Hi, i'm a regular lurker on this forum and love reading the stories here, they have helped me learn the game and have immense amount of fun playing it.  I thought I would contribute back with my own  story.  Starting off as a sort of guide to how I tackle a “default” conventional start and expand in to a story.  I have very much enjoyed playing this campaign so far as it has helped my to RP more and make everything more interesting.  Please feel free to provide feedback good or bad and suggestions for future events :)

This is the Story of the United Australian Republic.  Formed after the nuclear war that engulfed the US, Russia and China.  Fortunately due to Australians unique isolated location they were “almost” untouched by the war, apart from the nuclear fallout.  And quickly became the centre of wealth and power in the world.  The year begins in 2000  --- keeps things easy to keep track of
where the population is ready to reach for the stars.

Today is a tremendous day as the first two Ships of the new  United Australian Republic has being completed.  Both ships are launched simultaneously from the dock and is broadcast around the world.  The people are amazed at the speed in which these massive vessels move away from dock. 
Canberra 1 is given to Capitan Emma Hay (surv 45%)
Canberra 2 is given to Commander Louis Wood.  (surv 30%)
To celebrate and to raise moral of the people a shakedown race is organised.  Both ships shall race to the moon to drive home the tremendous achievement and advancement in technology the  United Australian Republic has achieved.
The Race was so tight not even 5 second gap separated the opponents.  The entire race was over in just under 4 minutes! Sensors show from earth that Canberra 1, operated by Capitan Emma Hay, narrowly won due to her superior Fleet initiate.  As a reward she began the first ever extraterrestrial survey on the moon.  While Canberra 2 headed out for Mars.

Initial Survey Results over the next few months showed some significant findings.
Highlights:
Mercury has significant deposits of Dur Cor, Trit, Merc, sor, and uridum in reasonable accessibilities.  And earmarked for a mining colony
Venus has Huge amounts of materials at extremely low accessibilities.  Venus is marked as a possible backup mining location.
Mars and Luna have disappointingly no reasonable concentrations of Materials.

First Research Lab has finished construction. 

It is becoming apparent the Earth people are afraid of theoretical aliens since the possibility of Jump points to easily traverse systems.   
The new research lab is therefore dedicated to researching the components necessary to build a defensive base on earth from potential threats.

First Civilian Mining colony is established on Herschel-Rigollet.   A comet.   After much debate the  United Australian Republic allows the Duranium and Vendarite go to the civilian sector.

Active sensors at range of 100Mil Km is still under research and will be used in a second “sensor” base.   However this base provides the insurance the public of earth and Luna have being demanding for years.   The alternative is using mobile ships in space to detect and paint targets.

The first of a new class of ship is also designed.   The Haydes “science ship” is capable of not only surveying planets and bodys but also detect jump points to other solar systems in space.

Enforcer 1 and 2 is completed. 
They immediately begin policing local space much to the relief of the commercial haulers who have recently lost a ship to presumed “piracy”.   Mars also has reports of smuggling efforts of illegal materials

28/07/2020
Enforcer 002 Detects a unlicensed ship leaving Earth's atmosphere.   It hails the ship for identification as it closes along side the vessel.   it is rated as a small 7400T vessel.   probably a small illegal transport. 
Suddenly a panel opens up on the side of the ship to reveal a rail gun.   
“oh shi” was all Commander Oliver Johnston could say before the ship came under fire from the vessel. 
4 shots spray across the vessel.   The 3rd shot hitting the Enforcer right in the middle of its hull.   Luckily its armour held up to the hit.   However Oliver, who was standing up staring at the screen in disbelief, was thrown back into his chair.   It took him a second to recover and clutch his head before shouting “all hands to battle stations, Fire back at the bastard!”
Both Rail-guns opened fire after a 10 second delay.   The first combat in space was taking place.   
The Pirate ship was hit by all 8 shots some hitting in the same place.   Causing atmosphere to stream from the illegal vessel.   A smile crept up on Oliver's face.   He had trained his crew well. 

The pirate ship returns fire hitting again only once.   There aiming was obviously not a good as the navy.

Oliver could smell victory
no return fire from the stricken vessel as the last volley completely destroys the illegal vessel. 
Oliver relaxes in his chair.   Satisfied that his crew and ship had performed extremely well.   “damage report”
“6 cuts in the armour sir, in a couple of places its broken through the second layer” replied the chief engineer.   Oliver sighed.   Mabye not as one-sided as he thought.   One or two lucky hits and the ship would be in serious danger.   He orders the ship back to earth for repairs.

As Enforcer 1 closes on the is suddenly hit with shots from both ships with 5 hits to its side.   

Enforcer 1 takes another 7 hits before she can respond.     

Enforcer finally returns fire after a 20 second delay.     All her 8 hits are on target on the first ship and the exchange of fire continues.     Over the next 10 seconds of the battle the first pirate ship begins to stream atmosphere.     However Enforcer 1 now has some gaps in her armour Captain Grace Tyler Begins to worry this might not be a fight she could win

the first pirate ships engines explode and come to a complete stop.     Enforcer continues pursuit of the second craft railguns blazing.   
Enforcer 1 is taking a pounding though and finally takes a penetrating hit.     One of the crew quarters is de pressurised and evacuated.     Luckily as everybody is on battle stations no crew is killed.     Although some are injured.   

second pirate ship also begins taking internal damage

Both ships return fire at the same time.     - targeting the weapons on each others ships.   
Enforcer 1 has her first railgun destroyed with a penetrating hit.     3 casualties.   
Pirate ship has multiple small explosions as its railgun floats off the ship spinning into space.   

Both pirate ships disabled – they soon surrender and are slowly escorted by the enforcer to earth for prison.   

Enforcer 1 begins damage control on the crew quarters and hears back to earth for repairs.     
Enforcer 1 had being hit a total of 31 times and 3 areas the armour was completely gone.     The ship had suffered two internal hits one taking out crew quarters and another on the 1st railgun bay.   

Both pirate ships had there engines taken out and weapons disabled.     Among other damage.     

Hadyes 1 and 2 has finished refit.     
First ships are now completed that are capable of going to another system.   

Haydes 1 heard for the first jump point just outside the orbit of Jupiter.   
Haydes 2 heads for the second jump point which is in the opposite direction and slightly further out but still close to Saturns orbit

Haydes 1 Transits Jump Point one to Proxima Centauri.   
Initial scans show something better then they could ever imagine.     The system is smaller then Sol and easy to traverse.     The jump point only being 150 Million kms from the small dim star.     The second planet from the centre has 0.    85 gravity and a breathable atmosphere to humans! Although the surface temperature is a chilly -47.    6 degrees.     This planet would be a prime target for colonisation.   
Haydes 1 moves in to investigate the planet and perform a geo survey

Haydes 2 transit through jump point to to Barnards star.     This jump point is 660mil kms from another small dim star – this system also has a decent second planet from the star.     Non-breathable atmosphere but has a temperature of 32 degrees on the surface.

Enforcer mk I Encounters another pirate ship leaving earth orbit.   
Enforcer 2 is in the shipyard being refitted with the new engines.   
Now for enforcer 1 those new engines will come in handy in closing the gap.   

Pirate ship shockingly hits enforcer 1 from 17,000km away all 4 shots hit on target.    they obviously have increased there range and accuracy

after a fierce battle the pirate ship finally succumbs to the dual railguns of the police cruiser.    However she was heavily damaged in the time it took to close the range.    The new engines saved the ship obviously, but weapons would seriously need to be looked at as space is getting more and more dangerous.    There was no internal hits but there were gaps in 2 of her hulls.

Jump Haydes 2 Transits into Alpha Centari from Barnards Star.    A binary system with the entry point 1.   7 Billion km from the a component and the b component orbited roughly 3 bill km radius.   

Planet A 4 has a colony cost of 2.    with a almost breathable atmosphere (ox 0.   6 21%) however was hot at 58 degrees.   
Also orbiting the planet seemed to be a huge wreck of unknown time over 26,000 tons.    Roughly the size of a large freighter but appears to be of a warship – like design.   
Jump Haydes 2 – commanded by Commander Archie Banks heads out to investigate.

Jump Haydes 1 transits into Epsilon Indi from Proxima Centauri.   Scans show a huge binary system with no interesting planets for colonisation.   The b component orbits the a @ 220 billion kilometres!
The jump point is only 1.  2 billion from the primary.   The ship begins its survey


By the end of april Jump Haydes 2 in Alpha Centari had confirmed the wreck was from a unknown class of alien ship.   This is somewhat alarming to earth and there are calls beginning for a space navy.   Much like the conventional armies of countries on earth to protect earth from any threat. 
There is no sign of the attackers of the ship

Ship completes survey of Alpha Centari 4.   scans show large amounts of hard to access minerals (0.  1) however there also seems to be ancient ruins on the planet! Earth decides to assemble expert xeonoligy team to hitch a ride on the next ship available to system to investigate.   This could be the biggest find yet confirming aliens exist – good or bad – or at least did exist.

21/08/2031 Mammoth 003 comes under fire from a pirate vessel.   The same size previously seen pirate vessels with a single railgun – but they have never being so daring as attacking a freighter in earth orbit.

Enforcer 1 commanded by Captain Grace Tyler Moves to intercept

as enforcer 1 moves to engage it notices the pirate ship is firing every 5 seconds, the pirates have better weaponry. 
Mammoth 3 suffers internal damage and explodes one of its cargo holds

the Pirate ship then starts boosting away at a impressive 1655km/s – enforcer 1 with its upgraded engines could easily catch it still – however the improvements of the pirates technology was worrying.   The ship appears to be on a course for Mars. 

The pirate ship again opens fire at 15km range outside the range of the enforcer.   Fortunately its initial shots all miss
Both ships exchange shots at the same time.   Enforcer is hit twice while the Pirate ship is hit all 8 times. 

Suddenly two smaller ships launch from the pirate vessel.   Scanned at 1100T they immediately turn on the enforcer and open fire.   
All 4 ships exchange fire the Enforcer ignoring the two small ships and hitting the main vessel hard.   Causing it to stream atmosphere as one of its engines explode
The enforcer in return is pummelled by all 3 craft wearing away its armour.   the two small craft breaking off and bracketing the enforcer hitting it from all sides. 
All 3 pirate ships fire every 5 seconds.   3 times as much firepower then the enforcers 2 guns can handle.   Her commander calls for assistance from the second enforcer but doubts it will reach her in time. 

Enforcer 1 concentrates on the main ship and explodes her remaining engine.   The ship is dead in the water but still firing relentlessly
Enforcer 1 receives its first breach of her armour destroying her crew quarters again.   0 casualties
Enforcer 1 continues to be hit hard her armour wearing thin however manages to put up a valiant fight destroying one of the “cargo holds” on the pirate vessels.   In return taking a hit to her engine but staying intact and barely operational. 

In the next exchange the return fire hits railgun number 1 and takes it out.   5 casualties.   She was now out gunned 3 to 1 and 6 to 1 in firepower.   Her armour would not hold up much longer. 
2 more crew quarters are destroyed.   Life support will be questionable after the battle if the ship survives.   
One of the two engines on the enforcer explode.   10 casualties
the main pirate vessel continues to take hits but refuses to succumb.   Its active sensor goes off-line after the last volley but the two smaller ships also have sensors on them. 
Enforcers armour is now almost completely gone.   She is exposed
the next round of hits are devastating.   Another crew quarters goes down, her only reactor to power the weapons explodes, em sensor is damaged and her only active sensor room is hit and is open to space.   Enforcer 1 is no longer combat capable, blind, and in trouble.   
The next volley of hits takes out her remaining railgun and a fuel storage pod.   Now 5 out of 6 crew quarters are destroyed.   Life support is slowly failing

“Commander! We need to abandon ship!”  Remarked her 2nd in command .  Commander Grace Tyler quietly responded “the pods were on deck 3, that whole area is open to space.   Its being a honour serving with you” silence on the ship as they waited for the end.  .   silence.  .  . 
“Commander! They.  .  .   they are moving away? “ the sensor operator remarked using the only remaining sensor on board.   Thermals. 
“what? … right, damage control teams get life support back online now! Helm, set a course for earth.  ”
Enforcer 2 soon joined her sister ship however the pirates were no longer in sight. 
The entire hull is peppered with impacts, deck 3 is completely open to space with only a single life support compartment on that section is valiantly still operating.   It is only accessible via space walk and is a miracle it is still operating.   One of her two engines has exploded and her rail guns missing.   Its s sad sight to see. 
 Enforcer 2  escorts her stricken sister back to the shipyard for repairs.   Needing to relay instructions for course changes as she is still blind.   

The political fallout from the engagement hits hard.   Initially the police tried to keep it quiet however the police vessel in the shipyard with huge battle scars could not be kept quiet for long. 
Civilians around the world demand better protection as “pirates “ appear to have the better weapons then even the best the Police can muster.   There are protests in the steets demanding the government field a proper navy to protect earth from not only pirates, but also potential aliens. 
This becomes a promise from the president and components for a missile cruiser is soon designed and developed with the design planned to be finalised by the end of the year.   this somewhat appeases the crowd however they are still worried about the pirate “combat ships” that easily handled the police vessel.

Haydes 1 was about to withdraw to check out jump point 6 when the sensor operater interrupted.   “mam – the second planet – it has a breathable atmosphere, and surface temp is approximately -7 degrees!
Haydes 1 moves closer to investigate, this world could be a potential goldmine for human expansion into other solar systems.

Jump Haydes 2 Transits from Jump Point 5 In the sol system into Luten 143-23.   the only initial planet of note is Planet 2.   has a colony cost of 2 however has a 80% methane atmosphere.   Jump Haydes Begins survey.

The Pirates return after a break. 
Another 7400T vessel is spotted leaving earths atmosphere.   The police dont take any chances this time and both enforcers fly together to intercept the craft.   Defence force 1 (the two Melbourne's) were on task force training and are out of range to assist. 
The New vessel is moving away at 2702km/s .   they are surprisingly efficient at stealing military tech. 
With the small difference in speed it takes a long time for the enforcers to catch the pirate ship
 it takes close to 10 minutes to close a 200k range.   
Again the pirate ship reveals a single railgun and launches a small railgun FAC.   But strangely enough only one.   The enforcers struggle to reach weapons range.   They come under intital fire before they get into range but only damages 1's armour. 
“focus fire on the FAC first it will be a easier target”
after 30 seconds of pot shots from the pirates the enforcer's close range enough to open fire.   They open fire hitting the FAC hard scoring 8 internal shots.   Effectively taking it out of action.   The enforcers switched fire back to the main pirate vessel.   The pirates were on the back foot and outmatched. 
Before they can open fire on the Main vessel the pirates respond.   Much to the surprise of Captain Dominic Yates the pirate vessel launched two large Missiles
“contact – size 10! brac.  .  .  ” the enforcer 1 was hit hard by both missiles blowing it completely off course.   
Captain Ben Wilkinson on the enforcer 2 had a front row seat to the spectacular explosions.   
“captain, size 14 nuclear detonations detected on 1's hull.   My god.  ” exclaimed the sensor operator. 
“open a channel” ordered Ben “Dominic, are you okay?”
loud alarms and commotion is heard on the line – after a few seconds he responds
“We are okay go get that bastard”
Enforcer 1 was still spiralling away from the battle but starting to recover.   However it was now far behind 2 and out of engagement range.   It was now up to Ben and Enforcer 2 to finish the job. 

The two ships exchange volleys and enforcer 2 is the first to draw blood with internal hits
shortly after the fuel storage on the pirate ship blows and slows to a hault.   At this point the crew surrender as they had no options left.   After clean-up enforcer 1 and 2 return to earth for repairs.   The pirates continue to challenge and prove quite capable to defend themselves. 
Despite the surprise missiles the armour on enforcer 1 held up to the onslaught and suffered no internal hits.   Repairs begin as soon as a shipyard slip comes available.

In response to the pirates superior railguns, the military have developed a new generation of guns.   Although the new gun is the same size as the previous version – it fires 3 times faster and has twice the range of the current weapons used on the enforcers.   When a adequate shipyard becomes available the new Railguns will be mounted on the Enforcers and planned future military ships.

First Melbourne Class Is constructed.   Much to the celebration of the public.   It would be commanded by Commodore William Barber – Previously commander of Enforcer 1 and has proven himself in combat.

the two ships begin fleet manoeuvres which would write the book for operating in a task force in the future.

New Class of vessel is designed.   The short-ranged “Wolf” is designed to defend both colonies and jump points from potential threats with a small, cheap and disposable design.   Weighing at 1000T it contained the newly designed military railgun that could devastate potential threats at close range.   Its impressive top speed comes from a boosted 300T drive.

In the Recently discovered system of Kaptenys star – the first alien race is detected! Jump Haydes 1 not only detecting a large population on planet 3, but 4 ships heading towards her at 4473km/s.   Too fast for her to outrun.   Shortly after she detected numerous smaller craft swarming towards here.  .   to many to count.   She issues a SOS before the  ship was hit by strength 8 warheads and disintegrated. 
Once the report made its way back to the UAR they were left speechless.   They had made contact finally with a live alien race yet they were undoubtedly hostile.   Whats worse is that they appeared significantly more advanced then the UAR.   Previously there Melbourne class Missile Destroyers were designed to stay at long range outside of return fire range to engage targets, and be able to keep that range with there higher-then-average dedication to engine space.   However it was clear now that they were not the fastest or probably longest range ship out there, and they would need defending in close quarters and from missile attack. 


In response to this the UAR designed a new ship to fit both roles.   The Collins class would use the new military rail gun in mass.   Its 5000T hull wielding 4 in total.   Although 5 Wolf class FAC's would have more fire-power  and speed for the same tonnage, the Collins had much greater range and survivability then the Wolfs, however the notion was not lost on the UAR that wolfs with there greater speed and small cross-section could be very useful in a fleet engagement.   They would just need a “Carrier” to get them there.

Sentinel 3 and 4 are completed just as the shipyard finishes re-tooling for the new Collins class.   2 begin construction immediately.

Buffallo 1 and 2 are completed – the jumpgate constructors split and begin building gates into Barnards star and to Epsilon Indi.   These are the two most promising routes to colonies outside the sol system. 

04/06/36
5th Melbourne Class and the 8th and 9th wolf class ships finish construction.   UAR forces are starting to look reasonable to the public.   The President is commended in keeping his promise to keep the skies safe.   Pirates had not being seen for a number of years and profits from inter-colony trading was booming.

Almost on Cue – while Wolf Pack 1 consisting of 5 Wolf class FAC's and 1 Sentinal sensor contacts while on routine patrol around Mars.   The signals were coming from Phobos.   They detected 2 familiar Pirate Designs designated Tribals + a new 6500T design.   The tribals were known to have at least one railgun.   And can launch at least 2 FAC's each.   And sometimes carrying missiles.   
Wolf Pack 1 immediately begins pursuit.   However with the prospective fire-power of the pirate fleet  Battle Group 1 – consisting of 4 Melbourne class Destroyers and another sentinel were called to assist.    They were on task force training exercises near Mars and was just within there sensor range to provide assistance if needed.   

The Sentinel in Wolf Packs fleet detaches to allow the Wolf Class FAC's to peruse at 3800km/s.   The pirate ships were moving at a modest 1654km/s speed towards Saturn.   

Quickly the Gap was closed between the Wolves and its prey.   The Tribals launched FAC's as predicted – but there was 4 of them! The real fleet battle had begun.   4 Pirate FAC's vs 5 UAR FACs. 

As the fight begins the main pirate ships continue retreating towards Saturn.   

The Wolf Pack splits in two and targets the first two FAC's between them.   
The First Salvo exchanged between the FACs was mainly superficial damage.   The focus fire of the UAR however managed to score a internal hit once on both targeted FAC's damaging there weapon systems.   
The next few salvos are worse for the pirates as the first two FACs targeted take a pounding.   Losing systems and streaming atmosphere.   They are quickly taken out of the fight.   The UAR switches targets to the remaining 2 FACS and begin firing.   Although now some of there FACs are taking significant armour damage in the dogfight.   Of note was Wolf 3 which had taken a hit to its engine effectively disabling it for the rest of the fight.   

30 seconds into the fight the newly Designated “Predator” class pirate ship woke up.   Firing a high powered weapon at 60k distance into the dogfight.   It missed any targets but the apparent “Laser” weapon was not its only surprise.   3 size 10 missiles were detected being launched from the ship. 

After only 45 seconds the dogfight was over.   All 4 FACs from the pirates were destroyed.   The UAR  fleet only taking minor armour damage apart from wolf 3 – which had a destroyed engine.   Attention turned to the 3 main ships.   The incoming missiles moved past the FAC fleet and towards the overseeing Sentinel.   In full retreat the Sentinels was able to dodge all 3 missiles against the odds.   

As the UAR FAC's close in on the Main Vessels – the Laser from the Predator opens up again scoring a direct hit on Wolf 5.   the vessel is instantly sawn in half by the powerful laser.   - causing 16 points of damage and additional 4 shock damage.   The ship is destroyed.   The remaining 3 wolfs pull back worried about the Laser weapon – keeping out of range.   As there combined fire-power could not take down all 3 vessels knowing the other two would be at least armed with 1 railgun. 

The Battle Group that was observing from afar heard the retreat.   They were currently 70 million Kms from the battle.   But there missiles had a range of 100 million.   The 3 Melbourne class each picked a target and opened fire with there missile launchers.   3 missiles per ship in 4 salvoes.   

Wolf Pack 1 Withdraws to Earth.   The sentinel stops by on the way to collect all the lifepods.   While the pirate ships are still retreating.   The salvoes from Battle group 1 would take some time to reach the Pirate ships. 

Sentinel 3 is unexpectedly hit by 2 strength 20 warheads.   The ship is shot off course but its large armour belt protects it from most of the shock.   The sensitive area search sensor is destroyed and one engineering deck – but is otherwise okay.   It heads back to Earth for repairs.   

With Wolf pack 1 in full retreat the pirate ships continue towards Saturn.   It would be approx 2 hours  before the missiles from Battle Group 1 Meet them.   

The first salvo reaches the 3 pirate ships.   The two Tribals take damage and begin streaming atmosphere as expected.   However the new Predator class ship does not take any hits.   Instead small energy weapon impacts are detected.   The salvo was ineffective and all 3 missiles bound for the ship is destroyed.   

The second salvo has more success.   The Predator takes 2 hits but does not stream atmosphere.   It is worryingly better armoured then normal pirate ships.   

Third salvo is completely destroyed by the Predator.   However the Tribals are slowing and look to be dead in the water.   

With the last salvo one hit is made on the Predator.   Again no internal damage.   Both Tribles are still alive but are no longer moving.   

The Remaining 3 Wolfs are ordered to turn around and finish off the two disabled Pirate Ships.   They comply eager to show there usefulness.   They quickly close and destroy the two ships without incident.   Picking up the survives and heading back to earth

the Remaining Pirate ship is lost on sensors.   Last seen heading towards Saturn.   A later search does not find the missing ship.

first 2 Collins Class Escorts are completed.   2 more begin construction.

This year was quite on the military front.   More Warships were completed but no sign of aliens or pirates.   Later in the year Luna finished its Terraforming.   Finally making the air breathable and was a boom to population growth.   Nearly at the same time Jump Gates were completed to Barnards Star and Proxima Centauri.   Both had habitable worlds that would be targeted for the first colonisation effort outside the sol system.   First is Proxima Centauri A – II.   With a colony cost of 1.  7 and easy target to Terraform into a fully fledged colony.   At the same time Barnards Star A- II was colonised.   This planet had a colony cost of 2.   but had significant resources that could be mined in the future.  lo It also led on to 2 more systems with colonisation targets.   Alpha Centauri was particular interest due to the Ancient Ruins and Wrecks found there. 

By the end of the year Proxima Centairi A II had 2 million colonists stationed there.   While Barnards star had the infrastructure.   The Civilian Shipping lines found Proxima Centari more profit worthy for now.   Luna had almost 30,000 Infrastructure now unused.   And the Civilian Transports were busy filling orders to move this to the new systems.

Research had completed on new Ion Drive Technology.   A new wave of warships were to be designed and built around the new drive.   All shipyards were now quiet awaiting the new designs.   It would be a few years before any actual physical benefits would be seen.   But the UAR was planning now for the future.

4 Collins class Destroyer escorts
4 Sentinal class Monitors. 
2 Enforcer class Patrol Cruisers
19 Wolf Class FAC's

Consisting of 2 main battle groups + reserves and 3 “Wolf Pack's” + reserves.
