Got given a strange tech by an ally
« on: July 28, 2010, 11:04:35 AM »
One of my NPR allies has recently sent me research on a technology described as a "Swarm Extraction Module"

Is this some kind of component for the star swarms that enable them to harvest asteriods or something?

Sounds like an alien probe.

I believe so; I also received this tech from an ally.
I like Erik's idea though  :D

[spoiler:1cdhbrep]Yes, this is the technology that allows swarm workers to extract minerals from planets and turn them into 'wrecks' that a Queen can use to create new workers. In essence they create the 'eggs' and she fertilises them. After a set period a new Soldier, Worker or Queen emerges. The swarm will decide what type its needs most and the workers produce an egg of the appropriate size.[/spoiler:1cdhbrep]

I notice I can mount them on my designs.

What function would they serve if i mounted them on a ship? WOuld they act as a sorium harvester or an asteroid miner or both?

They would just create new wrecks for swarm queens. Probably not a good idea :)

Is there a description of Swarm "ecology" around here somewhere? I've never seen one, but everyone else seems to understand how it works.

There is no description as Steve likes people to discover for themselves.  It also gives your fleet intelligence officers something to do  <img src="{SMILIES_PATH}/icon_biggrin.gif" alt=":D" title="Very Happy" /> .  For a brief explanation then read inside the spolier tags. There are 3 types of Swarm.  Firstly there is the Queen (a 1000km/s 60000 tonne carrier that is armed with meson weapons.  Secondly, there are 10000km/s 600 tonne Soldiers that are armed with meson weapons.  They are the only real warships of the swarm.  Finally there are Workers.  Workers are 6000 tonnes (IIRC) and travel at 3000 km/s ish (I can't remember exactly and I'm at work).  The workers mine asteroids/comets for minerals that are used by the Queen (I think) to create eggs that hatch to create new members of the swarm.  The eggs appear on the map as wrecks of what they going to hatch into; this is the only time you will see a Swarm wreck.  Destroyed Swarm ships do not leave wrecks.  Once a Swarm is discovered it will continue to mine the resources of system and and the Queen will continue to create more soldiers and workers.

The Queen will also lay eggs in normal wrecks as well as those created by the workers

What's the swarm about? Is it like Tyranids, all extragalactical? Also, how come they sport meson guns? I kinda expected them to lob parasitical missiles.
