The Clinton Class was the UNE?s premier warship design, and was intended to be a generalist design, capable of engaging hostile units at all ranges.  It proved to be totally ineffective during the war with the colonists as its weapons were shorter-ranged than Jovian weapons and it was much slower than standard Jovian warships.  

All Clinton class units were lost during the war.  One unit, the John Kerry, was in the yards during the final battle and thus survived.  As of 2125 the Kerry has not been refitted to a newer more capable design, as the UNE Navy decided to wait for the development of the much more powerful Ion engines before upgrading this class.  Refit is planned for 2126.

The Spruance class was intended to close on a hostile unit and attack from short range.  The UNE?s designers incorporated heavy armor into its design to allow the unit to close through enemy fire.  

All existing units of this class were lost during the war with the colonists.  Since the war, all newly constructed units of this class were converted to one of the Mk 2 designs below.

In the aftermath of the disastrous war against the colonists, the UNE Navy needed to rebuild its fleet with units that could match the outstanding speed demonstrated by colonist units.  The Mk 2 version of the venerable assault ship design was the result of a hurried design process intended to allow the UNE to match colonist capabilities immediately, without the need for the development of new technologies or systems.  

The Mk 2 design merely increases engine power by 250%, increasing the class top speed to 3760 kps.  The increase in engine power is accomplished by the brute force approach of strapping on more engines rather than increasing individual engine strength.  All armor has been removed to reduce the overall tonnage and to facilitate a higher top speed.  

As of 2125 the bulk of the UNE?s Navy consists of this class.

The UNE?s Naval designers knew that if war resumed with the colonists, Spruance class ships were going to have to close through the missile envelopes of colonist warships before they would be able to engage with their lasers, therefore, the Mk 2PD class was designed to escort standard Mk 2 units.  

Mk 2PD units have their 15 cm lasers replaced with a twin 10 cm point defense turret and their fire control has been upgraded to a standard point defense suite.  The class otherwise retains the same characteristics as the standard Mk 2 designs.

In the years after the war with the colonists, UNE military planners were forced to focus almost completely on defensive issues because of the force imbalance that existed after the war, and because of the technology gap.  By 2125 the UNE?s military planners were beginning to look more towards the possibility of offensive action against the colonists.   Offensive action, though, would require a ship capable of engaging colonist planetary defenses, something the existing Spruance class units were not capable of doing.  

The Mk 2M design is a compromise based on the reality that the UNE has not been able to significantly upgrade its technology since the war.  The original plan was to introduce a replacement for the Clinton class cruisers once new tech was available, however, in the absence of new tech the Mk 2M is the best that the UNE designers could come up with.  

In this variant the standard model?s 15 cm lasers, fire control and power plant are replaced by two missile launchers, magazine space, and missile fire control.  

This class has limited magazine space and is intended only as a stop-gap measure until new technology units are available.  The design spec?s were finalized in early 2125 and the first unit will be laid down in early 2126.

With the shift from defensive preparations to a more offensive focus, the UNE military planners realized that the UNE needed a unit that could deliver ground combat units into a hostile environment with a reasonable chance of survival.  The Battle Class is better protected than the Spruance class in some ways, although it is slower.  Production on units of this class will start in 2126.

The Agincourt class was the Republic?s primary combat unit during the war with Earth.  It was units of this class that broke the back of the Earth fleet in the final battle, and they are still considered the core of the fleet at the current time.

The Mk 2 variant is slightly larger than the Mk 1, at 8,350 tons.   This is the result of the addition of an eighth Rambaut Ion engine to increase the maximum speed by approximately 10%.  

The primary purpose of the refit was to replace the Mk 1?s particle torpedo launchers with Havoc System?s new fusion torpedoes.  A third reactor was added to handle the increased power demands of the new launchers.  

The Mk 2 is the Navy?s standard design as of the beginning of 2125.

The Tribal class is intended to be an escort for larger ships.  The Jovian Navy does not consider it suitable for independent operations as it only possesses anti-missile weaponry.
