Precursor Return: Background History

The Precursors were once an extremely large and powerful civilization, occupying almost the entire galaxy.  Their technology made the younger empires look like cavemen in comparison, and they had a extremely powerful fleet.  However, once they had control of their galaxy, they took the bulk of their fleets, and departed to other galaxies, leaving only a fraction of their forces to defend their galaxy.  This proved to be a fatal mistake, since ten years later, stable wormholes started appearing.  Leading Precursor scientists suggested that they were artificially generated, but the military rejected this theory, dismissing them as a natural phenomenon.  They however, changed their mind, when ships started coming out of them.  These ships were hostile, and much more advanced than the Precursors.  They brought  huge dreadnoughts, and immense fleets, and the Precursors fought valiantly, but they were spread few and far between, and could not defend against them.  They watched in sheer horror, as their fleets were vaporized, and entire worlds wiped clean of life.  Everyone knew that they were doomed, but they demanded that they were not forgotten.  Thus, the Perseverance was started.

All of their scientists worked together, trying to find a way to achieve this.  A month later, they had decided.  They were going to make a vault, of sorts, that would keep an archive of all their technological data, resources, and most importantly, a factory;  a factory that could make robots.  Sentient robots, that could do exactly what they could, that would be activated after a set period of time, to reclaim their galaxy, and ensure that the main Precursor fleet should arrive safely.  The Precursors were determined, and finished it.  They marvelled at the huge underground facility, but then realized a flaw; what if the Invaders found it?  Thus, they modified their best cloaking technology, to work on a massive scale, and hid their work.

((Editors note; cloaks aren’t what you may interpret them as; they don’t make things invisible, they make it extremely hard for any kind of sensor to detect. ))

More than twenty thousand years later, this factory activated, and started churning out drones. .  They only knew basic information; how to survive, their designation, and most importantly - their mission.  Even though they were confused, they decided to start their mission.  They headed to the archive, however, twenty thousand years had gotten the better of it, and most of the data was corrupted.  What was in-tact, though, was a map of the star system; Sol.  Sol was a young yellow star, with six planets, and two gas giants.  The planet that they were on; Earth, was what could be considered “habitable”.  The drones could live on almost any planet or moon, provided it wasn’t extremely hot.  In addition to the solar system map, there were six “Jump Points”.  This made no sense to them, and they assumed that what they needed was in the corrupted archive.  Slightly motivated, they went to the surface.  After exploring it, they found large clusters of low-tech buildings.  They all appeared to be abandoned, so they commandeered them.  After a month of work, they managed to make enough recharging stations for the populations, as well as a data recovery centre that could restore sections of the archive.  They also re-activated most of their factories, and a small, 1000 ton shipyard.
