Are BFCs with range under 10k km usable for point defense task? Or should I go for 10k km minimum?

They are usable for final fire defenses, but rarely for area defense.

Final fire defense has a minimum attack range of 10k, and won't use any to-hit at ranges less than that. So if your BFC is 50% to-hit at 10k, that's your base hit chance.   Generally speaking, I'd suggest a 20k 50% range for a BFC as a bare minimum under any circumstances.   That's a 75% chance to hit at 10k.

I have made few BFCs. The first one with range 10k km exactly seems to really have 0% chance to hit at 10k km while the second one with range of 10880 has 8 % there. I will probably rather go for 40-70k km range to get ~80 % hit chance for my point defence fighters.
