New crewmen per year
« on: January 27, 2012, 07:00:14 PM »
On the Teams/Academy page of the Population and Production window, is there any way to increase the number of new crewmen (not officers, but crew) that you receive each year?

I already have ten Military Academies on Earth.

If you have racial training set way up you can lower that. The tooltip says that academies produce 1000/training level crew per year.

Racial Training level = 1

Can I build more than ten Military Academies?

I think my basic problem might be that my ship construction program is too ambitious... does Earth really NEED multiple fleets of 40,000-ton warships in 1979?

(I started as a conventional start in 1948, with the Roswell incident).

Are you able to utilize the space for non-support purposes that early?

I started the game as a conventional start, 1948, real-world population for that year (so about 3.5 billion). That gave me loads of income. It took me more than thirty years to convert my Conventional Industries to Trans-Newtonian... I'm still not really finished with that task... but the high Pop income allowed me to build and run loads of research facilities, so I'm already up to about 130 labs in 1980.

That puts me at the Internal Confinement Fusion Power level... so yes, I can build some decent components for my ships.

Most of my Navy is modular... Engine sections towing Jump sections towing ASM sections (or Hangar sections) towing PD sections (or Magazine/Fuel sections)... all 5,000-ton modules, linked together five-at-a-time with tractor beams into 25,000-ton "ships".

But lately I've been building more conventional, 40,000-ton ships: Battle-Management Vessels, Jump Tenders, Aircraft Carriers, ASM-armed Battle-Cruisers, etc.

Hmm, mars and mercury are both relatively easy to terraform if you don't want to look outside of sol for colonies. try that out.

I've got plenty of places to build Naval Academies... I've already terraformed Mars and five extra-Solar colonies up to class-0. I was just wondering if there was more that I could do on Earth to boost my rate of new crewmen.

Apparently not.

I think the answer to this is a resounding Yes.

As far as I know, there's no limit to the amount of military academies (and spaceports and DSTS) you can place and run on a single colony - except perhaps for the database's variable type limit. Even if it's a small integer it should be a good 65,553 or higher :)

Unfortunatly, too many academies spawn too many employees.  You end up with hundreds more ground forces, administrators, and scientists than you could ever need-- all of which have their stats tracked continuously whether they do anything or not.  I try to avoid this as it contributes to late game slowdown.

An obvious point is that you can designate quite a few things as "conscripts only".  All civilian ships and all military "modules" that do contain neither missile launchers, nor beam weapons.

This can save quite a bit of crew, and the -10% modifier on reloading & hit chances does not affect vessels which have nothing to reload and nothing to hit. . .

Why do you think there's a limit of 10?  I know of no such limit....
