Moving Orbital Habitat Modules via Freighters
« on: May 19, 2012, 03:03:24 PM »
Can this be done with a big enough freighter? My plan was to haul the modules to venus and build giant habitats in place rather than build a 1000 engine tug, but I can't move them with 10 cargo hold freighters.

No, it cannot. Currently a freighter can only move prefabricated Planetary Defence Centres, which are built disassembled for exactly this purpose. An orbital habitat sits in orbit like a giant space station. It cannot be built in sections and must be built as one from the industry screen.

The only way to move a habitat is to build it at your industrial center, then move it into position using on-board engines or tug boats (tractor ships).

you can haul around ship components with freighters, and an orbital habitat module is just another ship component. However, its sheer size means you would need 50 cargo holds in a single freighter.

You really don't need 1000 Engine tugs. As an example, my Nostromo class Deep space tugs have only 15 engines (Ion Tech) which go ~3000 km/s by themselves. Hauling a 400,000 ton Fuel harvester base to the outer planets dropped speed to 262 km/s.  A 1.5 miliion ton terraformer base to Venus was 72 km/s. So it's slow, imo tugs hauling large habitats should not go fast and they get there eventually. The Empire plans for the long term and does not need everything today. or even tomorrow. Or next week.

by giant I meant 50M tons.
