Worst Notices on Jumping into a new system
« on: September 03, 2011, 12:03:41 AM »
For me, just got "Strength 3 Nuclear Detonation x48 detected!"

Time to pull back the surveyors and send in a battle squadron.

What comes under the heading of "additional suckage" is I just redesigned the ships of my battle fleet for upgrades. In the midst of retooling shipyards. So the ships I'm sending are now a generation behind.

Someone certainly is getting the tar beat out of them.

48 Str 3 explosions.
63 Str 1 explosions and 54 Str 4 explosions. Plus a secondary power explosion. New wreck.
63 Str 1 explosions.
63 Str 1 explosions. 2 new wrecks.
2 secondary magazine explosions. New wreck.
11 Str 1 explosions.
And a new wreck.

I do think my 6 ship destroyer squadron is buggered. The opfor is the swarm, and they took out 6 14,000 ton ships. My destroyers weigh in at 6500 tons. Not going to be pretty.

The aftermath.

Bad guys had 80 800 ton FACs. Plus 4 speed 1000 unknown size ships, and 1 4000 speed ship with a honkin' big ass scanner.

They lost 10 FACs (yay me!) to me losing 6 destroyers.

Time to dust off the cruiser/battlecruiser designs and start gearing up.

Swarm fighters are a nuisance to clear out if they have a good speed advantage.  :(

Edit: So far my worst is transiting to find I'm in a black hole without noticing right away. The severe speed loss drained my grav survey ships fuel leaving them to struggle against the inevitable, since no fast enough ship with a lot of spare fuel was available. Not really a notice but still was news to me once I got the low fuel warning.

It was 80 on 6. I felt glad I was able to take out 10 of them. I'm building a larger fleet to scour them from that system. But it will be a while.

voknaar, even worse is when your survey ships are already too slow when they transit in. My first black hole was a Class V. Lost three survey vessels there.

Better than my first battle. We did only armour damage to 1 of the FACs, and it was only 20 on 4. And of course, they went after my sensor/jump ship first.

I had an epic series of battles against them as my first contact.   Actual first contact was a hapless survey ship getting blown up 2 jumps from Sol about 5 years after a Newtonian start.

In response I sent a squadron of six destroyers, my most powerful (and only) type of warship, armed with one main laser cannon and two twin smaller laser turrets for.   Attempted a stealth run, but around 40 of the fighters closed in before I even knew what hit me.   Untrained crews didn't get off a single shot.

Next battle a few years later I brought a mixed fleet of about 20 ships and 5 different designs, including a few prototypes and ships specifically designed for anti-fighter roles.   This time we came in hot, though by now the fighters numbered around 100, making me kind of go oh crap.   I brought two missile cruisers, but after expending all the ammo I brought we destroyed four and damaged four more. . .   I panicked and headed back for the jump point.   They caught up and took out my Gen-1 ships, but amazingly my PD turrets took them all out with the loss of only 7 ships total.   It was then easy to mop up the rest of the system, including using the big guns to outrange the slower, but bigger enemies.

In other words, I have hit Swarm concentrations in TWO locations within 7 jumps of Sol. One is right next door!

My tirst meeting with those. . things caught me by surprise my battle\scout sqaudron (none with jum engines : i usesd a jump gate) met about 40 meson armed buggers.  That resulted in my 6 ships being trapped and spammed too death, though all of the hostiles were leaking fluid by the end thanks too my 4 pd destroyers.
