component destroyed from zero damage?
« on: February 09, 2010, 09:39:42 AM »
Hi, just to make sure is this a normal thing:

My fleet is getting pounded by alien missiles and my AA is woefully inadequate.

ship X is hit by a missile with S7 warhead,
6 damage is absorbed by armour,
reactor core is destroyed on ship X after receiving 0 damage, 0 casualties.

Is this some fraction of a damage point that is destroying the module?
What I think happened is that the reactor has an int. armour rating of 0, but this is still counted as a layer of armour?

Good thing the reactor dodnt blow, because it is the first of my ships to survive a 12 missile volley.
If they ever make it back, they will be heroes and the CO will receive a medal...if any of my ships make it home. :p

Yes, the missile warhead looked like this:
. X
XXX
XXX
which destroyed a three wide by two deep chunk of ship's armour, and the 'point' of the warhead penetrated, rolled on the DAC (hitting 'reactor'), where 0 of 1 remaining points of damage were absorbed by the armour, and then 1 point hit the reactor, possibly destroying it.  (Chance of destruction: 1/(# HTK of reactor))

I think a bit more is going on, a possible (typo) bug.
Also. No. there is 0 damage being done to the reactor, destroying it. (according to the events log)

As I've been paying more attention to the massacre, I've noticed reactors are always destroyed by 0 damage, not always 0 casualties when destroyed though.

Actually my lone surviving ship was bombarded by a secondary salvo, the first hit did 3 damage to shields, 1 to shield generator, 0 to reactor, destroying the structural integrity.

A system with less than 1 HTK (such as a small reactor) still takes up one 'space' on the DAC, is destroyed if hit by one point of damage, but does not 'absorb' that point of damage (which then goes on to hit something else).  So yes, 0 HTK systems will be destroyed by 0 points of damage (on the way to something else taking one point of damage).  It's entry on the DAC works out to "Reactor, plus roll again."

ahhh!

That explains it.
The reactor in question is indeed below 1 HS.
So not a bug, just a feature.

(YAY! I posted in the right boards! ;) )

edit:
That feature ruins my many small reactors strategy; from a small loss for a hit, it is turned into a many possible secondary explosions gambit.

I recommend multiple installations of 2 HS reactors.
