[center:30ehpv5s]The Power Blocks of Earth[/center:30ehpv5s]

The dawn of 2025, the Earth circled its benevolent primary, nestled within the inner Solar System, A blue white jewel against the backdrop of stars. The teeming mass of humanity moved over its surface with more hope than had been possible in many years. The advent of TN physics had finally cut the dependence on fossil fuels and provided access to both the inner and outer Solar System. Unfortunately the majority of applications of TN physics were towards warlike endeavours, better missile warheads, faster missiles, energy weapons, the list went on. More fortunately the planet was relatively peaceful at present. There were 6 TN power blocks. Most operated small 1000 tonne fast attack craft, since it the limited actions in near Earth space these had been the most effective. However the USA was leading the way to larger vessels and their Lexington class massed 7500 tonnes, only surpassed by the European folly of Le Triomphant.

The largest power block was the World Free States (population 1039.5 million); a USA inspired loose confederation that sheltered under the American retaliatory shield and covered much of the free, or nearly free world. It was often referred to as the Greater United States or simply the US.
The US Space Corp was probably the most advanced force in the world and had the most advanced ships but not many of them. There are currently four Lexington class patrol ships operated in two squadrons of two ships, due to be upgraded to three ship squadrons when new construction is commissioned. The Lexington’s are supported by two State class colliers to extend their engagement duration. In support of these ships there are four attack groups containing five ships each, four Essex class FAC each carrying 17 Gryphon missiles with 6-megaton warheads and a Sentry E1 target designator which also has an intrinsic strike capability of its own. The Attack groups are intended for near Earth orbit interdiction, while the Lexington’s are designed to operate within the inner system. The US also operates Peacekeeper and Vengeance PDCs, currently two of each. There are plans to replace the US orbital platform that was destroyed by Islamic fundamentalists in a deniable attack in which the attackers perished but not before achieving their aim. The US also maintains a civilian launch facility at Cape Canaveral capable of deploying satellites over several hundred million kilometres.

Second in economic strength to the World Free States is the European Union (population 567 million), a close ally, which also to some extent shelters under the US umbrella while having its own smaller deterrent, NATO is still strong after the recent Balkans debacle, which nearly saw war in Europe once more. While the EU now had a unified defence force and the beginnings of an overarching political union, the individual nation states had not quite disappeared, with the UK and France representing the interests of the EU on the UN Security Council neither willing to abandon its seat on the council for single EU representative. The nation states also have some limited say in the deployment of military assets, depending on their individual contributions.

The European combined deterrent and space defence was a new force and less open to manipulation by the individual member states of the EU, its principal contributors being France, the UK and Germany. The EU Space Defence Force has recently commissioned the largest warship in the world, Le Triomphant only surpassed in size by the non-combatant colony ships, freighters and terraformer. Many navies wrote this vessel off as typical European inefficiency, only mounting a single twin laser turret. The most striking thing about the ship was the great void of the hanger space. The cover story was that it was for shuttles to ferry colonists from the colony ships to the surface of Mars. Nearly all foreign intelligence services thought it was a mothership for two or three of a new class of fast attack craft. Most had no idea that it actually carried eight 247.5 tonne Hurricane FI small attack craft each equipped with five Star Flash missiles and two Atlantque Target Indicator craft to locate the target. The remaining EU military assets consisted of two missile bases and two “Astrodromes” which were equipped with 18 Hurricane FI Strike Fighters and two Atlantique Target Indicator Craft. These craft mass at or below 250 tons and were inspired by the success of the Islamic Fundamentalist attack craft had against US orbital assets which couldn’t see the 700 ton craft before they got in range. The concept has been updated and a new drive system devised to make them a potent weapons system. The fact that these craft can be covertly constructed in Earth bound factories and tested as a new shuttlecraft has so far enabled the programme to keep a very low profile and is currently unique. The secrecy of the project has been such that even the EU has no clear picture of the effectiveness of these craft. While of the foreign powers, only the US has a vague idea of their capabilities. The loading of Le Triomphant has been successfully lost in the shuttle traffic involved in preparing the Mars colony expedition for departure

With the US providing a large part of Europe’s security and the Hurricane F1 programme providing a (hopefully) cost effective defence system the EU has diverted a substantial proportion of its TN base to take humanity to the stars. The first step is the Mars programme. The first terraformer ship is enroute to Mars in company with the geological survey vessel the Vasco Da Gama. In addition two colony transports have just finished fitting out and five freighters are awaiting the first load of infrastructure for the nascent colony.

Then there are the populous Indian Confederation (population 1313 million) and China (population 1467 million), both still incipient superpowers. But both of these were somewhat hamstrung by having to finally improve substantially the living standards of their burgeoning populations. China saw itself as the next world superpower and principal rival to the USA. It has recently commissioned its first battle group intended to rival the US battle groups, which consisted of four Jianghu missile cruisers and two Luda class escorts. It is rumoured the Chinese are planning a colony within the inner system and the Battle Group is intended to protect this. For offensive action in near Earth orbit the Luhu FAC are the weapon of choice carrying 18 Star Lion missiles and capable of launching them in six missile salvos. Target acquisition is by the sensor version of the same craft. However the Jade Palace orbital installation is viewed as China’s principal near earth defence unit. The Chinese have also commissioned the first of the Great Wall PDCs to ensure an Earth bound deterrent.
The Indian military are trailing the Chinese, not so advanced in TN technology. However the Indians have one of the more numerous Space Forces, even if their capability is open to question. But there is one area in which the Indian scientists are second to none, that of cloaking, the Indian Space Force having recently commissioned three units of the Gomati class with an operating cloaking device, it reduces the Gomati class’s visibility by 85%.

The Russian Federation (population 203 million) is also a TN power, just climbing out of a severe recession due to the down grading of the value of their natural resources with the advent of TN technology and only now embarking on the TN adventure and had chosen to keep its assets on the ground or in close Earth orbit. It had yet to field a mobile force, still smarting at the disastrous denouement of its Balkans expedition that had brought the World to the brink of WW3 and led to a purge of nationalist Russia First politicians.

The final TN block was the Islamic Block (population 515 million), centred around a militant Iran and Pakistan, which had secured substantial world reputation by being an early if incomplete adopter of TN physics, willing to defy the American Pax and gain allies by exporting such TN technology as the non-TN states could handle.  This antagonism of the world’s premier power and its willingness to export a militant Islamic fundamentalism while supporting its Muslim brothers in troubled parts of the planet has put it at odds with most of the other TN States. The spacecraft operated by the Islamic Revolutionary Space Guard Corps were smaller than most designed to get in under the sensor envelope. However all were dated and the chance of an Alborz class vessel closing to firing range was now unlikely and most powers had developed sensors to pick the Falaq class Fast Attack Craft.

In addition to the first World TN powers there was the non-TN world, much of the Middle East, Africa (combined population 1023 million) and South America (population 417.5 million). These last could only watch as developments tricked down from the major players. Influence was won and lost across the unfortunate parts of the world where excesses of rulers was the norm rather than the exception and the provision of a TN fusion plant could provide power to millions and alter the allegiance of governments.
Of the TN powers only the EU and India had diverted any of its efforts to peaceful uses of the technology. For the latter this meant a geological survey of the outer system using one purpose built ship due to set off in the early summer of 2025. The outer system had been chosen simply because the EU survey ship was scheduled to have completed an inner system survey by then and the Indian Space Commission had ideas of a base on one of Jupiter’s moons.
