiation. Scientists are working on a nuclear-thermal based propulsion system for the spaceships. While the technology already exists, it has never been used in space, not to mention the size the generation ships will need to be.

January 19th, 2023

The Earth's average temperature has risen by a degree. While human tolerance will allow for around another 4 degree change, after that we will need specially constructed mass cooling systems. This is being made even more difficult due to the mass immigration from other countries, in the hopes of getting on the generation ships, or atleast living a little bit longer than they would outside of the infrastructure. The Russian Government and the Revolutionists seem to have been focusing on destroying each other, and have not really given much attention to the Techs. This has given them the needed time to secure many research facilities and also a large portion of the manufacturing centers. They have started the construction of infrastructure, and are planning to send generation ship components up to orbit by rocket and then assembling them rather than the Anglo-Americans much safer approach. This will let them build the ships faster, however it may be prone to accidents, and will make connecting the sections extremely difficult. Russian scientists have chosen to work on a cryogenic storage system that should make the ships much smaller - no need for extra food, water, or breeding population.

March 8th, 2023

The Anglo-Americans have begun negotiations with one of the Russian factions - the Techs. It is unknown as to what the result will be, but it is known of their program, and sharing any knowledge would be mutually beneficial.

April 3rd, 2023

Negotiations have finished with the Techs. They are to join the Anglo-American faction, and it is to be renamed The Terran Collective. As per the agreement, all technological data, manufacturing potential and manpower will be shared, and the other two Russian factions must cease aggression with the techs.

April 7th, 2023

The two other factions refused to agree to the ceasefire. So, the Americans mobilized troop transports and aircraft carriers to land on the East side of Russia and quell the Revolutionists, while British fighterbombers and ground forces will move in to crush the Government. On a more pleasant sidenote, a Russian propulsion expert, seeing the Americans tech, believed he could speed up development of the engine. He was assigned project leader, and so far it seems he was telling the truth.

September 1st, 2023

Over the past few months, both remaining Russian factions have been utterly crushed. The Russian president was executed during a raid of his bunker, while the revolutionists army was ground into a fine dust. Facing this massive defeat, with American soldiers entrenched around his command building, he committed suicide.

January 14th, 2024

Terran research has finally been completed on nuclear thermal engines. Actual engine design will be held off until the size of the ship can be determined. With the added Russian manufacturing plants, the expansion of the assembly pad has sped up greatly. Bath Ironworks - the yard, can currently build ships of up to 23 000 tons. Design of the ship will start as soon as the yard can build 30 000 ton ships. Development has shifted to the Russian cryo storage units - though it will take a very long time to actually finish.

December 1st, 2024

Temperature on Earth, while it is still within human tolerance, is not within the tolerance of the polar regions. Massive flooding is occurring near the coastal regions of America, and suffice to say, isn't very good for Britan. They are essentially abandoning most of the island, and shipping their most important constructions to Russia. As to why the scientists never remembered this is still unknown.

May 10th, 2025

Research on cryogenic storage has been completed. While this technology already exists, the main difference is that living organisms can be unthawed from it, and while in it will essentially be (no pun intended) frozen in time. Research & Development efforts are now mainly split - 2/3rds for any sort of sensors, and 1/3rd for a special neural enhancement project.

((OOC: Oh boy, neural enhancements again. Remember from the Precursor campaign? Those were fun, weren't they? If you want to know how these normally work, I make real expensive racial techs and research them, then do some ARR PEE that gives me some bonuses Ofc, I try not to do so much as to making meself OP, but sometimes Aurora won't let me do fun, fancy things that entertain you. Also, I keep trying to write 19- for the year, curse you space Russians!))

November 6th, 2025

Finally, Bath Iron Works has been built up to it's target level. Also, an extremely troubling event - human temperature tolerance is about to snap - with a 4 degree global increase, anyone out of a controlled environment will start to suffer. Another nail into the coffin is that current life-support will only be able to provide for 10% of the Collectives population. After we go above the bar, while research personnel and the planned mission crew will be safely inside along with everyone else that can fit, most of our manufacturing centers will be inoperable or running at very low efficiency. (Mostly a side-effect of the heat warping the fine equipment, and oh right, all the workers being killed off.)

February 2nd, 2026

Two technologies have been developed. A automated sensor suite that can detect atmospheric density, planet size and colony cost (0 = fully habitable) and atmospheric composition. The other one is a geological survey suite that can be used to do a probe of mineral concentration for celestial bodies. The last sensor suite is almost finished, and is a thermal sensor, that may be used to judge distance to stars without external help.

March 18th, 1926

Thermal sensors have been developed. We now have all we need to start construction of the first generation ships. Now 2/3rds research capacity will be for the neural enhancement project, and the rest for designing a generation ship.

June 3rd, 2026

Design has finished on the Exodus Generation ship The main design for it is:

Code: [Select]
Exodus class Generation Ship    30,000 tons     972 Crew     1177 BP      TCS 600  TH 312  EM 0
520 km/s     Armour 1-86     Shields 0-0     Sensors 6/5/0/1     Damage Control Rating 66     PPV 0
MSP 1619    Max Repair 100 MSP
Cargo 15000    Passengers 250

Nuclear Thermal Engine E1 (5)    Power 62.5    Fuel Use 10%    Signature 62.5    Armour 0    Exp 1%
Fuel Capacity 200,000 Litres    Range 120.0 billion km   (2670 days at full power)

Thermal Sensor TH1-6 (1)     Sensitivity 6     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  6m km
EM Detection Sensor EM1-5 (1)     Sensitivity 5     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  5m km
Geological Survey Sensors (1)   1 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

BUT MR ANDERSON, YOU CANT GO TO ANOTHER SYSTEM WITH THAT! IT HAS NO WH DRIVES! Yeah, yeah, I know... But lets just imagine for a second, that thats how much it will have left in terms of maintenance supplies and fuel once it reaches its destination and becomes active again. Remember, I need to use lots of ARR PEE in the first bits, since this scenario isnt entirely possible without SM mode to set up.

December 31st, 2026

Construction has started on the first Exodus. It will take almost two and a half years to build. Well, that's with out new manufacturing capacity. Today, we have gone above our temperature tolerance. Only 15% of our population will fit inside the support infrastructure. New cooling units have been added to factories, and while this will protect the workers somewhat, some of them will still die off. Other than those exceptions, most of the unsheilded civilians will die off eventually.

February 7th, 2027

Unrest has begun to increase again. Some people are trying to break into the compounds. The military has been deployed with non-lethal weaponry to prevent entry. If all else fails, the blast doors should be able to hold out, though it is unknown for how long.

March 1st, 2027

R&D has made a breakthrough in cybernetics. The science team has successfully translated the code used by neurons in monkeys. This is huge - mechanical organs, limbs and even brains given the time. Soon, man and machine may be one.

September 3rd, 2027

The first cybernetic enhancement has come out. Mechanical limbs that will match or even exceed regular limbs. This will give the added benefit of extra industrial and mining capacity.

May 6th, 2028

Today marks the launch of the first Exodus Generation ship. It will start loading colonists onto the ship, and will wait in orbit until two more ships are ready. They will then form a fleet and start deadheading to a system. Also, this will open up a little bit of space in the support infrastructure, for the people still alive outside.
