I just checked the spreadsheet, and found a mistake.   Average number of hits is based on full size gauss cannons for all sizes in multiple sections.   Correcting this shows no significant difference between the sizes for average hits.  Good thinking to check though.

This is true. I've finally gone back and fixed it.

Anyhow, this changes the recommendations somewhat.

Because of slight rounding differences, the best gauss cannons to use are the 5HS and the 1HS versions. They edge out a slightly greater average number of hits than the others; it's on the order of a tenth of a missile or so, depending on ROF.

Of course, this all assumes that the numbers from Aurora are accurate, rather than rounded or treated differently under the hood.

With AMM's you can avoid overkill much easier.  A problem all PD weapons have, especially gauss PD is overkill.  If your quad gauss turret rolls 15 hits but there's only 10 missiles in that salvo, 5 shots go to waste.  Even if there's another salvo in exactly the same location, those 5 shots still hit nothing.  AMM's let you thin out enemy salvos to make the enemy salvo sizes better match your PD fire rate.  If your main PD fire controls can kill 10 missiles, you want to get all incoming salvos as close to a multiple of 10 missiles as possible.  Any less or more means there will be overkill somewhere, either on this salvo or the next.

Because AMM can hit (if you detect them) missiles from a distance in millions km.
And also because if you don't have the initiative, against a ship evading you or trying to maintain a certain range, you'll end up on each impulse with your gauss-equipped ships/fighters too farr away  to fire on the target.

Help! I just spent the last hour fiddling with spreadsheets instead of studying for my comprehensive.

Anyhow, I've created a spreadsheet that compares gauss cannons of all sizes using available hull size and RoF, calculating chance to hit at least once and average number of hits per salvo (assuming no bonuses or maluses based other than those in the design screen, e. g.  ECM or commander accuracy).  Also, these results assume that the percentages displayed in the design screen are correct, rather than approximate.

High level overview

For RoF 1, the results are slightly tricky.  Because of certain break-points in accuracy vs.  size, HS 5 and HS 1 Gauss cannons appear to be the 'best' - that is, give the highest number of hits on average.  (If what you need instead is at least one hit, you're better off going with the largest gun that will fit evenly in your space. )

However, for RoF 2 and above, HS 0. 5 gauss cannons are clearly the best.  (In some small HS allotments, you could argue that the increased chance to hit at least once favors 1 or 1. 5 size gauss cannons - if the enemy's not shooting a lot at you).  They have far and away the highest average number of hits.  (In fact, it gets so high at RoF 4 I'm questioning why I ever built AMMs in the first place. )
