Assigning TG to a new TF
« on: October 20, 2013, 02:50:43 AM »
Hi,

I would like to assign my combat fleet TG to a TF I created, but even if I change in the dropdown box of the TG the TF to the new one (at the top left of the TG window), then this is not saved. So how I do that?

You need to create the TG from the organization menu in Fleets menu, last tab I think. The dropdown menu does not work for reassignement.

You then need to create the task group from the button one row below "Create Task Group"/"Branch Only"

The "Add TG" button adds ships from the currently selected TG to the currently selected branch in the org tree.  "Create TG" does what it says: it creates a new TG from all the ships in the same location from the selected org tree branch.

Ok, I'm having some problems with this and cannot for the life of me figure it out.  Here's the situation:

I've built up over the first 40 years of SPACE 70-some ships in a few dozen different task groups doing various things.  They've all been under one TF, Fleet Headquarters.

I've reached the point where I want to divide command into two TFs, so I need to learn how to do this.  I renamed the existing one to Sol Support Flotilla, and created a new TF called Sol Defense Fleet.  So, remembering this thread, I've tried different approaches, none of which worked.

** Every time I create a new task group via the 'Task Group Orders' tab, it is automatically assigned to the SSF even if I have the SDF selected in the Task Force dropdown.  Ergo, even if I wanted to, I cannot simply create a bunch of new task groups, shift the ships over to those one-by-one, and delete the old TGs because I can't create TGs directly in the new Task Force.  Both Task Forces are in the same location(Earth), though the SDF has no ships(because I can't put any into it :))

** Heading over to Naval Organization then, nothing over there works either.  All that's listed in the big white 'Naval Organization' list to the left is the two TFs, none of the individual ships and there's no way to expand the tree like in Nibelung's screenshot.  If I click on Create Task Group -- Branch Only I get 'Please select a branch on the organization chart' -- even though I have one of them selected.  Doesn't matter whether I select the SDF or the SSF or neither one, I get the same message.

So what in the name of Armok am I supposed to do here?

Ok so, finally figured it out.  I needed to add a subordinate level under the TF via 'Modify Organization Branches --> Add' before I could actually put any TGs into it.  Just in case anybody else ever has the same problem, there it is.

Now to spend about six bazillion hours with this screen to get the navy set up properly ...

It is "esoteric" or "eclectic" but then you sort it out...and only occasionally goof up the process.

It looks like in 6.4 that the way will become easier as the drop down menu on the task force page will work and you can change TF's chains of command with something that is a lot more straight forward.

So what is the biggest game play advantage of bothering to actually set this up?

Or is it just for RP/OOB and ordering your own head reasons it's done?

TFs can be assigned officers and staffs. They then provide their bonuses to the TF ships while in the same system.

If you mean why bother with the Naval organisation tab?

It is a good way of managing your fleets into a hierarchical structure where you can quickly create or merge TG with preset names.

It is a good way of managing fighters, escort/patrol/recon detachment etc.

I often use it to get a good sense of overview and like it better to find TG than usingthe drop down list to choose a TG. Especially when I have huge numbers of them.

I meant the organization below additional TFs. Thanks Jorgen_CAB looks like it's mostly to aid management/hierarchy and overview then.
