Those Who Must Endure Chapter 8 - We Are Eishi

KR:

The military reform was finally complete in 2042. After suffering losses to the BETA, the Tokyo aliens, the Soviets, it was clear that we could not maintain our current Divisions. Though, this was the reason the reforms were put forward, the Shogun had instead decided to reform our military hierarchy, so that even less experienced officers, could be assigned to heavy ships. After all, the ships weren't the problem, the personnel was. In the end, this also meant that we accepted the Russian refugees, after the capitulation of their country, into our military-- a bold move.

Reports say the radiation level on Earth is going down-- slowly. Another 30 years, and the Earth should be considered recovered. But whether we can survive that... that is another question. Our united plan to introduce greenhouse gasses to the atmosphere has brought the atmosphere to a chilly -3 degrees celsius-- it takes some adjustment, but it's not bad. However, 600 million people have died already, and barely a year has passed. The BETA has already killed 5 billion people. It is not hard to do the math. We are facing an extinction level event.

But we have not been idle. Even after our narrow escape from the Tokyo system, the Takemikazuchi 'Ten' was reassigned to the Imperial Army. The Imperial Army's 88th Battalion is now considered the most well trained and well armed task group we have at our disposal. Having met the Soviet's and exchanged fire with them the first, and been in dry dock for such a long time has allowed them to train non-stop, while the Royal Guard and Navy explored the stars and battled the alien threats. It is also, unfortunately, the only Battalion that still has a support vessel, and is able to perform long range missions. Due to this, it was assigned most of the newly built Shiranui Thirds, and the Shiranui Improveds. Still missing a Destroyer, even so, it is still the most powerful Battalion at our disposal.

We were ready to engage the aliens at Tokyo, supporting the 88th-- but then we were treated to a surprise. Consider this: The Americans, when the BETA invaded earth, have never fought the BETA on their own soil. Truly: since none of the BETA Hives landed on the American continent, they were fairly safe-- all they had to do was give their support and help to the countries maintaining the defense lines, and so long as those defense lines stood, and they would never have to fight the BETA by themselves. So what did they do? Develop weapons for a fight against Humanity itself when the BETA was (hopefully) eradicated. That's right. Their Raptors have radar stealth technology-- why, you would wonder, when the BETA have no radar capability.

How convenient then, that it was the Americans, using their stealth technology, entered the Tokyo system, and brought those weapons to bear against the Aliens. The battle was short-- a couple of days, and now a quarter million tons of wreckage floats in the space of the Tokyo system. And not only that, but immediately afterwards, they signed a formal tariff-free trade treaty that included their extraterrestrial colony goods-- the one on Mars.

I remember the day when the Shogun had said that we shall light the way to the future-- the future where we are united and strong. I wonder if that day has come. I wonder if she had managed to do it.

She must have-- because even she as an Eishi-- like me. Like many of our fallen companions. Like many of our companions who have yet to fall. And fall we shall. Because we are the edge of Humanity's blade. We are Eishi.

(Nothing interesting happening so far unfortunately, with USA stealing all my glory.)
