Title: Wiki page not accessible
Post by: Cavgunner on November 02, 2015, 10:13:46 PM
When trying to access the wiki the following error appears:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /index.php on this server.

This error has been going on for more than a day now.

The wiki has been disabled because the host was complaining it was using up the servers resources, Eric thinks there's a script or something causing an error.
Until it gets fixed and if it's put up again you'll need to get help using the forum.
Also there's the new knowledge base which is pretty empty ATM but this gives us an excuse to add to it.

Well, since I disabled the wiki, and email functions here; usage has dropped to normal limits. What I may do is activate the wiki briefly to copy articles from there to the knowledge base here.

I was actually thinking of doing that but was held back by A) The wiki going down and B) not wanting to edit all the articles cause I'm lazy :P.

Well, if you can get us the articles, I would be willing to help edit them for the KB. I'm sure other people would like to help as well. It would also be good for making sure they are all up-to-date. Does the knowledge base have any sort of versioning, so we can separate articles based on which version of Aurora they were written for?

No, but I can create categories to do that.

If people are getting serious about doing things on the KB then maybe its time to set up that special "KB contributor" rank you mentioned earlier Erik.

That's a good idea, I've almost hit vice admiral and won't have any promotions left :(

Hahaha! Let's put it this way. No one has enough posts to hit the highest rank yet, including myself or Steve.

Any word on restoring the wiki or transferring it to the forum KB?

Well if people come up with a list of the most important things they want, I might try writing a few articles.

I've been using single-stage missiles exclusively to strike enemy ships that are within the fire control range of the ship that fired them.

I imagine multi-stage missiles must have some purpose, but I haven't yet figured out when I might want to use them.

I've also gotten the idea that you can create 'buoys' which are missiles that carry a payload of a sensor, rather than a warhead, and they last a long time? Or something?

I have this dim memory of long-ago creating missiles that could track targets under their own power, and therefore operate far outside the targeting range of the ships that fired them. (I may be remembering a different game altogether.)

This is all stuff I'd love to look up on the wiki.

Mines, efficient long range launch stage with speedy short range munition, MIRVS.

Yes. They last as long as they are not shot at by anti-missile fire.

You just need an active sensor (on the missile) and a location. If the missile reaches the destination without seeing a target it will wait there until it does, or detonate if fuel runs out.

I have the wiki accessible now. (For a bit)

I'll attempt to go through and copy the content for the pages, unless I can figure out which table has the content and pull it via SQL. Then I can start creating KB articles based on the wiki pages.

I've also reached out to the mediawiki mail list to see if they have any ideas which would enable keeping the wiki live.

I would argue in favor of the WIKI.  The 'Knowledge Base' seem like more organized tutorial-like  sub-forum, but vastly inferior to what the wiki can offer.

Also on an unrelated note, I HATE the search function in forums and google site search doesn't work here for some reason.

I think that currently most of the beginner topics are covered, however, complete and uptodate advanced guides on pretty much everything are lacking. So take your pick if you are in the mood.
