Playthrough
« on: July 19, 2017, 05:22:55 PM »
Folks, if anybody is interested, I am 91 episodes into a conventional start playthrough.  It's going pretty well although its far from flawless.  I am getting some tough love from the spoilers.

I wanted to post some designs for reference, comment and/or discussion.  I'm up past episode 90, and still on ion engine tech.  With that being said, I have been using gunboats (ie FAC's) to some extent.  Here are the current designs:

ECM 10

Missile to hit chances are vs targets moving at 3000 km/s, 5000 km/s and 10,000 km/s

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

GB(C) - "Charlie Boat" - Command and control version, used to provide long range sensor support to gunboats and fighters.  I often have one attached to each carrier wing.

Hey,
I'm watching your LP, keep em coming!
But for me the most astonishing thing was when (in which episode was it?) you showed how your game sped up after switching to a ryzen and a pcie ssd. I still can't explain that, I'd like to hear what others think about it.

I don't think the Ryzen helps much, at least not with Aurora (great processor, great value, just not going to change Aurora performance much).  In Aurora there is basically the assload of database IO that happens with each turn.  NVMe is better at both long sequential operations and can actually do IO in parallel for smaller operations, both of which vastly increase performance with database transactions, usually way more important to server performance, not game performance.  Newer games, that load almost everything into memory on the front end won't see that kind of mid game boost.  Now if we can get some multi-threaded joy with Aurora C#, maybe the Rizen can start improving things too  ;D

Yeah but many people tried to run aurora from a ramdisk and it didn't improve performance at all. That's why I don't understand why would your pcie ssd help? I don't think the game is io limited. I guess windows caches the mdb file in memory anyways.

Maybe it's placebo effect?  It seems better.
