That part of Independence Day totally makes more sense if you assume that we reverse engineered computer tech and software from the crashed alien spaceship they refer to in the movie during the 60s or whatever, it is still silly, but knowing this make the movie much more satisfying to me somehow.

I'm pretty sure it was both.  "Compatible OS" is definitely an Independence Day dig about aliens that use Macs.

Yes, both :)

Y'all do realize you are posting on a post 7 years old? And the edited date is related to a software change from phpBB to SMF?

Not to rain on any parades ;)

I'm more concerned how you managed to post 72,000 seconds before universal time even started, I'm sure the wormhole had something to do with the availability of a unix compatible computer running the correct forum software.

I had my laptop with me. While Earth-based computing was admittedly primitive at the time, fortunately there was an alien mothership in orbit with a compatible operating system.

Ah! That was after I had used an artificial wormhole that passed close to the Sun during a solar flare and I ended up in 1969. Shouldn't be editing my posts back then I realize due to the whole "changing the future" problem but I completely lost track of time.

Ah - but did someone hand you a note just before you left?

You're right. Here is the rest of it.

27th November 2044
An agreement has finally been reached with the other major powers regarding jump point access. The Asian Alliance is completed fixated on the Gitanyow homeworld as their new home. They see no point roaming around the galaxy looking for planets while an ideal one is right on their doorstep and seem mystified that the other Earth powers do not share their view. The Terrans are keen to follow the easiest and least confrontational course of action. With the Athens jump point very close to Earth and many avenues of exploration beyond it, it seems ideal from their perspective and avoids hostile aliens in Delphi and somewhere beyond Corinth. As the final clincher for the deal the Terran Union also gains sole access to the Pharsalos jump point. The Chinese don

4th January 2044
The colony expedition, led by Dracon, jumps into the Sol system. After receiving their new orders, Dracon and the two destroyers detach from the fleet and head back into Corinth, taking the supply freighter and the Hercules class scout Cherokee with them. Mayflower and the three freighters continue on to Earth. The problem for Dracon and her escorts is that Corinth is a large, empty system and their sensor range is insignificant in comparison. In order to attack and destroy the Terran ships they first need to find them. Therefore, Dracon and one of the destroyers remain at the jump point to watch for the Terran ships moving into Sol while Cherokee heads for the Mycenae jump point and the second destroyer sets course for the Herakleia jump point.

8th January 2044
The second Artemis class colony ship is completed. Like her sister, she is immediately returned to the shipyard to be upgraded to an Artemis II. Her estimated completion day is August 2044.

9th January 2044
Dracon detects a single ship at 22m kilometers on a course that will take it close to the Corinth
