Ships of the Terran Federation

The Federation operates many more vessels than the Empire, though its military is smaller, many of the designs were created by private citizens or small companies, leading to some unusual class names.
Habitats
The vast majority of the population lives in Rama class habitats, with one million people each, these are fully contained cities, and there are 190 of them currently in operation.

Freighters
The most popular freighter is the imaginatively titled "Biff" class... it was designed by Biff apparently. It is much slower than its Empire counterpart, but also smaller and cheaper.

Fuel Harvesters
The Flea class fuel harvester is the second largest vessel in space after the Rama, these have no engines and rely on tugs to move around, but are currently deployed to Saturn and will likely not need to move for the foreseeable future.

Tankers
The Federation operates tankers solely to assist with fuel harvesting at this time, as the Solar system is small enough that long range operations rarely need such support. The Tick ads engines and removes harvesting equipment from the Flea design. It has never been known to prevent crime.

Tugs
Occasionally a colony will need to move to a new source of minerals, when this happens the Federation calls upon its Mule class tugs, as the fastest non military ship in space, they are sometimes used for rapid secure message or personnel delivery.

Asteroid Miners
Supplementing the static colonies are the pilots and family crews of the creatively titled Miner class asteroid miner. They roam where they will, mining out deposits and leaving them for follow on freighters to pick up.

Troop Transports
The Federation has not needed a troop transport since the end of the latest conflict, but design and production of the Robert's Claim went ahead anyway, named for the asteroid colony destroyed near the end of the war, it is slow, thin skinned, and short ranged, though not intended to make hot drops anyway.

Survey Vessels
The Federation has no Geo Survey vessels currently, but they do have a design, a near copy of the Empires Coriolis class, though without the same fuel efficient engines. The Prospector would be built if a survey ship is urgently needed for some reason, otherwise it is likely a new design will be made.

The newly created Discovery class Grav survey ships represent a major departure from Empire design philosophy, fast, long ranged, and with twice the sensors of its counterpart, when created it completed its system survey before its Empire competitors, despite starting several months later due to production delays.

Military Vessels
The Federation military is untested, and a testament to how a group of individuals make poor military planners, unable to settle on an organized theme for a navy, each class is built to remarkably different specifications. Though as yet untested in battle, military planners are not greatly optimistic.
The Swarm class FAC is the smallest and fastest vessel in the system, but its fragility, small laser armament and short range places its usefulness in doubt.

The Vanguard class escort is a respectable entry, more heavily armed than its Empire counterpart, it is also about the same speed and due to its weight, better armored. Additionally its sensors and fire controls can direct its missiles for the entirety of their range, indeed designers have even future proofed it by building in longer detection range than needed.

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes
The Invincible is intended to be the primary shipkiller of the fleet, and is easily the largest and most well protected military vessel in existence, however its design is a product of compromise, it can fire large shipkilling missiles and very long range, though it can only keep this up for perhaps 10 salvoes. It has self defense ability in the form of its turrets, as well as a large anti ship laser battery. But with all these options it may not excel in any area, its speed particularly limits it by making it an easy target and being highly unlikely to catch anything with its lasers. Time will tell if the Invincible is a proof of concept for future designs, or will be relegated to the scrap heap.
