Now that I've got FACs out of my system I thought I'd move onto Scout ships  :D

Edited to add the scout design

100 kudos points(and a geek award) if you can identify where I got Raxxla from without looking it up with a search engine  :D

I have a vague memory from way back that it was a planet in Elite, but cant really recall anything else.  Perhaps where the Thargoids came from? <shrug>

Pretty close, was a mythical planet in Elite.  Sort of like Shangri-La.

This one was created so it could be built in my smaller Naval Yards and not take away from the Destroyers I was building. Not designed to travel any great distance, just get to the objective, scan and then return to nearest fuel station.

Code: [Select]
Alaska class Scout    4500 tons     393 Crew     747.5 BP      TCS 90  TH 360  EM 0
4000 km/s    JR 3-50     Armour 6-24     Shields 0-0     Sensors 12/12/0/0     Damage Control Rating 3     PPV 0
Annual Failure Rate: 49%    IFR: 0.7%    Maintenance Capacity 337 MSP    Max Repair 225 MSP

J4500(3-50) Jump Drive     Max Ship Size 4500 tons    Distance 50k km     Squadron Size 3
Military Ion Drive (6)    Power 60    Efficiency 0.90    Signature 60    Armour 0    Exp 5%
Fuel Capacity 70,000 Litres    Range 31.1 billion km   (90 days at full power)

Active Search Sensor S84-R100 (1)     GPS 8400     Range 84.0m km    Resolution 100
Short Range Thermal Sensors (1)     Sensitivity 12     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  12m km
Short Range EM Sensors (1)     Sensitivity 12     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  12m km

This design is classed as a military vessel for maintenance purposes

This is pretty close to what I would normally use in terms of size.  I normally use active sensors with a limited EM and thermal suite to back it up.  I'm thinking of moving towards a massive thermal sensor with a small EM sensor and no actives.  Most of my designs have enough fuel for about 365 days without raising shields.  The monster in my first post was a complete departure from my usual design philosophy; my largest warship is only 20 000 tons  :D

Don't forget to put some more layers of armor on there for when it runs into a nebula, otherwise your twiddling your thumbs for a long time!

Not something I've really thought about because for some reason I've never had many nebula systems in my games.  But I will have to have some sort of nebula design in my mind at least.

For scout ships my feeling is that active sensors and especially one with such a strong signal strength are counter productive.  For me the important thing is a large EM passive array, a good Thermal passive array and a reasonable range active sensor.  The other thing is suppressed engines.  This allows you to get in fairly close with little chance of being seen.  Check my dragga ship listing for an example though that was far from optimized.
