Ship launched without engine
« on: November 24, 2012, 06:37:07 PM »
Don't ask how the shipyard manager allowed it to happen but a ship was launched without engines and is drifting in space at 1 k/s.   The manager is on his way to Venus without a pressure suit.
Can the crew and or the ship be rescued?
Can the ship be returned to a shipyard and can an engine be added to a completed ship?

If it is still in orbit, you should be able to refit it to a design with an engine.

every ship no matter how badly damaged can move at 1 km/s, and it isn't likely that your "orbital" got very far from earth in any event. There are two things you can do to bring it back though if this is a problem: tractor beam ship, or building a large enough carrier to have said ship land on the carrier and move it back.

Well it's not orbiting earth but it is in the same orbit that earth is in about 90 degrees away.

How can it be refitted with an engine if it's still in orbit?

How can the crew be transferred to a colony ship that I have had rendezvous with it?

This is my first game and I'm using it as a learning experience.

I will give the carrier and the tractor beam a try.

If I get it close enough to earth then I can refit it?

You can do that, or wait until Earth swings around and meets it again ;)

Or you can turn on SM mode and put the ship in orbit, then refit before incrementing time (probably what 99% of us would do :) )

OR, if you can't be bothered with any of the options above, quickly SM unlock the design and add an engine to it, then view the ship in the ships screen so that the ship is updated

I did as suggested.  It now has a 20 EP Thermal engine with a max speed listed at 2000+km/s but it is still traveling at only 1km/s

You will probably need to go to the task group screen (f12) and change the speed of the team group that the shop is in.
You will need to change the value and then I believe there is a set button to save the change.

That did it.  Thanks a lot.  Now that tired and mutinous crew can be home for Christmas!
