Despite what the title says, this isn't actually a design history per se.  I just wanted to make the Freidman reference.
I've finally decided to share the fleet from one of my Empire games, which I've referenced several times.  The ships here come from iteration 4, in 6.4.  Each one is sort of a rebuild of the previous one, improving the ships slightly.
I'll start with battleships:
Missouri-class Battleship:
The Missouri-class is the standard heavy battleship, and tied with the Enterprise-class heavy carrier and the Montana-class heavy battleship for the largest warship in service.  While it's very big and very expensive, it's also very effective, both at close range and at long.

Montana-class Battleship:
The Montana-class is the jump counterpart of the Missouri-class.  It's designed to lead a squadron of 4 Missouris, and to be lethal at beam ranges.  It also has flag facilities, as it's the best-protected ship in the fleet.

If the Montana and South Dakota are supposed to be the jump counterparts, then why do the Missouri and Washington need jump drives? Is it just redundancy in case the jump ships are lost? If so, why designate any battleships as jump counterparts? They could all just jump under their own power, or in 3-ship ad hoc squadrons after a battle if some had their jump drives destroyed.

Partially it's just design standards.  All of my full warships have jump drives.  (The tech is good enough that's it's a fairly minor penalty.)  The big difference between the jump ships and the others is the radius.  I'd rather not take a ship with a 50k radius through a tactical jump.

Have you actually used them for tactical jumps?  As  I recall, there are issues with multiple jump drives being in the same task group for squadron jumps.

Have you actually used them for tactical jumps?  As  I recall, there are issues with multiple jump drives being in the same task group for squadron jumps.
I just tested it, and it worked fine.  Remember that the squadron is too big for the standard BBs to carry with their jump drives.

I'm just going to post my 'standard' destroyer first, then the rest in alphabetical order.  I'm only including fleet destroyers at the moment.  DEs, frigates, and scouts will have to wait.  Also, some ships may not have their missile loads yet.

Fletcher-class Destroyer:
The Fletcher is my standard DD, designed to do everything fairly well, from screening the fleet to independent operations.  It's probably gone through more design iterations than any of my other designs, as it's where I usually try new ideas first.

Enterprise-class Heavy Carrier:
