Title: New forum software
Post by: Erik L on September 11, 2010, 04:21:51 PM
Due to phpBB consuming a lot of cpu cycles on the shared server, the host I am with is "suggesting" not using phpBB or moving to a dedicated server. Given certain conditions at the moment it was easier to not move to a dedicated server.

This software was installed from the host itself, so if it does the same, I will take a harder stance with them on it. I have no clue what on the phpBB was using so much cpu time. I am also looking for additional plugins to SMF to replicate some of the functionality that we had on phpBB (jump to most recent unread, etc).

I am also working on getting the wiki back up and running.

I realize this is different software, but the old forum had a "show unread" selection to bring up a list of unread topics.  Makes it easy to quickly find (or ignore) posts you haven't seen yet.  Any chance of getting that back?

If you look near the top, under the news, you should see a bar. This bar includes Home, Help, etc. Towards the end is "Unread".

There's a bar above News that has Home Help Search Profile Calendar Logout.  There's no Unread.

I did change my profile to have a different theme.  I have the Classic YaBB SE theme.

Hmm okay. I'll have to figure out how to add that change to the other themes.

I like the new forum software much better.  I had endless problems with session cookies with the previous forum software.

I'm playing with permissions. If anyone is missing permissions on their fiction forums, let me know.

I've looked over the installed themes. Default (Core) and Babylon have the links at the top. YaBB SE has a link at the bottom in the Stats area showing the last 10 posts.

I am running Babylon and like it, although the text inside the CODE tags look a bit anemic.

I now use the Babylon Theme and it has a Show Unread Posts link.  So I'm happy.

The tutorials in the tutorial section of the forums  are gone.

EDIT: Only 10 and 11 are missing.

Erik
I noticed one of my fiction posts has been truncated. Does that mean I have to replace whats missing?
Regards

The truncated/missing posts are most likely due to a quote or apostrophe. Since the data transfer was automatic, I have no SQL files to find the missing posts. So go ahead and replace the missing bits :)

You may have noticed that the far right column, last post appears to be non-functional in some places, particularly Aurora fiction.

It seems to be functioning properly. Or at least from my observations.

I have noticed that the 'Unread' icon is still associated to posts deep within the Aurora fiction sub forums.

i.e. I read the post then use 'Show unread posts since last visit' and it is correctly not shown. But, I click on Home and scroll down and the forum is marked as Unread.

I've noticed that too. Not sure what's causing it.

Is there anyway to see a list of recent posts without logging in? I can't see one but I am probably just being dim :)

Maybe the Today's Posts at the top?

That only appears when I am logged in. I want to able to see a list of recent posts without logging in, as I could with phpBB. Is there an equivalent?

I'll dig around and see what I can find.

I've added RSS feeds for each forum. Just click the RSS icon next to the forum name.
