The Board of Inquiry into the loss of the Geological Survey Vessel Scipione Berislak has reviewed the evidence and believes there is a case to answer over the loss of the Geological Survey Vessel Scipione Berislak. Captain Vessell, Senior Officer Battle Group Téméraire, Lieutenant Commander August Tarangelo, Captain of the Fleet Scout Observer and Lieutenant Commander Klepper, the captain of the Scipione Berislak at the time of the loss will be the subject of a Courts Marshal and be called to give an account of their actions. The Board also noted that overall the performance of the Battle Group on station was satisfactory other than this incident but that the consumption of maintenance supplies was high and in future ship constructors should endeavour to improve this aspect of ship design.

The Courts Marshal of Captain Vessell, Lieutenant Commander Tarangelo and Lieutenant Commander Klepper began today. While much of the courts deliberations will be in private some of the opening evidence was taken in public due to the interest in the case. The audio-visual recording from the emergency catastrophic damage recorder was played to the court. It was evident that the Scipione Berislak had been on a standard approach to survey its next target when the alien cruisers intercepted the vessel. Several of the surviving crewmembers gave accounts of their impressions of the brief engagement. It is alleged that several have been approached regarding a book deal.

24th December 2056. Sol.
The Courts Marshal of Captain Vessell, Lieutenant Commander Tarangelo and Lieutenant Commander Klepper was adjourned this afternoon after all the evidence had been heard and the defendants had been cross examined by the prosecution and defence councils. Captain Vessell was evidently having great difficulty justifying his cursory investigation of 70 Ophiuchi and ignoring requests from Lieutenant Commander Tarangelo for a closer inspection of the planetary system. Lieutenant Commander Klepper was repeatedly questioned as to why she initially thought the sensor contact was a friendly contact and whether this caused a delay in taking avoiding action that cost the ship. The council for both prosecution and defence made their final presentations to the court. The court will reach its decision after the Christmas festivities and the outcome made public early in the New Year.

28th December 2056. Sol.

2057

10th January 2057. Sol.
The Courts Marshal had heard the evidence and legal argument before Christmas and been deliberating since the conclusion of the Winter Solstice festivities; the defendants had been called to present themselves at the Admiralty Building to receive its judgement.

Captain Vessell sat in a wood panelled anteroom within Admiralty Building with his two co-defendants, all in full dress uniform. A Sergeant-at-Arms stood at parade rest in front of the double doors into the inner sanctum where the three judges would be putting the finishing touches to their judgements. The fate of three officers on trial would be decided in the next twenty minutes. Vessell had a knot in the centre of his stomach; he had a very bad premonition about the outcome. The Courts Marshal had reviewed the evidence and his legal representation thought he should be cleared, but he alone of the three had been temporarily removed from command - beached, Lieutenant Commander Tarangelo had retained command of the Fleet Scout Observer while Lieutenant Commander Klepper had first been given command of the EDAV Xinjiang, an escort cruiser, then the missile cruiser Kent, quite a few steps up from a 1000 tonne survey vessel. The Sergeant-at-Arms stiffened as his earpiece whispered to him. He announced “Captain Vessell please enter to receive the judgement of the Court.” He turned and opened the double doors behind him. Captain Vessells strode forward, the Sergeant-at-Arms closing the doors after him.

Captain Vessell entered the committee room, now acting as a courtroom; there were the crests of various ships on the walls including the old Wasp and Yorktown along with the newer Foudroyant and Formidable, both veterans of the action in V1581 Cygni. In front of him sat Vice Admiral Puling, President of the Court, on his left was Commodore Demonte and on his right was Commodore Outman. Between them was a large mahogany table, various readers, books, tomes and papers scattered across it. But in the centre of the table was a gleaming sword, its tip pointed at his heart! They had found him guilty!
Vice Admiral Puling spoke “Captain Vessell, after examination of the facts in this case this court has found you guilty of dereliction of duty and gross negligence that directly lead to the loss of the Geological Survey Vessel Scipione Berislak in that you did not properly investigate the inner system of 70 Ophiuchi for threats or cause such an investigation to take place which was your direct responsibility as Senior Officer of the Escort. The Court takes notice of the fact that you were acting up and had not completed the Flag Officers course and thus mitigated the sentence.  Your punishment is that you are relieved of command, you will lose all seniority on the Navy List at your current rank and forfeit three months pay. Dismissed!” Woodenly Vessell about turned and marched out, his once glittering career in ruins.
Next in was Lieutenant Commander Tarangelo. He too faced the court across the table and once again the sword was pointed tip first at him. The President of the Court spoke once more “Lieutenant Commander Tarangelo the Court finds you guilty of negligence in that you were negligent in not pressing harder for an investigation of the inner system of 70 Ophiuchi in light of your expert knowledge of the limitations of the MR4032-R70 sensor system your ship is fitted with. However the Court takes note that you are a junior officer and that in arguing your point with a senior officer in contradiction of a direct order can be seen as detrimental to the furtherance of your career. But the Court cannot completely ignore such a lapse of judgement that put the Geological Survey Vessel Scipione Berislak at hazard. Your seniority on the Navy List will be reduced by five places and you will forfeit one month’s salary. Dismissed!” Commander Taragelo smartly about turned and left the Court, not too disheartened by its judgement, he could bear loss of seniority and pay since they had left him in command of the Observer!
As Lieutenant Commander Tarangelo exited the Court into the anteroom the Sergeant-at-Arms intoned finally “Lieutenant Commander Klepper please enter the Court to receive its judgement.” Lieutenant Commander Klepper entered through the doors with some trepidation; the body language of her co-defendants as they left indicated the outcome had not been in their favour, Captain Vessell had an air of doom about him, while Lieutenant Commander Tarangelo had shaken his head as he went out.  Her eyes were drawn to the sword lying across the table in front of her. The hilt was towards her! She had been found not guilty of all charges. She came to attention in front of the table her mind in a whirl she barely her the words of Vice Admiral Puling as he said “Lieutenant Commander Klepper this court finds you innocent of hazarding the Geological Survey Vessel Scipione Berislak and all charges relating to that loss.” The Court commends your action in trying to save your ship. Dismissed! The Court is adjourned.” Klepper left the Court in a daze; she still had an untarnished career and command of the missile cruiser Kent.

The Navy Scientific Board published a digest of it findings and deliberations regarding the alien threats Earth now faces. First to be considered were the Invaders. These are regarded as the overriding threat to Earths security. There is sufficient evidence to show that in some fields of scientific endeavour they are far ahead of the EDA, principally that of wormhole manipulation and their unique shield technology. Their principal weapon, the plasma torpedo, is also unique and so far beyond the skill of the EDA scientific community to replicate, although if enough examples can be recovered there is some hope that can be achieved by reverse engineering. In other fields although they are ahead of the EDA, such as in electronic warfare and gauss cannon technology as evidenced by their advanced point defence, they are not out of sight. However the Invaders use the same drive systems and power plants the EDA uses. The Invaders use ceramic composite armour while the EDA has moved onto crystalline composite armour. Furthermore the Invaders have shown no missile technology whatsoever and it is the EDA’s superiority in this field that has kept Earth safe to date. An improvement in electronic warfare would do much to level the playing field. An AI may well control the ships as no organic remains have been found within the wrecks and the Orion class vessels have shown no hesitation it trying to ram EDA ships if the opportunity presented itself.
If any further wormholes are located these should be watched at all times by a force of Battle Group size made up of our latest ships. Any lone ships encountered should be engaged and destroyed were possible, if overmatched then reinforcements should be called for.
The second threat is the 70 Ophiuchi aliens, which are slightly ahead in electronic warfare and particle beam technology, but there is no evidence that they are ahead in any other technology. They have missile technology as evidenced by the recovered missile launchers, but none was used against our forces. The 70 Ophiuchi aliens have inferior drive systems, power systems, sensors and armour. Their CIWS is the equal of our latest but did not perform well when their ships were attacked. The vessels all appeared to be automated as once more no remains of organic life forms were found within the wrecks. There is some evidence the 70 Ophiuchi aliens are relics of the Precursors mentioned in data recovered from the Chapineria Imperium ruins on Titan, although there was no mention of automated warships in these reports .In conclusion the Precursor’s are not a real threat, but could cause the loss of any unwary vessel. Any vessel encountered should be treated as hostile and destroyed.
The final recommendation of the Board was that all jump points within one jump of Sol system should be explored, and that this should be extended to two jumps in due course.

The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Gliese 526-A asteroid #292 has been increased to 15 civilian mining complexes.

19th February 2058. Gliese 414.
Battle Group Téméraire found itself in the vicinity of Gliese 414, 38.9 light-years from Earth, a binary star system. The primary component was an orange K8-V with a family of four planets, a couple of dozen moons and a score of asteroids, 4.25 billion kilometres distant from the jump point. The secondary component was a red dwarf M2-V nearly three trillion kilometres away. Gliese 414-A II had a habitability index of 1.8, but circling the B component were two lonely planets with habitability indices of 1.8 and 3.3 respectively. But until hyper technology engines were vastly upgraded and introduced into service they were likely to stay lonely. Battle Group Téméraire made a closer inspection of Gliese 414-A II, noting it had a surface temperature of 8.8oC, but no hydrosphere. There were no traces of alien presence in the system on the sensors as the Battle Group made a slingshot manoeuvre around the planet.

25th February 2058. Sol.
The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Callisto has been increased to 118 civilian mining complexes.

17th March 2058. Gliese 436-A.
Battle Group Téméraire emerged into the light of a dim red dwarf  (M2-V) orbited by six planets and a couple of dozen planets. The XNAV system identified it as Gliese 436-A. One of the planets stood out like a jewel. Perfect for humans in all ways except one, the oxygen content was only 0.03 atmospheres, easily rectified by modern technology! Commodore Gorbatov announced to the Battle Group they had found New Earth! Now to see if it was unclaimed, there was nothing on the scanners, but Commodore Gorbatov was not going to commit a sin of omission, the Battle Group made a slow pass around Gliese 436-A II. The name stuck, the planet was hereafter known as New Earth.

14th April 2058. Gliese 414.
Gravitational Survey Squadron 1 reported the virtually simultaneous discovery of three new jump points in Gliese 414.

18:42 Lieutenant Commander Zhu, captain of the Geological Survey Vessel Louis Agassiz checked the repeater screens at his station, his astrogator announced “coming up on asteroid #7 now sir!” “Sensors clear” swiftly followed this from the scan station. Zhu frowned, did his sensor repeater display flicker? Suddenly his sensor officer shouted out “thermal ground contact! Enemy ground forces present, missile launch! Two birds in orbit, size 24!” Zhu sat bolt upright in his recliner, “Pilot, reverse course maximum burn, Coms flash the John Cabot, enemy weapons base located, missiles inbound! Sensors, data dump to the Cabot.” A series of “Aye sir” echoed round the compartment, the klaxon began its ululating wail alerting the crew to don pressure suits, ship undergoing erratic manoeuvres and collision alert. Zhu’s restraints forced him back into his form-fitting couch; around the bridge other couches were doing the same to their occupants. The pilot depressed a series of switches to turn to ship end over end. As the vessel thrust away from the asteroid the sensor officer noted a missile or buoy with an active MR77-R86 sensor releasing four submunitions, he appended the knowledge to his data dump. At 31,000 kilometres the thermal contact winked out. But before it did so the sensor operator got a hard ID on the signal, it was the 70 Ophiuchi aliens! Four small Heerden anti-ship missiles raced after the fleeing ship, turning space around it bright as the sun for an instant, the bridge ejection system worked flawlessly stuffing the bridge crew into life pods before the sensor bay ruptured and the engineering spaces were torn open to naked vacuum. The drive containment field failed, venting raw plasma into the ship, incinerating any crew in vac suits, mercifully ending the brief suffering of those without. Ten seconds after the first contact Lieutenant Commander Zhu found himself floating in a fragile shell with 16 comrades, their only company the plaintive bleating of the emergency catastrophic damage recorder.

At the jump point to Beta Canum a stunned silence echoed round the bridge of the jump cruiser John Cabot. It couldn’t be happening again as it did in 70 Ophiuchi! Battle Group Téméraire had visited Gliese-A II, and found nothing! Captain Lengyel made a rapid decision, he couldn’t risk taking the Cabot insystem, but he could release his escort to attempt a rescue of any survivors while taking the Cabot back to Beta Canum to raise the alarm.
The escort cruisers Atlas and K2 bore insystem as the rest of the geological survey vessels fled towards the jump point like startled grouse. In the outer system the gravitational survey vessels carried serenely on about their business.

The Mao Wei Song industrial analysis and construction research group completed development work on a Star Gate construction module capable of erecting a Star Gate in 90 days, the same time as the alien modules. The team think this can be improved on in due course.

Earth orbit was full of frantic activity, the carrier Formidable was in the process of re-equipping with the new A5 Thunderbolt strike fighter to replace its shattered fighter group. Battle Group Téméraire was about to leave Earth orbit enroute for Gliese 414. Elsewhere the Troop Transports Guam and Messina were loading the 4th Ghurkha Brigade and the 5th Armoured Cavalry Brigade. Later that day the Troop Transports Guam and Messina set off in company with the Assault Transports Charles Upham and Frank Baldwin.

Gliese 414-A.
The senior officer of the escort cruisers Atlas and K2, Lieutenant Commander Malcom Curiel (captain of the K2), halted the two escort cruisers 27 million kilometres short of the fateful asteroid #7. There was nothing to be seen on sensors. He resolved to close to the range of his anti-missile sensors, 3.24 million kilometres and continue in until he found something. At 2.6 million kilometres the cruisers detected two size 24 contacts in orbit of asteroid #7. Lieutenant Commander Curiel passed the order to engage the contacts. Five seconds later five AMM-4 Spartan missiles sped from the missile launchers of the K2. 44 seconds later the two satellites of asteroid #7 disappeared in a rash of nuclear detonations. When the sensors cleared space was clear, only the baleful glare on the screen denoting ground units burned on the display.  The Atlas took lieutenant Commander Zhu and the other survivors of the ill-fated Louis Agassiz aboard before the two cruisers returned to their parent task group. Lieutenant Commander Curiel was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for this action.

22nd May 2058. 70 Ophiuchi.
The Lauren Oun xenology team reported that the ruins in 70 Ophiuchi belonged to the Commonwealth of Bun Cranncha. Their language and symbology have been translated. While most of the outpost was destroyed there are six installations that it may be possible to reactivate. The team is also quite sure that the ruins are distinct from the Precursor ships found guarding them. They use a completely different symbology and the outpost was of a much lower tech level compared to the ships.  While it cannot be ruled out that the Precursors destroyed the outpost none of the vessels found there possessed the armament capable of such destruction. As an aside the base for the xenologists and the planetary garrison was only reachable by passing over an ice bridge, which was quite stable in the –58oC temperature. The xenologists and troops began to refer to the base as Asgard. The name stuck, so much so that the planet was soon being referred to as Asgard.

11th June 2058. Sol.
The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Iapetus has been increased to 107 civilian mining complexes.

70 Ophiuchi-A.
The 31st Engineering Brigade managed to reactivate an abandoned automated mine on Asgard - 70 Ophiuchi-A IV.
The 30th Engineering Brigade managed to reactivate an abandoned construction factory on Asgard - 70 Ophiuchi-A IV.

Gliese 414-A Asteroid #7.
Combat continued against the alien droids. Unlike the combat on Titan against the Intruder droids these shot back, accurately! Progress was slow; these were combat droids in prepared ground, not maintenance droids in a makeshift defence. No sooner was a droid knocked out than it was dragged away rapidly repaired and back in the line within hours at most. The Ghurkhas infantry weapons were just not capable of dealing enough damage to make the droid un-salvageable.

Gaje Lama crouched behind a rocky outcrop his gauss rifle resting on a convenient projection. The only sounds were from his suit as it took care of him in the airless waste. The night of space outlined two low grey stony mounds. He sighted his gauss rifle at the sensor cluster of the droid as it moved into the gap between the two mounds, 300 metres distant. Lama triggered a long burst, the armour piercing projectiles shattered the droid sensor cluster, but were shed like rain from the tough outer integument of the mechanical defender. The droid laid down a random suppression fire pattern as Lama rapidly relocated to his rear and right along a predetermined path using his hands to propel himself along in the low gravity, keeping low. Several of the Battalion had found it was too easy to leave the surface of the asteroid and many of them had been injured before they could use their jets to regain the surface. He had not travelled 25 metres before a guided munition demolished his initial ambush point; several of the rocky fragments dislodged in the blast were destined to become moonlets as they achieved orbital velocity.

18th June 2058. 70 Ophiuchi-A.
The 30th Engineering Brigade managed to reactivate an abandoned mine on Asgard - 70 Ophiuchi-A IV.

19th June 2058. Gliese 414-A.
It was nearly a fortnight since the Ghurkhas dropped on to the asteroid. In the broken ground of the asteroid the infantry were just too lightly armed and the droids too well armoured to eliminate, the position was a stalemate. The decision was taken to drop the 5th Armoured Cavalry Brigade into the combat zone.

26th June 2058. Gliese 414-A.
The heavy weapons of the armoured battalions made a difference; when a droid was hit by an AFV main gun it stayed hit! The enemy finally lost 10% of their number - permanently.

Gaje Lama looked out from his vantage point half way up a rock pinnacle jutting above the surface of the asteroid. He had a panoramic view of the current battle ground. The light armour of the 5th Cavalry were moving slowly below him. Lama hefted his target designator as a target revealed itself. Lama directed the designator at a droid whose chameleon circuit had briefly failed to adjust to the terrain rapidly enough. One of the light vehicles launched a missile which performed a pop-up manoeuvre, the main drive ignited and it homed onto the droid illuminated by the target designator. Seconds later there was satisfying gout of dust and debris, parts of the droid heading off into the dark as they sped away from the asteroid. There would be no repairing that droid.

4th July 2058. Gliese 414-A.
Progress against the stubborn resistance of the droids continued, at a slightly lower attrition rate, only 6% of the droids being knocked out, but at least it was progress.

70 Ophiuchi-A.
The 24th Engineering Brigade failed to recover the abandoned installation assigned to it on Asgard - 70 Ophiuchi-A IV.

9th July 2058. Gliese 414-A.
The advance on the alien base continued, against fierce resistance, but at least the droids were giving ground, 23% of the remaining droids were destroyed by the armoured battalion and MI using anti-armour weapons, which were now in plentiful supply.

Sol.
The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Iapetus has been increased to 108 civilian mining complexes.

19th July 2058. Gliese 414-A.
The battle still raged around the Precursor installation, the AI controlling the droids appeared to be making a last ditch effort to eradicate the EDA forces, but to no avail. In the process it suffered its highest losses so far with 33% of its effectives becoming casualties.

70 Ophiuchi-A.
The 30th Engineering Brigade managed to recover 220 abandoned habitation (infrastructure) units on Asgard - 70 Ophiuchi-A IV. This was the last installation that it was possible to recover on the planet.

24th July 2058. Sol.
Professor Yu Jian Qing’s sensor research group completed the development of an ECM-4 module for the Navy, bringing them up to parity with the Precursors.

Gliese 414-A Asteroid #7.
The droids were forced back inside the outpost, now it was corridor-by-corridor, room-by-room. The Ghurkha MI were inside mopping up the still dangerous enemy destroying the last few operational droids.

25th July  2058. Gliese 414-A.
The last droid was incapacitated; the AI self-destructed when the last of its defenders perished. The base was now in the hands of the Ghurkhas. The battle had been remarkable as no one had actually been killed on the EDA side and there were only automatons on the other.

5th August 2058. Gliese 414-A.
With the defenders gone the mobile infantry were able to explore the Precursor installation. They discovered a tracking station and a stockpile of 8,504 Simbwaye anti-missile missiles. The real surprise was that when the remains of the droids were counted they probably amounted to no more than a battalion and had held off eight times their number for over seven weeks!

Gliese 526-A.
The EDA Resource Commission reported that the civilian mining operation on Gliese 526-A asteroid #292 has been increased to 18 civilian mining complexes.

20th August  2058. Gliese 414-A.
Geological Survey Squadron 1 found no TN minerals in Gliese 414-A, the system had been completely mined out sometime in the past few thousand years!

The Board of Inquiry into the loss of the Geological Survey Vessel Louis Agassiz released its findings. They concluded that Commodore Gorbatov could not have detected the presence of the alien base unless he had investigated the asteroid at very close range, given that it only had a thermal signature of 5. They noted that Battle Group Téméraire had in fact passed within 161.7 million kilometres of the base but that was still too distant to locate the base or orbiting defences. The Board recommended that if these bases were widespread then a re-design of the Geological Survey Vessels was warranted, in that they seemed particularly at risk while the Gravitational Survey Vessels were by and large ignored.

The exploits of the K2 and Atlas highlighted that these vessels have not been modernised since 2042 and the meson cannon on these ships and even the Mk II escort cruiser require serious updating. The Admiralty Bureau of Construction drew up plans for the immediate modernisation of the Mk I Mod 1 and Mk II escort cruisers. It was possible to modify the contract with the JaingYang Naval Orbital Shipyard, which was still tooled to produce the Mountain Mk II escort cruiser. However the programme for the limited modernisation of the Mk I Mod 1 would require it to go out to tender as the JaingYang Naval Orbital Shipyard no longer had the pattern for the construction of this class and would be fully occupied with modernisation of the Mk II.

Battle Group Téméraire has been detailed to investigate the two unexplored warp points in HO Librae. Battle Group Illustrious should have undertaken this task but the Battle Groups escort cruisers are in the midst of a refit. Commodore Gorbatov remains in command of the Battle Group.

29th May 2059. Gliese 555.
Battle Group Téméraire emerged from the jump point in HO Librae into the light of a dim M4-V star, all alone in the night, planetless. It almost came as a shock after the plethora of planets found in the other systems already explored. The star was identified as Gliese 555, which is located approximately 20 light-years from Sol.

6th June 2059 2059. HO Librae.
The 6th June saw Battle Group Téméraire poised at the remaining unexplored jump point out of HO Librae. The ships formed up, the CJ Gilgamesh activated its jump engine, space rippled, the formation moved forward, less than seconds later the Battle Group emerged into the light of a new star, it was another of the ubiquitous M4-V red dwarf stars, but this one in contrast to Gliese 555 had a gaggle of planets orbiting it, keeping it company in the long dark along with a scattering of comets. Two of the planets were gas giants each with their own clutch of moons. The XNAV system went to work along with the spectroscopic studies. It was only the work of moments for the onboard computers to come up with the stars identification. It was Ross 154 a red dwarf, yes but also a UV Ceti-type flare star, 9.68 light-years from Sol, the closest yet in astronomical terms.  As the scans stabilised alarms sounded throughout the fleet, there were alien contacts in system, the nearest some two billion kilometres away. The scans continued to stabilise, resolution improved and it became obvious that the alien vessels were long dead, wrecks of some past engagement, cold and dead. There were no other contacts on screen.
The Battle Group stayed on the jump point while the astronomers acquired knowledge of the orbiting planets. There was pay dirt among the dross, of the five planets Ross 154-A II glinted in the weak sunlight it was unprepossessing, a chilly -42.5 oC, with a thin shroud of an atmosphere. But it had a habitability index of 1.8, easily terraformed! Commodore Gorbatov gave the orders that sent the Battle Group inward towards the light to check out the latest addition to the EDA’s real estate portfolio.

11th June 2059. Ross 154-A.
07:17 Battle Group Téméraire closed Ross 154-A II, there were two wrecks in orbit, both of 7700 tonnes. It was a routine approach until the alarms sounded once more, this time for real, aboard the escort cruisers Mount Fuji, Mount Rainier, Mount Rushmore, Etna, and Carpathian missile launchers chugged as they launched counter missiles against the incoming missile salvo that had suddenly lit up the threat display. Generators struggled to spin up the ships shields, fortunately the AMM-4 Spartans found their twelve targets with ease, speckling the star field with short-lived actinic points of light as the missiles destroyed the incoming salvo. No more missiles followed the first attack as the Battle Group retired 500,000 kilometres from the planet. There was nothing on the sensors but the wrecks. Weapons officers were frantically hunting for targets, but none showed themselves. The eventual conclusion was that the Battle Group had activated some long dormant orbital mines circling Ross 154-A II, perhaps the same as those found in orbit of Gliese 414-A asteroid #7. But there was no evidence of a ground base, no faint thermal contact.
Commodore Gorbatov decided to check out the other wrecks in the system in case they should also harbour an unwelcome surprise. After which the other planets in the system would come under scrutiny.

14th June 2059. Ross 154-A.
Battle Group Téméraire had finished its exploration of Ross 154-A. No further threats were located. Commodore Gorbatov signalled Geological Survey Squadron 2 to proceed.

22nd December 2059. Ross 154-A.
The Lauren Oun Xenology team completed their work translating the symbology and written language of the destroyed colony discovered on Ross 154-A II. The colony was part of a polity which called itself, as best we can translate, the Broken Wheel Imperium. The Imperium was not as technologically advanced as the EDA, with estimates putting their tech level at TL3. Some of the wrecked vessels in the system may have been theirs. Surprisingly records examined so far seem to speak of the 70 Ophuichi aliens as allies. The wrecks salved across the system appear to belong to at least three races; it is obvious that among the losers of the battle was the Broken Wheel Imperium.  The xenologists think, based on their experience of the Titan dig that as many as 72 structures may be recoverable from the wreckage of the colony.

Sol.
Darr Trading added a further Port class freighter to its fleet, thus passing one million tonnes of shipping under its flag. Although this makes it four times the size of most of its competitors it is still dwarfed by the over 3.25 million tonnes of shipping flagged under the Maggart Corporation banner. The Darr Trading fleet is currently composed of thirteen Nieuw Amsterdam colony transports and sixteen Port class freighters of various Marques.

27th December 2059. Gliese 526-A.

The atmosphere of 414-A II is now breathable without artificial aids. So ardent has Governor Bryan’s lobbying for provision of terraforming installations and other equipment that the planet has become known as Bryan’s World. He is now campaigning for the provision of a scheduled colony transport time table to bring in all the colonists he is sure will want to live on his unspoilt paradise of a planet, which having no TN mineral deposits located so far is likely to stay that way. However the new Queen class colony transports have not yet been laid down and will not be completed until 2064 so he will have to wait for his scheduled coloniser visits. In the meantime the commercial transport companies are bringing colonists in but in relatively small numbers.

18th December 2061. Gliese 745.
Battle Group Illustrious probed the final unexplored jump point in Altair. The fleet emerged into another binary system of two dim M2-V stars; it did not take long to identify the system as that of Gliese 745, which is some 28.9 light-years from Earth. The A component had eight planets dozens of moons and hundreds of asteroids orbiting it, while the B component had an even larger planetary system consisting of nine planets and even more moons and asteroids. For the first time both components had a super Jovian gas giant in their planetary systems. This would provide the first opportunity to prove an obscure part of Professor Segovia’s theories on gravitational anomalies which appeared to show that if two super Jovians are that close together then their Lagrange points can be used as intra-system wormholes and be used to transit between the different Lagrange points within the star system, providing access to distant stellar companions.

Commercial Shipping Digest 2062
Trading conditions have not improved even though there were some large Government contracts up for grabs as terraforming facilities and construction factories were moved to new colonies. The Maggart Corporation managed to maintain steady if unspectacular progress commissioning a Port class freighter and a Nieuw Amsterdam class colony transport. The trading conditions hit Darr Trading that only managed to launch a single Port class freighter. The colonist transport market appeared to be holding up the better than the freight sector with Ryzkhov Shipping Company, Balducci Colony Group and Norton all adding a Nieuw Amsterdam colony transport to their fleets.
