The Commonwealth Space Forces of 2057
« on: May 04, 2014, 03:26:10 PM »
These are the designs I created at start in the game I just started.  I've had Aurora sitting on my hard drive for a long time, but this will be the first game I create that I intend to do more with besides just creating random designs and tinkering with the game.  (Well, second; I did have a short-lived game going on one of the version 5 releases that unfortunately didn't survive a hard-drive reformat. )

In my first try at starting this game, I had allowed the computer to spend my initial research points and design tech systems and classes for me, but after tinkering with them I was rather unsatisfied with the results.  So I restarted the game and spent my own research points, designing my tech systems and classes from scratch.

Some background on the game:

In the early 21st century, the various major powers of Earth united to form the Solar Commonwealth.  (I'm working on a timeline describing the political and scientific events that led to the formation of the Commonwealth and its push into space up to the start of the game, which I'm considering posting in the fiction forum(along with the events of the game itself, as it progresses) if people are interested in reading it.

After discovering several alien ruins throughout the Sol system conclusively answered the question of whether or not humanity was alone in space, the Commonwealth decided it would be necessary to build an armed force to supplement and protect the various commercial and survey vessels already in service in case more aliens were encountered.  The various militaries and space services of the Commonwealth's member nations were fused and reorganized into the ships of the Commonwealth Space Forces(abbreviated ComForce),  and the ground-based units of the Commonwealth Planetary Guard (abb.  ComGuard).  The game starts in 2057, in the early stages of the Commonwealth's initial military buildup.

In terms of weapons research, I concentrated on lasers, railguns, and missiles/missile launchers.  ComForce doctrine calls for any armed force to be able to fire a single overwhelming salvo at the outset of an engagement, so most offensive ships are equipped with both box launchers and standard launchers(in order to be able to continue the missile engagement as they close to beam range).  The idea is that the first mass salvo will hopefully saturate the target's defenses and, if not destroying the enemy outright, at least weaken their defenses enough to put them at a significant disadvantage if they choose to continue the engagement or can't withdraw.

I opted to create a small stable of (mostly) generalist designs, instead of the large stable of specialized, one-weapon designs that the auto-design feature comes up with.  All ships will be capable of both offensive and defensive fire; most ships are missile-armed, backed up by laser turrets and/or railguns.  The mix of these weapons and the balance between offense and defense will depend on the ship's size and intended purpose.  (For example, missile platforms will carry few or no beam weapons and light defensive batteries, while the opposite applies to command and escort ships, and the general, “middle of the road” combat designs will mount a little of everything. )

Since this is my first stab at an actual game in Aurora, I'm not sure how good/effective the choices I made in the design of my ships are/will be.  Some decisions (weapons mix, engine/sensor choices, etc. ) I made for role-play considerations as much as anything else, and may be changed as the game progresses as I find out what works and what doesn't.  I'm interested in any feedback the community has to offer, though I might not implement advice right away as I'm intending this to be a role-play campaign and any changes to doctrine in ship design or combat strategy and tactics might wait until events in the game show the Commonwealth leadership that it messed up.  All information presented below is current as of game start on January 1, 2057.

The document with my designs and the notes I made ended up being pretty big, so I'm going to split it into multiple posts following this one.  As I said, I'm eager for any feedback and/or questions anyone may have.

ComForce Commercial Auxiliaries

This category includes commercial-type vessels flying under ComForce registry – transports, tankers, the like – that, under ideal circumstances, operate in a strictly support role inside systems already claimed and occupied by forces of the Commonwealth.

Freighters use the prefix CRMV(Commonwealth Registered Merchant Vessel), all others use the standard CS(Commonwealth Starship).

This design is classed as a Commercial Vessel for maintenance purposes

Ships In Service: CRMV Thyssen
Ships Under Construction: CRMV Dodsal, CRMV Patterson, CRMV Wayfarer

Notes: The primary heavy lift vessel of the Commonwealth fleet, the Thyssens' first task will likely be to transport infrastructure and other prefabricated structures to the newly established Commonwealth colonies on Luna and Mars.   After jump gates are built on any jump points in Sol, they will likely be used for the same mission to any Commonwealth colonies established outside the Sol system.

Intended Deployment Time: 12 months    Spare Berths 29

Renault-Kessler Astra-1 Ion Drive (1)    Power 132    Fuel Use 79.95%    Signature 99    Exp 11%
Fuel Capacity 160,000 Litres    Range 42.4 billion km   (63 days at full power)

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Notes: The Dalsland-class ships have the distinction of being the fastest ships in the ComForce inventory as of January 1, 2057.   They are designed to transport small groups of personnel quickly to a destination; for example, moving a science team from Earth to an unsurveyed planet, a diplomatic team to meet with a new alien race, or an officer(or small group of officers) to a new assignment.   (Which may be moot, as I'm not sure yet if Aurora handles the latter sort of movement automatically if an officer's intended assignment is outside the capital, but the design was created mainly for RP purposes, so I'm not going to worry about it even if that's the case.  )

Ships In Service: CS Dalsland, CS Aland, CS Holstein, CS Jutland, CS Karelia, CS Lapland, CS Skane, CS Trondheim, CS Zealand
Ships Under Construction: None

Maint Life 0 Years     MSP 0    AFR 300%    IFR 4.2%    1YR 0    5YR 0    Max Repair 6 MSP
Intended Deployment Time: 9 months    Flight Crew Berths 1
Hangar Deck Capacity 1000 tons

Fuel Capacity 100,000 Litres    Range N/A

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Ships In Service: International Space Station

Notes: Though the pre-Commonwealth International Space Station was originally scheduled for decommissioning sometime around 2028, its service life was extended with a series of overhauls and the addition of several modules.   Fuel modules and a basic hangar were added to the station in order to allow it to serve as a staging and refueling point for manned expeditions into the Sol system; however, by 2057, the station is quickly approaching obsolescence as star-faring vessels have grown beyond the station's capacity to support.   Currently, the station is home to a single Dalsland-class courier and crewed by just over two dozen caretakers and engineers under the command of a ComForce lieutenant commander.   It will likely be decommissioned at some point within the next three to five years at the latest.

Geological Survey Sensors (1)   1 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Ships In Service: CS Everest, CS McKinley, CS Balmhorn, CS Nanda Devi
Ships Under Construction: None

Notes: A basic planetary survey design, the Everest was the first ship to be built with an experimental Daimler jump drive, which will allow it to traverse any jump points discovered in the Sol system.  In addition to a geosurvey sensor package, the class is outfitted with both EM and thermal passive sensors to help it detect any signs of habitation on a surveyed planet – not to mention signs of non-human ships which may be present in a system upon arrival.

Molniya NE103 Zhuk-3 EM Sensor (1)     Sensitivity 24     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  24m km
Gravitational Survey Sensors (3)   3 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Ships In Service: CS Outreach, CS Farsight
Ships Under Construction: CS Concept, CS Discovery, CS Stargazer

Notes: The gravsurvey counterpart to the Everest-class.  While not mounted with as strong of a passive sensor array as the Everests, the size of the Outreach's grav sensor package should allow it to quickly survey potential jump points in a system and move on.

Geological Survey Sensors (1)   1 Survey Points Per Hour

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Ships In Service: CS Abel Tasman
Ships Under Construction: CS Jacques Cousteau, CS Robert Ballard

Notes: Although the Tasman's primary mission is to serve as a command ship for survey squadrons operating outside of Commonwealth-held space, its speed, jump capability and light anti-missile defenses allow it to operate as a command ship for scouting groups or even fleet units in a pinch.  (However, its thin armor and lack of defenses beyond the single CIWS emplacement mean that operating as a flagship for a combat unit is an extremely risky proposition, and should not be done if a Doneval- or Luzerne-class ship is available. )

Intended Deployment Time: 12 months    Spare Berths 4

Renault-Kessler Astra-1 Ion Drive (6)    Power 132    Fuel Use 79.95%    Signature 99    Exp 11%
Fuel Capacity 500,000 Litres    Range 20.5 billion km   (32 days at full power)

General Dynamics Phalanx-1 CIWS (1x2)    Range 1000 km     TS: 16000 km/s     ROF 5       Base 50% To Hit
Alliant ALSAS-1 Early Warning System (1)     GPS 23040     Range 206.1m km    Resolution 80

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

Ships In Service: CS Beacon, CS Guardian
Ships Under Construction: None

Notes: With its speed(second in ComForce only to the Dalsland-class couriers) and the long range of its powerful early-warning sensors, the Beacon-class ship is designed as a trip-wire system of sorts.  In theory, it has the sensor range to observe multiple jump points at once(depending on a system's jump point dispersal) and quickly disengage to warn the fleet in case unidentified ships appear in-system.  Although it could also make an effective fleet scout, current ComForce doctrine prohibits the Beacons from operating outside systems that have been explored by the Commonwealth, as its undoubtedly substantial EM signature would stick out like a sore thumb to any unfriendly spy ships operating within a system.

ComForce Warships

All ComForce ships with a significant offensive armament or a designated role in a combat force(command, escort) fall under this category.

All ships in this category use the prefix CS(Commonwealth Starship).   (The exceptions are attack craft, missile boats, and light attack craft, which are only given alpha-numerical designations upon their commissioning – A for attack craft, M for missle boats, L for light attack craft, and S for small scout craft like the Narwhal.  )

Notes: The Luzerne-class is designed with all the luxuries and redundancies that the smaller Doneval- and Tasman-class command ships lack.   Though none of the Commonwealth naval shipyards have the capacity to build such a ship, expansion efforts are under way, and the Luzerne will undoubtedly fill the role of fleet flagship until something even larger and more capable is constructed.

Notes: Although the Kormoran isn't capable of putting out the sheer weight of missile fire as a Javelin DDG or even a Maxim MB(firing a 30-missile opening salvo as opposed to a Javelin's 50 or a Maxim's 36), it is the only ComForce missile platform equipped with launchers capable of firing the M12A1 Starsword capital missile.   In the words of ComForce's ranking officer, Admiral Konrad Donath, anything hit by a Starsword “will know it's been kissed”.   Its 10 standard missile launchers give it a much better ability to carry on a sustained long-ranged missile engagement than its smaller counterparts.

Note: A generalist design, the Hector carries a mix of armament that gives them the ability to carry on an engagement against a variety of targets at different ranges, though its relatively light missile armament means that she'll likely have to close the range before being able to inflict significant damage on a target.   (A Hector will likely have to operate at least in tandem with a missile platform or escort ship for best results.  )

Notes: Something of an oddball design, the Kuan Ti was designed to take advantage of the TKMS-Neptun Werft shipyard's single 12,000 ton slipway.   (With that yard's urgent expansion in order to build the Luzerne-class command cruiser, Kuan Ti could very well end up being the only ship of its class, at least for some time.   Slower than the fleet's other destroyer classes but more heavily armed and armored, she'll likely be used in a primarily defensive/garrison role in the Sol system.

Notes: The main command ship of the Commonwealth fleet until a Luzerne-class ship can be built, the Doneval is quick, heavily armored and well defended, but lacks much in the way of an offensive punch; 12 capital missiles in box launchers are backed up by a trio of 100mm railguns, which will likely be used as much defensively as offensively.   It does, however, boast an impressive package of active and passive sensors which should prove useful to a fleet on the move within potentially hostile territory.

Notes: The Javelin-class proved both larger and slower than the specifications laid out for a DDG design in the Commonwealth's New Fleet Initiative of 2052.   Furthermore, its anti-missile defenses are light for a ship of its size.   However, ComForce was persuaded that its heavy missile battery and the way the ships would be used (staying at range of an enemy and providing a fleet with fire support from a distance) would negate these disadvantages.   The Javelin, more than any other ship in the fleet besides perhaps the Maxim, exemplifies the current ComForce missile combat doctrine of firing a single massive salvo at the outset of an engagement and hoping it sufficiently saturates and/or damages an enemy's defenses to make it susceptible to the much lighter subsequent salvoes, as well as missile attacks from accompanying ComForce ships.

Notes: Though it mounts a high-speed laser turret and a trio of railguns that can target enemy ships as well as missiles, the Pegasus is first and foremost a defensive vessel, as indicated by its heavy anti-missile battery.   It is the fastest of any current ComForce destroyer design, a necessity for an escort design, as this allows the Pegasus to maneuver into an optimal defensive position even while a fleet is under way.

Notes: The Commonwealth New Fleet Initiative of 2052 specified the design and commissioning of several classes of destroyer, ranging in displacement from 8000 to 12000 tons and capable of a speed no less than 3000 km/s.   The Challenger was the first of these designs to be completed, and of all the resulting designs, the most generalist of any of them.   The finished design actually ended up outperforming many of ComForce's requirements, with a maximum speed of 300 km/s higher than the listed requirements.   Though equipped with the long-range M5A2 light anti-ship missile, its primary armament is the 150mm railgun mounted on its centerline.

Notes: The counterpart to the Beacon-class early warning craft.   Whereas Beacon captains are prohibited from leaving secured systems, the Hornet is actually designed to operate outside Commonwealth space.   It is equipped with the best passive sensors currently available to ComForce, and while not as fast as the Beacons, is fast enough with a low enough sensor signature that it should be able to evade contact with enemy ships long enough to withdraw to friendly space – provided that it spots the enemy quickly enough.

Notes: Although its salvo size is relatively light compared to other attack craft classes(any combat ship massing between 1 and 4 kT is labeled an attack craft), the use of reduced size launchers instead of box launchers in the Claymore means it can actually maintain a missile engagement beyond the initial exchange of fire if necessary, unlike the Maxim and Shrike-classes.   Anything that survives that missile engagement long enough to close the range will have to contend with the Claymore's 120mm railgun.

Notes: With only so much room available on an attack craft, the other AC classes have sacrificed things like sensor capability in order to mount as much firepower as possible.   To make up for this lack, the Narwhal class was designed to augment a patrol group with long-ranged sensor capability, although its lack of any kind of armament means that patrol group commanders will have to take special care to safeguard their Narwhal in any sustained engagement.

Looking at the commercial auxiliaries, I noticed that they all have only one layer of armor. This suggests to me that you don't expect them to be shot at, and maybe that's a good assumption. But the Planitia-class Construction Ship has CIWS on it, which suggests otherwise. Neither choice is wrong, but I'm getting mixed messages from the designs.

I do think you'll regret putting just one layer of armor on your fleet auxiliaries. These are your exploratory craft, so if anything is going to blunder into trouble, they will. Also, if the Tasman is meant as a survey craft leader, you could afford to drop the jump drives from the surveyors themselves. That'll free up some space for more armor or sensors.

The Magnolia-class Tankers lack jump drives, so they can't "move to a newly discovered system" until you get jump gates up, which will take about a year if you want to traverse the gate both ways.

None of your commercial auxiliaries (except the Dalsland, which isn't technically commercial) need more than 3 months of intended deployment, but maybe that's a role playing choice on your part.

The Dalsland has one year of intended deployment, five years of maintenance supplies, and two months of fuel. For the role of rating around science teams, you may want a longer intended deployment. Also, the ship has 56 MSP and a max repair cost of 82.5 MSP, so an unlucky roll of the dice could take out a courier quite easily. The Beacon, the Claymore, the Shrike, the Apache, and the Narwhal have the same issue, though the smaller ships with short deployments might get away with it.

The ISS is neat. It made me smile.

Many of your ships have CIWS, despite being described in one way or another as intended for fleet action or escort missions. CIWS only protects the ship it's mounted on, while point defense lasers (or meson cannons or Gauss cannons) will protect other nearby ships, too.

The Luzerne's quad laser turret seems odd. It doesn't outrange he defensive laser turrets, nor does it deal more damage per laser. I would lean toward removing the quad turret and using that tonnage to up the defensive turrets to twin gun mounts.

The Claymore's rate of fire is eight missiles every three minutes. I think the Maxim will outshine it in any given encounter.

In general, putting anti-ship missiles and anti-ship beam weapons on the same ship is a suboptimal choice, but if you want to play with generalist ships like that then you might find the challenge fun.

None of your warships has a jump drive, and the largest jump capable ship you have (the Tasman) is too small to escort your larger combatants through a jump point. This looks like an RP choice, judging by your descriptions, but it means you'll be unable to wage war all that well outside of your jump gate network. That's a lot of pressure to place on one thin-skinned construction ship.

Yeah, I did get a little CIWS-happy.   I do realize they only protect the ship they're on, which is why all the warships mount anti-missile batteries as well(though, I admit that it was a fairly recent discovery, and I was close to posting a DDE design with 4 CIWS emplacements before I realized my mistake and altered the design.  ) The reason they're so common is I'm not sure how reliable my first-generation AMMs are going to be, so I figured CIWS emplacements would help me hedge my bets.   You mentioned point defense later in your post - I imagine as time and technology progress, the Commonwealth will start building more laser-heavy designs, especially as ships get bigger.   (While 12kT might be called a heavy destroyer in 2057, for example, I'd envisioned tonnage ranges for different classes slowly creeping upwards over the years.  )

Good point about the Magnolias.   I was hoping not to need to design a jump drive for a ship that big, since it really eats into tonnage and I'm trying to keep my ships as small as reasonably possible in the early game.   I could always have a jump ship escort them along, but my starting fleet isn't exactly flush with jump-capable ships - and the ones I have will be off doing other things.   I've gone ahead and redesigned the class with a commercial jump drive.

Deployment time on the commercial auxiliaries - no, that wasn't an RP choice.   I just wasn't sure how long some of them would end up being deployed for the missions they're designed to carry out, and I wanted to err on the side of caution(not to mention 'expansion-proof' them a bit, in case I'm still using the same designs after expanding into a few outside systems.  ) But if it's redundant, I can certainly do other things with the extra tonnage.   Maybe replace the extra quarters with additional fuel storage; after all, if they don't have the fuel to operate long-term, the extra deployment time is moot anyway.

As far as the smaller ships go, I ran into the problem of having only so much tonnage to work with, especially with the LACs.   Their main defense was intended to be their speed; my hope was that they'd be fast enough to avoid taking hits, and being as small and lightly-armored as they are, I didn't expect them to be able to take more than a few hits anyway.

Glad you got a kick out of the ISS.   I thought it would be a fun little touch.

I'd envisioned the quad laser turrets on the Luzerne and Kuan-Ti as more of a close-range 'crunch' weapon.   That's why their tracking speed is so low compared to the defensive turrets; I had envisioned them being more of a FAC-killer/anti-ship weapon.   Mixing missile and beam armaments might not be optimal from a game standpoint, but I like them from a role-play perspective.   (Though depending on how things play out in the game, I might replace them with more specialized designs if they prove to be too disadvantageous.  ) EDIT: As I research larger focal sizes, I'll probably keep the smaller lasers as defensive weapons, while using the largest one I have as the anti-ship weapons.

I agree, the Maxim is a much better design in terms of combat power.   But they're designed for different roles, too.   The Maxim was specifically designed to take on bigger ships, while I'd envisioned the Claymore as being more of a LAC-killer, engaging capital ships as only a last resort(I don't know how much of a call there will be for that role, though, so I'm betting I'll be building a heck of a lot more Maxims than Claymores.  )

As you say, the scarcity of jump drives is partially an RP choice.   It's also partly because jump drives eat so much tonnage that, on a warship, I would rather see going to weapons and defenses.   Besides, from what I've read of other people's experiences, I hadn't envisioned needing to go on a full-on offensive within the first twenty years or so at least, by which time the first generation of warships would be obsolete anyway.   (Also, I had planned on waiting until I'd researched larger squadron sizes so I wouldn't need as many jump ships.  ) As for jump gates - Planitia won't be the only ship of her class.   I'd envisioned building at least four or five more within the first ten years of the game or so.   Nevertheless, I'm sure I'll have to start building jump engines into warships at some point - maybe as part of a leader/command design.

Jump squadron size is your best friend at your current tech level.  MJS6 means 1 jump ship and 5 followers, much better than 1\4 or worse 1\3.  Getting that up will help you out a lot.

Personal opinion - Putting beams on missile combatants is foolish.  Putting a touch of missiles with a small FC on beam combatants to add some extra punch is a good idea.  A few reduced size launchers and a small magazine doesnt take much space, and a Res 100 FC has pretty good range even at small size.  If nothing else, the missiles can help eat armor before you enter beam range, and thicken a salvo if you have to contest a JP entry.

Beams in the early game are so short ranged that for me the primary use is fighters\FACs, and Final PD coverage.  They do pretty good at point blank range, such as the mentioned JP assault, and against fighters, but for everything else, the missile ships are the early game generalists.

Commercial ships do suffer morale penalties for long deployments, but the only civilian systems that are affected by morale penalties are geological survey sensors, which you've moved to military class ships, so you won't see any consequences for keeping them away from port indefinitely.

The quad lasers will work against FACs if they close to beam range, but the point defense turrets will hit them, too. Looking back, the Luzerne has three defensive turrets, but with only one high speed fire control, they can only target one missile salvo or beam FAC per time increment. Two, if you use the other fire control as well. If all three turrets are going to be linked to one fire control you might as well combine them into one turret to take advantage of the multi-mount tonnage discount. Or add more beam fire controls if you want to split up the fire among more targets.

NihilRex- Yeah, jump squadron size is definitely one of my research priorities.  I've got my best power/propulsion scientist working on the next level of it right now.

Well, of the designs that I would consider pure missile combatants(the Javelin, Kormoran, and Maxim) only the Javelin has any armament that isn't a missile launcher, and that's limited to a single 10cm railgun, which admittedly does seem kind of superfluous now.  I have a feeling that any subsequent designs will lean a little more heavily on missiles, at least until I can do some serious research into improved beams.  Luckily I have a couple pretty good energy weapons researchers, so hopefully that shouldn't take too long.

Prince of Space- Yeah, I was wondering that about fire control.  I was hoping it would work more like Starfire's multiplex tracking, but I guess not.  That'll make beam defense a bit trickier then.  I think for future designs I might try to work in multiple high-speed fire controls and/or upgrade to twin turrets instead of singles.  (Or even triples/quads, but for some irrational reason I like the idea of triple/quad turrets being used as anti-ship weapons. )

Aurora fire controls function very differently than Starfire Multiplex systems.  You may assign any number of weapons to a single fire control, but that fire control can only be assigned one target per game cycle.

The size-1 passive sensors are basically pointless.  The only ships they'll reliably detect are cargo ships and jump-gate constructors.  Remember the detection range listed for the sensors is for a strength 1000 signature.  That's a huge ship.  And if you do find a warship, you're probably screwed anyways because you're only spotting at 48 million km away and its probably too late.

It's better than being blind. Besides, it's just one HS, so it's not like it's a huge waste.
