United States of Terra

Background
In the closing days of the Great War, a strange vessel crashed in the deserts of the United States of America. The government under Woodrow Wilson was quick to silence any reports from this crash. Over the next ten years, American scientists researched the vessel to learn what they might from it. In 1932, the Americans built and launched their own home-built ship based on technologies found in the wreck. By 1940, most of the world had come under the umbrella of the United States of Terra. In 1947, the USTN launched their first ship aimed to discover the ?warp gates? that the records of the crashed vessel decades before hinted at.

1st Jan 1947
While the 1st Exploratory Fleet under command of Commodore Heath Badon sets off to survey the solar system, plans for a second exploration fleet and an armed defense fleet are laid down.

1st Feb 1947
Plans for improving the range of our beam fire control continue. Scientists at Oxford and MIT think by the end of March, they will be able to provide a 60% increase in control range. Keels are laid down for 6 more Essex class science vessels. These vessels are slated for the 2nd Exploratory.

1st Mar 1947
Research and construction proceeds as planned. A brief message from Commodore Badon states that they are nearly 10% done with the ?gravitational? survey of the system.

1st Apr 1947
Dr. Abelard of Oxford announced early last month that the project for improved fire control range was complete. The President instructs him to focus on improving our high resolution thermal sensors, as they are less capable that the gravitational pulse sensors. He also lays out a plan for research which includes armoring internal components, improving armor overall, and electronic warfare.

1st May 1947
Research, construction and exploration proceeds as planned. Commodore Badon reports he is nearly 20% complete with his gravitational survey. The decision is made that the 2nd Exploratory will concentrate first on planetary bodies, rather than the gravitational surveys.

1st Jun 1947
The newly formed Science Directorate announces that the project to improve the strength of the high resolution thermal sensors has been completed. Updated information from the Bureau of Vessel Construction shows that the four Lexington class destroyers for the Terra Defense fleet will be finished in early September, while the Essex vessels in late November.

1st Jul 1947
Various projects proceed as planned. Nothing new is announced.

1st Aug 1947
As there are four deep space tracking installations, (based in North America, Europe, mainland China, and the Africa continent), and only 75 missile silos, plans are laid to construct an additional 125 silos, providing 50 for each station.

1st Sep 1947
All plans are proceeding as normal. The first armed ships of the United States of Terra should be launched in the next week. The Revenue Service notifies the President that the various research and construction projects are draining the treasury rapidly. At current spending levels, the treasury will be empty in another two years. The Science Directorate is instructed to look into ways to increase the per capita revenue.

1st Oct 1947
The Terra Defense fleet under the command of Vice Admiral Adolfo Bausman is launched and held in a close orbit around Earth. The ships slated for 2nd Exploratory are still planned for a late November launch.

1st Nov 1947
The Science Directorate informs the President that their project to increase per capita revenue should be finished by the end of November. The Bureau of Vessel Construction holds to their promise of mid-November for the Essex class ships. A message is received from Commodore Badon. He is nearly 50% done with his gravitational survey.

   21st Nov 1947
The 2nd Exploratory Fleet under the command of Captain Taylor Sturgell is launched. They proceed to scan nearby planets and moons for usable minerals.

1st Dec 1947
The Science Directorate lays out plans for the coming year. Their planned projects include an armor made of a newly developed composite, electronic warfare, improving tracking speed of turrets, an increase in jump drive efficiency allowing for smaller jump engines, and an improvement in railgun launch velocities.

Erik L:
1st Jan 1948
Captain Sturgell reports that Venus is home to approximately 18 million tons of Tritanium and 16 million tons of Mercassium. (Note from the Science Directorate: The mineral names are translations of minerals found in the alien ship?s database. Other minerals include Duranium, Neutronium, Corbomite, Boronide, Vendarite, Sorium, Uridium, Corundium, and Gallicite.) Research projects continue as do the construction plans of the additional missile silos.

1st Feb 1948
Captain Sturgell reports that Mercury has substantial deposits of Duranium, Neutronium, Sorium and Uridium. Research projects proceed as planned and Commodore Badon is nearing 66% completion of his survey efforts. Orders are cut for him to finish and return to Earth for refueling and any supply needs he may have.

1st Mar 1948
Nothing new or unusual to report.

1st Apr 1948
Science Directorate reports they?ve developed their composite armor. Plans for electronic warfare have begun development.

1st May 1948
Nothing new or unusual to report.

1st Jun 1948
Nothing new or unusual to report.

1st Jul 1948
Nothing new or unusual to report

1st Aug 1948
Nothing new or unusual to report.

1st Sep 1948
The Science Directorate finished with electronic warfare and begins to improve the tracking speed of turrets. At the President?s direction, they are instructed to move ECM and ECCM components to the beginning of the queue. Commodore Badon has completed his survey and has found 2 jump points. 1st Exploratory will refuel at Earth and then head to jump point #1. Per decision made early last year, newly discovered systems (if any) will bear the names of American cities.

1st Oct 1948
Commodore Badon sends his ships through the jump point. On the far side he finds a system with three stars and a half dozen planets, one of which might be considered habitable (if one were an Inuit). At the request of the Survey Command, the Science Directorate looks for means to improve survey sensors. These projects will be time consuming and take place after the ECCM project. The Bureau of Vessel Construction looks into ways to improve the performance of the current survey ships. BuVess puts forward the following design.

--- Code: --- Essex B class Science Vessel    4500 tons     430 Crew     1149 BP      Signature 90-180
2000 km/s    JR 3-50     Armour 1     Shields 0-0     Sensors 1/0/4/4     Damage Control 0-0

For a reduction in replacement parts, and using the new composite armors, the number of sensors can be doubled. Orders are sent to Captain Sturgell to bring his fleet in for refit to the new class.

1st Nov 1948
Captain Sturgell drops into orbit around Earth. His six ships are immediately taken into the yards for refit. BuVess estimates completion of the refits by early April 1949.

1st Dec 1948
Research, refits and construction all proceed as planned.

1st Jan 1949
At the urging of the Revenue Service, the Science Directorate agrees to look into ways to improve income again, though the RS request will have to wait until after the current requests are finished. Other construction projects are proceeding as planned. In preparation for the eventual colonization of extra-terrestrial planets, BuVess lays down the plans for the Long Haul freighter and the Ark colony ship.

Five keels of each are laid and assigned to Cargo Fleet and Colony Fleet. This consumes the entirety of the shipbuilding capacity available at Earth. The bulk of the yards will be tied up for the next two to two and a half years.

1st Feb 1949
All plans are proceeding as desired.

1st Mar 1949
The Science Directorate unveils its new ECM module. BuVess looks at it and decides to design a fleet scout. Two of these ships will be laid down as soon as yard space becomes available.

1st Apr 1949
Due to a shortage in Uridium, one of Captain Sturgell?s ships will not be finished in the coming week. Priority is given to his ships for minerals.

1st May 1949
Five of Captain Sturgell?s six ships are freed from the shipyards refit to Essex B class. The final ship should be finished within the week. Two Enterprise class scouts are laid down and assigned to Terra Defense Fleet. These two ships should be ready by early October.

1st Jun 1949
The final ship of the 2nd Exploratory is released from the yards and Captain Sturgell resumes his survey of the planetary bodies.

1st Aug 1949
Research has been completed on the ECCM units. The Science Directorate takes up investigating advanced geological sensors. This project is estimated to be finished in late 1952. The Science Directorate puts forward that ?perhaps an increase in viable research facilities should take place?.

1st Sep 1949
After consideration, plans for ten additional research units are drawn up. This work will begin after the remaining six missile silos are finished.

1st Nov 1949
The missile silos have been completed. Each tracking station now commands the fire of 50 silos. This is seen as sufficient for now. Work begins on the additional research labs for the Science Directorate. The Antwerp and Barcelona scout ships finish construction also. They join the four Lexingtons in the Terra Defense fleet. Four waypoints are plotted outside of the inner system. The first two are near the jump point and the other two are on the other side of the system. Vice Admiral Bausman is ordered to take his fleet on two circuits of the waypoints on a patrol mission.

That first paragraph sounds like it came from the movie "My Science Project". Which has some funny moments if you can locate it in the rental stores. It starts with President Eisenhauer telling the Air Force to "get rid of it" when they tell him they have a wrecked alien ship.

Heh. I've seen that... ages ago. I was going for a twist on the Roswell crash actually.
