Can't jump and don't get why
« on: December 02, 2017, 03:38:55 PM »
My new GravSurvey ship can't jump with the help of my Jump Tender (Military grade, 4000 tons capacity). Can someone explain me the issue?

Gateway class Jump Tender    1500 tons     51 Crew     158 BP      TCS 30  TH 48  EM 0
1600 km/s    JR 3-50     Armour 1-11     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control 2     PPV 0
Annual Failure Rate: 0%    IFR: 0%    Maintenance Capacity 132 MSP
Spare Berths 1

Lawson Marine J4000(3-50) Military Jump Drive     Max Ship Size 4000 tons    Distance 50k km     Squadron Size 3
Lawson Marine 12 EP Prototype N-Pulse Thruster (4)    Power 12    Fuel Use 245.53%    Armour 0    Exp 15%
Fuel Capacity 100 000 Litres    Range 4.9 billion km   (35 days at full power)

This design is classed as a military vessel for maintenance purposes

Huygens - B class Long Range Gravsurvey Vessel    2000 tons     60 Crew     477.4 BP      TCS 40  TH 90  EM 0
2250 km/s     Armour 1-14     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/3/0     Damage Control 3     PPV 0
Annual Failure Rate: 0%    IFR: 0%    Maintenance Capacity 448 MSP
Spare Berths 0

Lawson Marine 9 EP Ion Ramscoop (10)    Power 9    Fuel Use 33.76%    Armour 0    Exp 7%
Fuel Capacity 260 000 Litres    Range 69.3 billion km   (356 days at full power)

Gravitational Survey Sensors (3)   3 Survey Points
This design is classed as a military vessel for maintenance purposes

The accompanying mini-tanker has no issue. Previous 1000-tons Huygens had no issues either, with the very same Gateway JT.

*Meuse River class Replenishment Ship    500 tons     5 Crew     75.6 BP      TCS 10  TH 18  EM 0
2400 km/s     Armour 1-5     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/1/0/0     Damage Control 1     PPV 0

The actual maximum ship size that can be jumped is the tonnage of the jump ship.  The jump drive has to exceed the jump ship's tonnage to function, but otherwise has no impact on max tonnage.  In this case you're trying to jump a 2000ton ship with a 1500ton max.

So for example, if you put that same jump drive in a 3000 ton vessel, it would have a 3000ton jump max. If you put it in a 4000 ton vessel, it'd have a 4000ton jump max. If you put it in a 4050 ton vessel, the ship would be unable to jump itself.

Jump Drive max transfer sizing is one of those slightly weird part of Aurora. I don't know why the Jump Ship's sizing has an effect, but it does and produces this trap for newer players.

Thinking about it, jump-tankers or similar support ships are a decent option for making use of that hull space you need to get the Jump Drives working properly.

Not too fond of the rule, after some more thoughts. It means the 'service ship' must be as big as any of the ship it wants to 'service', so this seems too restrictive. At the very least, it could be an additional parameter in jump technology, the % ratio between the 2 ships. More sub-parameters in a component is always a nice  touch.

it's the difference between jump tech making better jump ships or just smaller jump ships.  it has a lot of balance and ship design implications especially as jump drive tech advances.  For example you could start jumping warships with fighters that are just the drive, 0.1 crew requirement and nothing else.
