That part of Independence Day totally makes more sense if you assume that we reverse engineered computer tech and software from the crashed alien spaceship they refer to in the movie during the 60s or whatever, it is still silly, but knowing this make the movie much more satisfying to me somehow.

An agreement has finally been reached with the other major powers regarding jump point access. The Asian Alliance is completed fixated on the Gitanyow homeworld as their new home. They see no point roaming around the galaxy looking for planets while an ideal one is right on their doorstep and seem mystified that the other Earth powers do not share their view. The Terrans are keen to follow the easiest and least confrontational course of action. With the Athens jump point very close to Earth and many avenues of exploration beyond it, it seems ideal from their perspective and avoids hostile aliens in Delphi and somewhere beyond Corinth. 4th January 2044
The colony expedition, led by Dracon, jumps into the Sol system. After receiving their new orders, Dracon and the two destroyers detach from the fleet and head back into Corinth, taking the supply freighter and the Hercules class scout Cherokee with them. Mayflower and the three freighters continue on to Earth. The problem for Dracon and her escorts is that Corinth is a large, empty system and their sensor range is insignificant in comparison. In order to attack and destroy the Terran ships they first need to find them. Therefore, Dracon and one of the destroyers remain at the jump point to watch for the Terran ships moving into Sol while Cherokee heads for the Mycenae jump point and the second destroyer sets course for the Herakleia jump point.
