Polish commonwealth - part 2
« on: July 28, 2012, 09:06:31 PM »
1st January 2020

It have been ten years since the initial work on Tran-Newtonian industrialisation begun. Quite a lot have been accomplished in that time. Mars have been colonised by two powers, with a total population of nearly five million. Five nations are engaged in interplanetary travel, and there are even dedicated warships. Perhaps most importantly, there are privately owned vessels flying flags of the Alliance and the Commonwealth. All of the powers are arming themselves with new, more deadly types of weaponry that made tanks obsolete.

There are however also serious problems. Terraforming of Mars should be possible, but the two current nations having colonies there are unwilling to pay the bill for the entire process. If they do terraform the planet on their own, then the other four powers could just colonise Mars without paying the bills. Negotiations are ongoing, but so far they are proceeding nowhere.

And whispers can be heard about new, revolutionary theory that may enable humanity to reach the stars. Serious physicists aren't going forward with this yet, because everyone knows that that would violate casualty. Some fringe scientists have published and even tried to get funding, but the amount of resources needed to confirm – or reject – the theory is staggering. And so, for now at least, the theory remains only a whisper.

6th April 2020

The Confederation lays down it's first survey ship in a newly constructed naval shipyard. They should also have commercial yard late next year.

13th August 2020

Russia develops it's first warship, a Kirov class frigate. While their missiles are much larger to those intelligence believes the Commonwealth is using, they should also be much longer ranged and – possibly – more devastating. Retooling begun at their naval yard.

28th September 2020

Russia is the third nation to complete transition from conventional to Trans-Newtonian industry.

17th October 2020

Asian Federation completes transition to TN industry.

4th January 2021

With Japan completing it's industrial transition, only Alliance still have conventional industry.

22nd February 2021

Pierwszy Dywizja Rakietowa (First Missile Division) comprising all three Commonwealth corvettes begins a series of training exercises. Alliance and Russia officially protest this, claiming it to be a show of force. Which is exactly why up to this point such an exercises were not conducted. However, the Commonwealth intelligence is now pretty confident that the Alliance have missile-armed planetary fortresses and there is some suspicion that Russia is developing it's own naval force. Which is why an expansion of Polish armed forces is needed. And so, aside from the training, three more ships have been laid down.

1st March 2021

With the completion of Solar System geological survey, Alliance ships Ruby and Amethyst have been scrapped.

13th July 2021

The Asian Federation establishes colony on Mars. By that time the there are four point three million Commonwealth and nearly five million Alliance citizens living there.

29th October 2021

The Confederation completes it's first commercial yard, allowing them to finally enter the space race in earnest. While this is played for all it's worth in media, in reality the various governments are very worried.

The Confederation have only one real enemy: Russia. Sitting just across the Suez Channel, it have been known for some time that the Empire have it's eyes on Africa. However, the northern Islamic states, have been heavily militarised and the Commonwealth was making sure everyone knows they won't be happy with Russian expansion in that direction.

But the old military was becoming less and less relevant, and the Confederation had no nuclear capability. Worse yet, according to their intelligence, the Empire could train at least two times as much troops at once as the Confederation, and it was almost certain they were building their own space navy. Being so far behind in the technological research – their scientific establishment was two times smaller than the second smallest, belonging to Asian Federation and it was only a quarter size of the Commonwealth – they couldn't possibly defend themselves if the Empire attacked in force.

A Nigerian general Kojo proposed building nuclear shelters for their troops. He argued, that wars aren't fought for fun, but for gain – territory, workforce, industry – and that if there is no way to gain something cheaply, the war may be averted. Right now the troops can be taken down by surgical – as far as nuclear weapons went – strikes, but with a series of shelters, the number of WMDs necessary to achieve that would devastate the Confederation making it no prize at all.

There is some opposition to this. First, if the general is wrong, building such shelter would result in unnecessary civilian casualties due to much bigger bombardment. Second, they are already far behind other powers in terms of technology and space exploration, and building those shelters will require using a very valuable industry. Not only that, but unless the speed of training ground troops is increased, a massed attack would still overwhelm them.

In the end however, the governments gives the go ahead, as this is the only plan they have.

This design is classed as a Planetary Defence Centre and can be pre-fabricated in 5 sections

17th January 2022

Three more of the Poznan class corvettes are completed, forming Druga Dywizja Rakietowa (Second Missile Division). Three more of those ships are planned.

9th March 2022

The Alliance completes three of their PDCs, one in continental USA, near Washington, one in Australia and one in France, near Commonwealth boarder. For now, no more are planned.

11th March 2022

After years of negotiations a sort of agreement have beenb reached regarding terraformation of Mars. Any nation that have made a colony is required to build ten terraforming installation in no more than ten years since the establishment of the colony. If a nation did not construct a colony on Mars before the terraforming was complete, they will be banned from colonisation of the planet, regardless of Stockholm Agreement.

The Atlantic Alliance begun construction almost immediately after that, albeit slowly. The Commonwealth and the Federation will likely begin construction soon.

16th March 2022

The Alliance have completed a series of nuclear pulse drives. A modification to the existing freighter and a colony ship designs based on that drive have been completed.

17th June 2022

The Confederation have completed their work on Fast Attack Craft engine. The engine is carefully tuned to increase it's power, albeit at a cost of increased fuel consumption. They manage to trade the technology to the Commonwealth in exchange for improvements to mining facilities and to the Alliance for pebble bed reactor technology. Both powers however, demand that their technologies be traded to no one else. Since loosing confidence of those two nations would seriously hurt Confederation's trading opportunities, they do intend to comply.

9th February 2023

The first three terraforming installations, belonging to the Alliance, begin pumping oxygen to the Martian atmosphere.

2nd July 2023

The Alliance finally completes it's transition to TN industry.

5th October 2023

The Commonwealth develops a series of nuclear pulse drives and designs upgrades for their freighters, colony ships and warships.

19th December 2023

The first Federation terraforming installation begin it's work on Mars.

2nd May 2024

The Alliance develops new, improved missile dubbed Stinger-B. Faster, more manoeuvrable and with heavier warhead – but identical range – that is intended to replace the old Stingers.

22nd July 2024

Both the Alliance and the Federation complete their part of Martian Treaty. Twenty terraforming facilities now add oxygen to Mars and the pressure have already doubled. Even so it will be a long time before the planet is terraformed, and some are beginning to suggest, that maybe the number of facilities specified in the treaty should be doubled.

28th September 2024

Because Everyone Knows that faster-than-light travel is impossible, the jump point theory haven't been widely recognised and those studying it were usually very marginalised. But somehow, the theory have reached the Commonwealth King.

The King was more than just figurehead, with quite some powers, but the foundation of his ability to affect events lay in the public confidence and trust for the royal family. Because of that he couldn't just order the government to pursue the research. He could try to convince them however.

It took all his skill and calling up all his favours, but he manages to get the research rolling.

4th November 2024

The Commonwealth have developed new five thousand tonne warship. Having two times the firepower of Poznan class corvette and heavier armour the ship should be able to deal even with the Russian ships. Retooling begun at Gdansk Yard and, for now, three of those ships are planned.

8th January 2025

Russian Imperial family have been in power for a long time, and in that time there was no serious danger their rule. That made them somewhat detached from reality – to say the least. Each and everyone of them was slightly obsessed with leaving his mark on history. And when all was said and done conquerors were the ones remembered the best.

Of course “conquering” space would be an achievement on it's own, but the current Emperor wanted more. It was time to finally take down the Africa – and maybe even South America.

Early morning, the Russian forces crossed Suez Channel, while landing parties – both sea and airborne – landed all over the eastern African coast. The Emperor was confident in his troops, so no nuclear warheads were used.

The war hit international community like a thunderbolt. The Japan remained it's usual silent, but the Alliance, the Commonwealth and the Federation all condemned the invasion. The Poles begun negotiating with the other two democracies about entering the war.

13th January 2025

The Islamic forces guarding the Suez channel have been hit hard. Their pre-TN infantry suffered nearly fifty percent casualties and even their newer forces didn't escape unscathed. Fifty thousand civilians also died in the fire fight. While Russians also suffered casualties, they weren't nearly that bad.

19th January 2025

The Russians managed to break through the Suez fortifications and secure landing sites in three different places on African coast. For every Russian soldier killed, two enemies were taken down.

Meanwhile a serious rift is being developed in the Alliance. The structure of this organisation was murky, to say the least. In fact, the term “Alliance” referred to a series of agreements, from free trade, through free passage for civilians to a series of mutual defence treaties. This also meant that technically there was no “Alliance government”.

But, no nation could survive leaving the Alliance. Not even USA probably. That meant, that a consensus have always been reached. Sometimes very painfully. However, since the various governments were careful for all the internal politics to stay below public radar and to show unified front against other powers, the public always thought about Alliance as a sort of a successful, well organised pseudo-state.

Not any more.

The first fissure become the Turkey and the Scandinavian states. They had boarders with Russia and they had better grasp then more regarding the Imperial brutality – and danger it possessed. The Turkish, Swedish and Finnish politicians and civilians demanded immediate action.

Then some of the European powers – primary France and Italy – proposed deceiving the Commonwealth. To secretly tell them that the Alliance will go to their side, but in reality they would sit back, watching the Commonwealth and the Russian to go down in flame. For them the Poles were the enemy, as bad, if not worse, than the Empire.

The Turkey not only didn't take kindly to that – they went public about it.

More followed of course. The USA government have seen the war as “not their problem” but opposition and many of the US citizens begun asking a very uncomfortable question: what if the Russia succeeds and takes over Mexico, effectively establishing boarder with the America? The Australia and New Zealand wished to join the anti-Russian alliance and enter the war. The Great Britain and Spain proposed accepting various Confederate states into the Alliance, increasing the strength of the organisation, while leaving the rest to their fates, pointing out that every nation leaving the Confederation and joining the Atlantics would effectively be out of the war.

The internal bickering quickly spilled into public domain and out of control. For all instances and purposes the Alliance become paralysed.

24th January 2025

In a desperate attempt at pushing the Empire back the Muslim throw themselves into the fight with ferocity and fanaticism, but to no avail. Two pre-TN infantry division suffer twenty two and thirty five percent casualties, respectively, while inflicting only three percent casualties on Russians. Similarly a Kenyan garrison battalion tried counter-attack on Russian beachhead, but they have been bogged down.

3rd February 2025

Russians keep pushing into northern Africa, securing almost all of Egypt and Libya. Three more pre-TN battalions tried to slow them down, taking heavy casualties, while inflicting almost negligible loses on the Imperial troops. The Kenyan beachhead is also expanding, although the Somalian one is at a stale-mate.

5th February 2025

The Commonwealth and the Federation reach a secret agreement. They will try to stop the Russians. The Alliance was left out, least they inform the Empire.

At twenty-two hundred hours the three Commonwealth divisions, nine ships in total, stationed above Luna fire at the Imperial warships, located on high Earth orbit, some three hundred seventy thousand kilometres distant. The ships don't try to coordinate fire; each is give a target and is expected to fire as fast as possible.

It took the ships some time to begin firing. Because of the critical importance of those Imperial warships, the space battle will be fought before ground one – without official declaration of war. The Russian crews are stunned when they detect the launch, scrambling to their battle stations and demanding orders from their government or admiralty. The Russian soldiers were always on a tight leash and now this may prove critical.

The following seconds, with the Polish salvoes already half a way through, the ships begin to target their enemies, albeit slowly. Each one is doing this individually, without orders and with some trepidation. But they are reacting to the threat.

A total of twenty eight – out of thirty six – missiles hit their targets. Few ships are streaming atmosphere, but they have taken no internal damage. Worse, the Russians managed to open fire.

The explosions provide an incredible show on the Earth’s surface, although this also have sent many governments into panic. The Alliance – despite being asked to join – never really thought that the Poles and Asians will have stomach for war, and the Japanese didn't even suspected that they may interfere.

Before the Russian missiles arrive, the Commonwealth ships manage to fire the second salvo.

The two missile waves arrive at their targets almost simultaneously. Polish ships Ryga and Wilno have taken substantial damage, the latter losing it's only fire control, their armour almost completely wiped out, and they fell out of formation. However, the Commonwealth was lucky. Only twelve missiles, out of thirty, actually connected. Even so, their warheads were far heavier.

The Russian fared little better. Two of their ships fell out of formation, with many missile launchers and fire controls destroyed. Those two ships were out of action.

Less then two minutes later the Commonwealth fired another salvo; the Russian were still reloading. It was becoming obvious that the Imperial launchers, which could be devastating if the Russian could choose the engagement range, were a serious handicap in a close fight like this one.

Literally seconds before the Polish missiles arrived, the Kirovs managed to fire another salvo. And then three of those ships have died.

The Commonwealth managed to get another salvo before Russian missiles arrived. But then they did and the Kiev have been hit hard, with secondary magazine explosion crippling the ship, taking out it's only fire control, and making it fall out of formation, huge holes streaming atmosphere and bodies. Seconds later, another two missiles hit the already battered Riga, making her dead in space – but still in one piece. Seconds later the Polish missiles arrived, taking down two more Kirovs. Only one more ship remained. A minute later, it too become a wreck.

And then it was over. The entire engagement lasted only eight minutes. Half of the Commonwealth Navy was crippled – but no ships have been destroyed. The Russian shipyards were now at their mercy. And as the King was now telling the Emperor, the Asian Federation and the Polish Commonwealth between them had much more pre-TN nuclear weapons that Russia – and they can be used. Sure, the Empire may be able to deal some damage with their own nuclear arsenal, but it will be obliterated in the process. To say nothing about how many troops the three powers – together with Confederation – can put out.

And so, the Emperor yielded.

6th February 2025

Some of the Alliance member launch a huge media campaign against the Commonwealth pointing their aggression without formal declaration of war. This only deepens division within the organisation

7th February 2025

A peace treaty was officially signed in the ruined Cairo. As war repatriations Russia will have to transfer twenty construction factories and mines as well as a hundred thousand credits to the Confederation and fifty construction factories and fifty mines to the Commonwealth. They will also have to share their military technologies with the three powers. Many commentators note, that this is far more than the Russia have destroyed and they agree that this is a ploy to weaken the Empire. Others note, that while certainly not insignificant, that amount of real estate isn't enough to really cripple the Russia.

The Asian Federation was only moderately happy with the treaty. They would prefer to take down the Empire, but in reality, that would bee too costly. The occupied Indian territories provided almost a third of the Russian population and any attempt to include them in peace treaty would result in nuclear conflict on Earth – a far too high price by Commonwealth standards. While this was all agreed upon before the fighting started, this still did not make the Indians happy.

Meanwhile the Confederation have a lot of reorganisation to do. Their military response to the invasion was hardly unified. In fact, the northern, Islamic nations accused the other Confederation states of leaving them to their fate. Which wasn't exactly untrue. While this was never said, many hoped to weaken the Islamic dictatorships.

But even so, more power will have to be given to the Confederation government, even if this meant weakening national ones.

17th March 2025

Russia approaches the Japanese with a long-term, secret cooperative pact to take down the Asian Federation. However, the latter are not interested. They see no need for military expansion, when the peaceful one into space will be more than enough to meet their needs – at least until the resources gets scarce.

27th August 2025

The Japanese research establishment is now the biggest one in the world, bigger even than that of the Commonwealth.

3rd October 2025

The Commonwealth ships have finally been repaired. The existing corvettes have been reorganised into one unit – Pierwsza Eskadra Korwet (First Corvette Squadron). Three of the Grunwald class frigates have been laid down, with delivery date of March 2027. At least six are planned.

16th March 2026

Since the war the previous year, various Alliance nations have been discussing transformation from a loose coalition of states to a true pseudo-state. And over last few months, this have been happening, with establishment of the Alliance parliament and Alliance Speaker – effectively a president. While their powers were somewhat limited, they were a start.

However, Finland, Sweden, Cyprus, Greece and Turkey were still very dissatisfied with the Alliance response to the Russian-Confederate war, especially with the attempt at deception by France and Italy. In this regard, they had much more in common with the Commonwealth than with the Alliance.

And now Alliance begun turning into international super-nation not unlike the Commonwealth itself. Which was why those five nations have decided to held a referendum. There were three options. Join the new Alliance, go alone or join the Commonwealth. In all five nation the third option won, but only with few percent majority.

The rest of the Alliance tried to either downplay it or portray those that left as war-hungry brutes, a treat to the stability of the Alliance that is best gone.

The Confederation have also been transforming itself into a sort of super-nation, but more slowly.

133 million people, 75 construction factories and mines, 1 research lab transferred from the Alliance to the Commonwealth on Earth. 1.53 million people and 358 infrastructure transferred on Mars.

19th May 2026

Fifty thousand Japanese colonists land on Mars. Only Russia and Confederation now lack colonies on the Red Planet.

19th January 2027

For years now the Confederation have been developing technologies no one else have seen as priority and then trading them to their advantage. This have played very well for them. Now they have to make a very important decision: should they develop jump point theory?

They were fairly certain no one else have been developing it. The idea was crazy after all. But the preliminary studies all checked out. If the theory is right, and if the Confederation develops the technology first, they would have a great bargaining chip.

Of course, if the theory is wrong, the damage would be enormous. So much resources and time lost – it could literally be a difference between Confederation being competitive and being shuffled into oblivion.

But in the end, this was their one shot at greatness – and it could not be resisted. Which was why they decided to go ahead and start the project.

25th January 2027

The Russian Empire establishes a colony on Mars.

2nd March 2027

The growth of Japanese scientific establishment have been enormous this past decade and it wouldn't be possible without massive influx of new blood. This made certain controversial theories much more easily accepted.

Which is how the Imperial government heard about the potential of Jump Points. While there were certainly other pressing matters, the Emperor gave go ahead for the research.

27th March 2027

The Martian population now exceeds fifty million, nearly half of which are Alliance citizens.

1st July 2027

The Commonwealth have completed their part of Martian Treaty. There are now thirty terrafroming installations on Mars, but the pressure is still only eight percent that of Earth. Moreover, as the work on jump point theory continues and it's more and more likely that the theory is correct, the Commonwealth government begins loosing interest in Mars.

11th July 2027

The Commonwealth completes their preliminary work on jump point theory, although they have yet to develop practical hardware. That leads to discussion about how to best proceed. One camp wants to develop sensors first and begin surveying the system, while a jump drive is being developed. The other camp wants to build a full scale jump-capable survey ship.

In the end, the deciding factor is shipyard availability. The Commonwealth have only one naval yard, which is currently building the Grunwald class frigates. Using two different designs means two retoolings, and two times more ships to be build. Because of this a jump-capable survey ship will be developed.

24th January 2028

The Japanese Empire have finished transporting ten terraforming installations to Mars. However, there are only one and a half million Imperial citizens on the planet, far too few to adequately man those facilities. With only one colony ship – for the time being – it will be some time before the colonisation of the Red Planet hits it's stride.

The sharing of the planet is giving various parties significant headaches. The Alliance in particular would love to speed up the terraforming effort by either building more installations or developing better terraforming techniques, but they are unwilling to foot the bill alone. Other nations on the other hand, in particular Confederation, Japan and Federation, are unwilling to put more resources into the process.

21st June 2028

The oxygen content in Martian atmosphere is high enough that humans could breathe it – if the atmosphere were thicker that is. Even so, it is still equal to oxygen partial pressure encountered on  Earth only four kilometres above the sea level and as such is not considered good enough – which is why the Martian treaty specified minimum oxygen partial pressure of point one five atmosphere.

22nd August 2027

The Confederation completes their research into jump point theory. While they don't yet have a working drive, they are considering trading the technology already.

The problem is that they need primarily civilian technologies, especially since the peace treaty after the war gave them all they needed to build missile armed combatants. They will almost certainly be a generation out of date, but considering all the problems the Confederation have that's a lot better than could be expected. Unfortunately, the only ones researching the civilian technologies are the Poles and they already traded a lot of what they knew to the Confederation.

The Confederation government – now heavily reformed after the events of the war, with mandate to create international policy – is split in two. One camp proposes approaching the Commonwealth with trade. The other camp points out, that if they do so, the Commonwealth will begin crash research leaving them behind very quickly. On the other hand, if they wait and present the Poles with a complete set of technologies they'll get a lot better bargain. Not only that, but the Confederation could be in the forefront of space exploration for a change. That second argument is potentially the most emotional one. Everyone is thinking about the Confeds as the laggers, the beggars, the ever overshadowed bastard child – even the citizens of Confederation think of themselves that way. Now they have a chance to do something as important as landing on the Moon or creating the first human colony on Mars. And that begins swaying the undecided.

The Confederation will pursue further research – in secret.

17th September 2027

The Commonwealth completes their construction of three more Grunwald class vessels, bringing the total number in that class to six. No more will be constructed. The Russia have been rebuilding their forces, but for now they just continue building the old Kirov class.

In addition, the Commonwealth population on Earth now exceeds one billion. Even so they are still the smallest power on the planet.

19th December 2027

The Russian Empire have completed their design of next-generation warship of eight thousand tonnes. Learning from their defeat during the brief war, they also designed new, smaller missiles and launchers with better reloading rates, of which the new class carries twelve, with enough reloads for twelve salvoes. However, they didn't have time to develop new engines, so their ships are relatively slow. Retooling begun at Odense Steel Yard.

9th February 2029

There is a growing rift in the Asian Federation. Since the brief Russian-Confederate war the India knew that the Russians could be defeated and so they pushed for a massive military build-up. Since they constituted half the Federation's population and nearly two-thirds of it's industry, they could make decisions by themselves – even if it wasn't always that easy, and even if they refrained from doing that in the past for political reasons.

But over four hundred million ethnic Indians were oppressed by the Empire, sometimes even gassed or shot during peaceful demonstrations. The Indian government wanted to end this, and they claimed, that if they can create military powerful enough, they may be able to make a deal to regain those four hundred million people. They will almost certainly have to offer Russia something – most likely ability to move the industry from the occupied parts to their territory and payments from the Federation – but that was something the Indians were willing to do.

However, other governments were convinced that Russians could not be reasoned with. For that matter, some believed, that the Indians themselves were lying, that they expected to fight. That they wanted that fight, to have their vengeance on the Empire for millions of deaths of their people.

But all of this was being discussed behind closed doors. Whether the Federation can survive this political storm and whether or not war will come – only time can tell.

For now the Federation begun retooling it's main naval yard for a new ship. Designed to fire twenty missile as fast as possible, their launchers had the best reload time achieved so far and their missiles were quite long-ranged. The pay-off was that their warheads were relatively light, but as the Commonwealth proven in the only space battle so far, that wasn't as big a problem as it may seem.

This will also be the biggest warship built so far.

23rd February 2029

The Confederation have developed a gravitational survey sensors and designed a survey ship. While the ship won't be able to explore those jump points, at least it will give them a head start. Retooling will take about half a year.

29th February 2029

The Confederation establishes colony on Mars, the last power to do so.

21st April 2029

The Japanese Empire completed work on jump point theory. They decide to develop jump-capable survey ship.

7th May 2029

The Alliance develops their first warship, a City class destroyer. Nine are planned. Three will be operated by USA and one each by UK, France, Italy, Spain, Denmark and Canada. However, all those ships will be part of one force and one military chain of command – one of the changes to the Alliance structure after the paralysis during the war.

Since the yard is still expanding, retooling for the class is not yet possible. As such, it will be some time before those ships enter service.

Meanwhile rumours of the jump point theory have reached the Alliance bureaucracy. However, the USA science advisor is retired professor of physics and he dismisses the idea. Trusting him, the US president pretty much shuts it down as well, so the Atlantics will allocate their research budget into new industrial technologies.
