Beam Point Defence

I have been toying around with the idea of trying to build a point defense ship armed with Gauss cannon turrets, and I wasn't sure if I should go for pure Gauss or mixed, so these are the results:

Personally, on a ship that size, I´d go for the mixed design, though I´d increase the number of turrets to two and reduce the number of AMM tubes and magazines a bit.

The question isn´t so much if you want beam or missile PD capability (you want both) but if you want to put both of it on a single ship or not.


Note: If possible, improve the to-hit chance of your AMMs. 76% vs. a 10.000km/s target isn´t all that impressive.

As Hawkeye said you will want both capabilities and just need to decide if you want to combine them on a single ship or not. I tend to prefer using specialized ships as you can then adjust the proportion of gauss to amm defence as the situation requires.

You will want to increase the range of your res 1 active sensor on your amm ship, it is fine for the gauss cannons but you want to be able to see incoming missiles from far enough away to be able to launch multiple salvoes of amm's if necessary(Unless of course this is going to be acting as part of a fleet with a dedicated sensor ship, in which case your current sensor is fine as a backup).

Instead of using full size cannons to make your turrets consider using size 4 cannon. Crew training will make up for the reduction in accuracy and you will be able to fit more turrets onto the design. Similarly consider using 50% range multiplier on the fire-controls as you don't really need that range for your cannons.

I was planning on making my Jump destroyer a dedicated sensor platform, so that is cool.
