I tried it.  I have about ten hours or so on it.  I liked it, but it has a steep learning curve and I couldn't bull my way through.  I'll probably go back at some point. 

It's not a casual game, which is why I stalled out.  Like Aurora, you need to invest time and effort into it to make it worth while.

Played it a while back, its solid, and has some replay value because of the different ways you can run your force and some tech choices.

I got about 30ish hours out of it over about 4-5 playthroughs.

I bought it when it first came out.
Its mishmash of various 4x games.
The Campaign map plays like a XCOM, with pauseable realtime gameplay.  When you go into a battle, it plays exactly like MoO2, in the same turn-based style of game.  With shield arcs and missiles taking several turns to make it across the screen before hitting the targets. 
There is a research tree akin to Civilization.  you start off with Corvetters and destroyers, then eventually unlock battleships and dreadnaughts, which replace the former.
There is also a officer management system giving bonuses to attributes on ships. 
Its a good game, but only has a single player campaign, with the same campaign map (Solar system). 
I wouldn't call it a 4X game.  I'd call it a XCOM game.

Something to note is that the campaign’s difficulty peaks midgame - once the aliens are on the back foot, they have no way to recover and you can coast all the way to the final mission.

Save before that, because when I played this, it was hilariously overtuned and impossible to beat without trying over and over again with a lot of fleet buildup that was otherwise unnecessary.

I tried the demo and it certainly is interesting.

It is currently a steal in Steam: only £4

I loved the concept and a lot of the implementation, but thought it failed badly on balance and variety. I wish someone would make exactly the same game with more work put into weapons at each tech level, making things like carriers practical, etc.

I particularly liked how the council funding worked; you often end up in a position where you could assign your good ships to your best captains... or you could give them to suboptimal captains from the richest countries and get a budget increase next month. It made for interesting choices.

Replayability is very low in the end; You spend your time developing the same techs in the same order and you know what to expect.

This seems to be the same problem that the XCOM games had for me. Especially XCOM 2 which is more story driven and focuses less on being a planetary defense network and more on being guerillas.

Although xenonaughts also runs into the same problems it is much more immersive with regards to being an actual defense network - it does especially well with having actual tactical air combat. Oh and multiple bases like the classic XCOM games. Whereas I never bothered to replay the modern XCOMs I do occasionally (albeit infrequently) return to xenonaughts.
