Title: Aurora for mac?
Post by: Shininglight on August 09, 2012, 02:56:10 PM
Hello to all who read this, I recently aquired a veery nice macintosh, downloaded virtual box and added linux as well, laptop, far better then my old one and with a decent sized screen so i can actually see the taskbars ingame. I tried installing ( i'm not the.... most ... savvy computer person ) with the version i had on my USB but it didn't work, Therefore i'm guessing aurora is exclusively windows. I was wondering if there are any versions of the game for mac or linux that i haven't seen? Help would be appreciated.

I'm having mixed result with wine bottler, but configuring it all up is a bit messy. how confident are you with the command line?

Not at all, the ony work i've had with programs and code was a progamming class in highschool that i barely managed to pass.

ok, plan B: was your previous laptop windows? if that's the case, under its belly you should have a valid windows licence.

you can then run aurora under windows under virtualbox. you don't even need a recent windows, if your old lappie was windows xp based it's even better.

yes it is possible to run it under wine, but it takes a bit of tweaking. There are a few threads about it in the bugs forum, and a complete tweaked wine prefix that you can just download and run. Sadly I was using megaupload to distribute it, and with the war on cyberlockers on I don't know how to distribute any prebuilt wine prefix easily over the net.

When I have a day or two of free time again I'll rebuild the thing for the new wine and aurora versions, but that looks to be a few months off at the very least.

If it is under 2meg, you can put it here. Click Downloads at the top. Otherwise send me a PM and we'll work something out.

The last one I built was around 100 MB. I'll drop you a PM when I ever get to spend a day or two rebuilding it and bug hunting to make it better, but with my current work schedule that is looking like a december timeframe.

Still wondering if the help will be forthcoming, i've been running aurora on wine with the MSST downloaded but get the type 13 error and have no idea how to fix it. I found the thread dealing with it but don't know how to do half the crap that is mentioned -_-'

I too would greatly appreciate a download or step-by-step guide (or even a relatively comprehensive overview) to facilitate an error-free Aurora experience on Mac OS X.

So far, I've encountered (and partially troubleshooted) errors during installation about missing OCX files, errors about missing DLL files when opening the F9 System window, Type 13 errors that occur frequently due to missing dcom98 files, and (most cripplingly) hundreds or thousands of type 424 CreateGameLog files that occur occasionally and require a game restart.  If anyone would find it helpful, I should be able to write more about my experiences with these things and link to a few explanatory threads from old versions of the game.

I've been running Aurora under mac using Wine.  I installed wine from MacPorts, along with winetricks.  Then followed the directions on the wine website in their appDB section somebody posted for Aurora.  Only problem I've had is a series of errors to click through about once a game year when it tries to write a log file.  I will see about writing up really step by step directions for the whole process, but it probably won't happen real soon.

@zatomic

Could you post a link to the instructions on the wine website? I recently downloaded Macports but i'm still figuring it out.

Here's the link, probably mangled due to my low post count.

Just hit a small problem, my mac runs snow leopard and for some reason theres no xcode already installed. Sadly this means macports isn't working when i try to install wine and winetricks.

And theres no xcode downloads less than version 4 that i can find. Ans since version 4 is incompatible with snow leopard i seem to be screwed

I got a request for information about how I got Aurora running in Mac OS X, so here's what I remember.  I'll try to hit the major points but this won't be a step-by-step explicit "recipe," at least at first - if there are specific questions, I'll try to answer them, and I may come back to provide more detail later.

First of all, I use CrossOver (a commercial front-end for Wine) rather than Wine itself, so the process will look slightly different with Wine.  The broad strokes will probably be the same, but I use CrossOver because in my experience it involves less configuration (and because I got it during giveaway last year. )

You're going to want to start by installing Aurora in a new bottle.  This will follow the usual process - install the latest version that has an installer, apply the patches in order, respond "keep" to any dialogs about duplicating files.  You may hit an error near the end about a missing OCX file; just hit "continue," as the game will run without it and I don't know how to fix it.

When you try to open the system overview window (F9), you may get an error about missing the file MSSTDFMT. DLL.  You should be able to find this file, and how to install it in Wine, via Google.  Restart your bottle and try the F9 window again, and it should work.  (Incidentally, this is not unique to Wine; I had the same experience in Windows 7. )

If you try to advance time and get a slew of Type 13 errors, you need to install dcom98 files so that Wine can run VB applications such as Aurora.  In CrossOver, this is called "Windows OLE components" under Runtime Support Components.  For Wine, I recommend googling around for installation instructions.

Finally, you're likely to encounter a nearly never-ending sequence of Type 424 errors (or an outright program crash) approximately once per game year.  This appears to be related to GameLog functions, but I don't know anything more about what causes it or how to fix it.  Luckily, the program can be force-quit (or the bottle rebooted) and the game can be re-opened and continued without issue.  I recommend frequent backups.

Thanks a bunch Hurmdum but i seem to be having an issue, i installed the dcom98 on the aurora prefix in wine but i'm still getting type 13 errors. i've got msstdfmt registered and working, but i'm constantly getting tyype13 errors which instantly close the application after they pop up. but it's only when i go into system information that it does this.

You can get old versions of Xcode here (https://developer.apple.com/downloads/index.action). You'll need to be registered as an Apple Developer, which I remember being somewhat time consuming and involved, but definitely doable.

I know, sadly i can never remember my apple id and they haven't gotten around to sending me a password change email. After at least three requests. So the mac developer site seems to be off limits for me.

If Xcode is the only problem then there should be a copy on your Snow Leopard installation disk under 'optional installs.'

Only thing I know about mac is it goes well with cheese.

Just bought my wife a Macbook with the new retina screen for her birthday. Very nice indeed. I think I have used it more than her :)

I must admit I am tempted to get a desktop Mac but everything I have is windows-based so it would be a massive change,.

I don't have the original disk, the mac i'm using is a gift from a relative of mine who does coding work up in San Francisco. Also thank you for gracing this thread mighty Steve and Erik.

You should be able to download xcode (https://developer.apple.com/xcode/).

Karlito those Xcodes are to high of a version, anything above Xcode 3 i believe doesn't work. At least i think.

Quite right. You can still download the older versions of xcode from somewhere. I've had to do it myself.

Yes but you need an apple developer's account or somesuch, I registered but never got the confirmation email.

I've never used Wine before, so I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but SETUP. exe keeps saying it could not create the directory.

A permissions issue, or maybe a bad path. Try installing it to your home directory: probably something like Z:\Users\THmanslyr\Aurora

I found it was easier to install Wine via Winebottler (winebottler.kronenberg.org) and then use its inbuilt interface to winetricks to implement the suggestions from http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=27303 .  It took some fiddling to get everything working, but it wasn't too bad.  By that I mean a bunch command line work was required, but I learnt most of the required stuff via frantic googling rather than innate Unix guru powers.

@Narmio

Could you tell me just where the command line work was needed? I've used winebottler before and had some success, but the system still crashed almost at random so *shrug*

Well i finally got macports set up as well as XCode, sadly it seems that the current build of winetricks isn't functional, every time i try to install it i have an issue with Orbit2 building and the macports website itself hasn't been very helpful.

Aurora works perfectly with Parallels.  Also smooth switching back to Mac OS to do whatever while NPCs are fighting it out.
