Initial Setup and Background
« on: November 01, 2009, 07:51:04 AM »
This campaign is using as a starting off point the end of the Twin Moons campaign.  I had plans for that campaign, but the primary focus of the campaign had ended with the end of the war between the Strug and The Sister, and the version of Aurora that I was using had become outdated.  As I considered what campaign to start next, in the aftermath of the end of the Six Powers Campaign, I kept coming back to the Twin Moons Campaign.  I don’t like leaving things unfinished, and that was one of the campaigns that ended in mid-stride. Even better, the Strug had only recently begun expanding into other systems and had yet to establish a colony of any type in a different system.  This made recreating the Strug civilization relatively easy, especially as I kept the database and could easily bring up their information for transfer to a new 4.46 game.

The Old Campaign and transition notes:
For the purposes of this campaign, this campaign will be picking up the old just before the Strug began exploring the warp lines.  This is because I could recreate the Strug home system without too much trouble, but I have no reliable way of recreating the other systems that the Strug explored without spending an incredible amount of time generating and discarding new systems until I find a few that are similar to the ones generated in the old game.  As the Strug had no interstellar colonies, I decided that it wasn’t worth it and decided instead to roll the campaign back a few years.  Therefore, if you go the old Twin Moons posts, I am considering everything that happened after November, 920 to be an alternate world, if you will.  I will probably go in at some point and edit those posts to conform with the “new reality”.  I was originally hesitant to do that, but the changes are so minor I don’t think that it is a big deal.

Aurora does not allow the player to direct the generation of a system, due to the complex and interconnected nature of the system generation routines, therefore, I decided to settle for a system that was superficially like the Strug Home System from the old campaign.  My requirements were simple.  All I really needed were two terrestrial type worlds orbiting a gas giant, along with a fair number of other worlds and moons in the system.  I got these in fairly short order, modified their atmospheres using the SM Race, and then modified the mineral contents of the system’s various worlds and moons to more or less match that of the old campaign. Because Aurora has evolved a lot since the old Twin Moons campaign, I decided to alter some things to take advantage of Aurora’s new capabilities.  First, I decided to make the inhabitants of The Sister methane breathers, a fairly minor alteration, but one I thought was interesting.  A much larger issue involved bringing the ship designs across from the old game.  I thought about this for some time.  After all, Aurora had changed quite a bit since the old campaign.  For example, when I ran the Twin Moons campaign missile ranges in Aurora were on average less than 1 million kilometers, and usually a lot less than that.  In addition, the Twin Moons campaign used a version of Aurora from the time before Steve changed the Armor system, which meant that almost no one used armor at all.  Certainly the Strug didn’t use armor, in spite of the fact that they would have been natural armor users given their situation, with a deadly enemy already in weapons range at all times.  In the end, I decided to stick with the original designs as much as I could, modifying only the things that I needed to, like the original missile designs.  Therefore, all Strug designs will rely on shields rather than armor, a design choice that will continue until they have reason to change it.

The current situation:
As of the start of the new campaign, the Strug have conquered their neighbors on The Sister and are currently struggling with their attempts to save the Colonists from their own warlike folly, which has resulted in widespread radiation that is poisoning their world.  In addition, the Strug have established several mining outposts on other planets and moons of their system, and have established a bustling colony of 25 million on an inner planet with extensive mineral resources.  The total system population is 875 million.  The Strug have reached level 3 technology (8,000 RP’s in most cases) in the areas that interest them, mostly engine tech, economic techs, and missile techs. The Strug maintain a small army, mostly for occupation duties on the Sister, and a moderately large space force that is a legacy of their war with the Sister.   The Strug are very defensive minded, in spite of the fact that it was their offensive capabilities that won their war for them. This is due to the fact that the Strug tend to be peaceful cooperators by nature, although they are stubborn and will not tolerate any interference from other civilizations.

The Tartarus Montes class is the largest Strug warship built to date.  It is not actually considered a fully functional warship by the Strug, rather, it was built to act as more of a mobile missile base to confuse the Colonist’s strategic situation.  In the aftermath of the war with The Sister the Strug are considering scrapping the two units of this class that were built.

While a mothership design is a necessary component to give the gunboat fleets a power projection capability, the Strug have been unhappy with this design and its limited capacity.  Work is underway on increasing yard capacity so that a larger design can be constructed.
