android?
« on: January 07, 2013, 10:46:22 AM »
I'm aware that it is possible to run aurora on Linux, is it therefore possible to run it on Android?  Is there an emulator that would be capable?  Would it be viable on my device (nexus7)?

If you got it to run, your biggest hurdle would be screen resolution. Aurora requires a resolution of 1280x1024.

I don't think it would be as android apps are written in Java, or Mono for lower level stuff

There is this app - http://www.appszoom.com/android_applications/productivity/windows-linux-unix-emulator_cudtf.html

But with no personal android device, I cannot tell you how well it works or doesn't.

Natively, no:  The vast majority of Android devices do not use an x86 CPU, and Wine does not include a CPU emulator.  Additionally, Android does not use the X Window Manager, which Wine requires.

The link Erik posted might make it feasible, but as the majority of comments seem to indicate some trouble with getting it working, I'd highly doubt it is possible at this time.

See the following: http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=8230

It appears that someone has managed to do this, though the steps involved are pretty complicated and still won't work for most devices: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1258506

Whether that would let you run Aurora or not I don't know.  I tend to doubt it.

I've ended up setting a VNC on my desktop and using PocketCloud to remote in and play.

Nope, the Nexus7 is 1280x800

That will not work on a Nexus7, which is an ARM device. The threads above refer to running software through Wine on x86-Android, not ARM. Because Wine still can't emulate the x86 CPU. :)

So unless you use a full-fledged PC emulator ARM-Android (similar to VMware or so) you won't be able to run the x86 binaries for Aurora on the Nexus.

(edit) You could try something like JPC, which is a Java-based x86 PC emulator. It runs unmodified DOS, x86 Linux and IIRC even Windows 95. Here's a link: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.jads.android.jpc I have tried it myself at some point in the past, but it's very slow.

Another option is a DosBox port like DosBox Turbo (not free) https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.fishstix.dosbox I am using that one myself to run old DOS games on my Nexus7 and it works pretty well, I think it's possible with a bit of work to run Windows 95 on top of it, and possible Aurora on top of everything... verrry slooowly probably. :)

I did fiddle around with some emulators, but I'm afraid that if it is possible it is beyond mt capabilities to do so.
