Ships of the United Nations of Earth
« on: July 15, 2012, 03:39:46 PM »
It is 2120, the turmoil in the wake of Brian Legacy's assassination has subsided, for the first time in decades, the united nations of earth may propose a system for a working world government. President-Elect Davos Eglamore is uncertain about the next steps he will take as the presumptive head of this foundling race called "Humanity"

Within the last decade, intermittent contact has been established with the Gliesen Commune, a race of insectoid philosophers on a remote world at the edge of surveyed space. They have told contactees of another, far more powerful race, the Sculptor. There is also veiled talk of "precursors", powerful semisentient robots  hostile to all nonmechanical life, and even darker rumors about things that lurk in the void between the stars.

Eglamore knows that a powerful space navy will be necessary to keep the peace between the colonies of the United Nations, and to defend his people against threats in the wider galaxy. This is his proposal.

Hard Rules:
- Ships must be under 20,000 tons. This is the largest feasible size the UN can support at this point.
- Ships must have a range of 150 days. This distance allows for the safe policing of UN space and forward operations 100 days from the frontier.
- In this campaign, faster than light communication is expensive and inefficient, it takes time. The fleets will need to be organized such that they can operate independently to protect the five primary systems of the UN
- the fleet must be constructed such that it can operate for at least 4 decades with minimal upgrades and maintenance (I hate having to go through this planning stage often.)
- Must be constructable in a five year window, before 2025.

Notes:
- no alien race yet discovered has particularly good missile protection systems
- some design flaws are things I enjoy RPing. I am well aware of the disadvantages offered by large missiles, I just think it's fun to order cruise-missile type strikes.

Organization: 5 starfleets: Alpha, Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon.
Starfleets alpha, beta, gamma and delta will have
- 1 strike group (2 corvettes, 4 frigates, 1 battle-cruiser), which will generally be the first group in and the last group out
- 1 destroyer group (2 corvettes, 4 destroyers, 1 battle-cruiser) which will usually follow close behind the strike group and support it with missile fire
- 1 cruiser group (2 cruiser-escorts, 1 war-cruiser) which can join the destroyer group or operate independently,
- 1 carrier group  (2 corvettes, 1 carrier with a compliment of 4 interceptors, 4 bombers, 2 missile boats, and 2 AWACS)
- 1 scout group (1 survey-cruiser, with a compliment of 2 scout ships attached)

Starfleet epsilon will have
- 1 cruiser group (2 cruiser-escorts, 1 war cruiser)
- 1 strike carrier group (2 cruiser-escorts, 1 strike carrier with a compliment of 4 interceptors, 4 bombers, 2 missile boats, 2 Gunships, and 2 AWACs)
- 1 scout group (1 survey-cruiser, with a compliment of 2 scout ships attached)

Sao Paulo class Missile Destroyer
The Sao Paulo missile destroyer is designed for short-ranged support of the strike fleet. It is armed with Hitoshika class missiles for short range combat with high-speed targets, as well as longer-ranged exocets for more conventional missile combat. The Sao Paulo is not designed for independent operations, nor is it particularly well equipped to take damage capitol ships. It is also a platform for the powerful PULSE tactical scanner, capable of tracking missiles over 10 million kilometers away.

Monarch class Battlecruiser
Designed with versatility in mind, the Monarch supports a wide range of weapons, and can fill a number of combat roles, usually, it is the lead ship in destroyer and frigate fleets, which comprise the primary assault system of the UN navy. It is also responsible for transporting those ships through jump points. (note the design here does not display the Monarch's armaments, which are similar to the destroyer above, Hitoshika heatseeking antifighter missiles, as well as long range exocets.

Statesman class War Cruiser
the statesman will be the largest and most advanced craft in the UN Navy. It is designed primarily for anti-capital ship operations, and should ideally provide the largest threat-zone possible. The Statesmen is designed with the capability to strike any point in an inner-system theater, and runs weapons capable of significant damage to PDC's as well as planetary populations. The Statesmen supports two highly experimental systems, the "Overlord" long range scanning suite, which uses a complex meson/neutrino spin fluctuation analysis program to detect ships over a billion kilometers away, and the "assyrian" class long-range missile platform, which allows the Statesman to project missile fire over 200 million kilometers. The statesman has the secondary role of housing the command staff of a particular starfleet.

I'll stop there for now so you can tear holes in my designs. But be aware of the stuff you're not seeing:
- my AWACs and Missile boats, which both sport a longer range res 1 scanner, for advanced missile detection
- my bombers, which have an incredibly short ranged, very fast, very powerful, very large "fusion bomb" missile
- my survey cruiser and its scouts, which have very powerful passive surveillance capabilities.

I guess I don't understand how shields work. I'm doing the math on my capitol ship shields...are they worth it?

2 points of shields? No. 15-20 points? Yes.

Shields reduce incoming damage by their rating. So a 9 point warhead hitting 2 pt shields is dropped to 7 points onto the armor. The -300 bit means it will take 300 seconds to regenerate the 2 points of shields.

hmmmmmm...well, I guess they only take up 50 tons of space...still, I imagine there's lots of other things I need.

What else is this fleet lacking?

The Monarch doesn't have any missiles. And from personal preference, I'd put only one type of missile per class. But as I said, that's a personal preference thing.

yeah that one I knew, it's noted above, it has almost the same loadout as the missile destroyer.

there seems to be a significant logistical advantage in having one or two weapons systems only, per ship. However, I felt like, with this game, I should get carried away with systems and subsystems and contingencies. Too many games force me to create "Plasma Cannons and engines" class destroyers, or "Size 12 missile tube missile cruisers".

I basically have a "hitoshika"(Heatseeker) missile, which does not actually seek heat, but is good for fast stuff really close up...basically an antiFAC attack system. the exocets are more conventional, for breaking the back of a direct large-ship assault. This variety, as well as the even more variety on the Statesman (with it's tiny array of planet destroying warheads) is mostly just for style.

my biggest concern is that there aren't enough missiles in this fleet, it just seems like it's going to be a hassle to reload these guys every mission. But I really can't fit anything anywhere.

Colliers. And Tankers. And Supply ships. Just keep them on the friendly side of the JP during operations.

I need to figure out how that stuff works, so I can transfer fuel and missiles with a few clicks. I'm also not sure how to refuel and rearm parasites, which seems to be essential, given my antipumpkin strategy of sustained bombing runs.

if ships are marked as tankers/supply ships/colliers there will be relevant contextual options from the f12 menu. pick the taskforce you want to rearm/refuel/resupply, check the taskforces box, click on the supply taskforce, and say refuel/rearm/resupply from said ships.

fighters and FACs are refueled/rearmed/resupplied automatically, and that might extend to repairs as well, I'm not sure.
