Redesigned Battle Fleet
« on: February 17, 2016, 04:52:21 PM »
After some mixed battle results lately, due to the very aged fleet currently in service, I decided to completely redesign my combat platforms.

Bit towards the mid-ish range of tech, I'd like to get some comments on the designs before retooling and starting production.

I won't include any support vessels, those will be designed once these ships enter production

Any flaws anyone can find that I may have overlooked? They are all designed to be combat capable even if they're on their own, albeit at slightly reduced capability, at least I hope so

One thing that I can tell straight away is: don't use thermal reduction if your ships aren't designed for stealth. It'll only make the fleet more expensive.

That aside, these designs look rather solid. I'd swap CIWS for conventional gauss turrets, but it's your choice.

no obvious problems, although a couple quibbles with the carrier:

1.) The magazine doesn't quite square with a full load for your fighters (160x vs 380) - you can get 2 strikes in and then a teensy strike. This isn't a problem really, just not my choice.

2.)  The flight crew berths is very precisely calibrated to 32. This makes it difficult to use a multi-crew fighter design later, or complicating docking a larger vessel in lieu of all or part of the fighter group.

and third: no obvious doctrine for dealing with fighter groups, other than weathering their missile barrages or first striking their carrier. Again, not actually a problem, as this requires specialist designs, gameplay, and situations.

@GreatTuna: I thought of that, but I decided to go for it anyway, "because reasons". It only increases the cost in Gallicite for the engines, which I have stupendous amounts of, for about the next 300 years. Uridium is a bigger problem, which is why I've cut the electronic hardening on sensors and fire control, hoping no enemy will actually turn up with Microwaves. As for the CIWS, that's intended as a fallback for emergency situations, just in case a ship gets caught out away from an escort. Gauss Turrets are bigger and would require a dedicated fire control.

@TheDeadlyShoe: Yeah, the carrier. The magazine is the biggest I can currently make with at least some armor. The ship is already pretty big, as far as my military fleet goes, I didn't wanna go any bigger, mainly because the jump drive was already designed and ready for use. I've had enough components clog up the labs, I didn't wanna toss in even more. But I suppose you aren't wrong.

The missing anti-fighter thing is indeed an oversight. I was playing around with the idea of a Corvette for in-system defense, maybe I'll modify the design for fleet integration to deal with little buggers, because I really don't want to make any of the designs ('cept maybe the carrier) any bigger by integrating anti-fighter capability. What do you think is the best "solution" against fighters? Smaller, longer ranged missiles? Maybe beam-armed fighters? Could either replace some Hawks on the Invincible, or design a dedicated escort carrier for that purpose.

The most important thing for dealing with fighters in flight is of course detecting them. You can't rely on even a max-size small res sensor as long as its with your battlefleet, since fighters can cue off a a support sensor like your fleet uses and strike from beyond practical range.   So you need a low-detectability craft armed with an appropriately-resolution sensor that can operate away from the main fleet without getting active-locked themselves.  Align one or more of these craft with expected incoming vector. Then you can use whatever solution you've devised for defeating enemy fighters; again, a small vessel is ideal, as it can operate away from the battlefleet without itself being targeted by the enemy fighter strike.

I decided to deploy a smaller sized destroyer escort with turreted lasers and small resolution actives to not only provide some more point defense, but also to shoot down any fighters or FACs that sneak too close. The design was originally created to provide defense in the home systems. I just increased fuel and maintenance range and it's good to go.

An escort carrier is now also part of the troop, with beam and sensor fighters to provide CAP.

I'll include the designs once I get home.  ;D
