Has anyone attempted a Tolkien-esque campaign? Having gained some practical experience in my multitude of more conventional campaigns, this game seems to offer some potential for an interesting Middle Earth game start environment.

Perhaps a multi-race start, with Elves, Men, and Orcs? It would be interesting to attempt an initial game balance somewhere in the timeline of the Silmarillion I think. Possibly shortly after the Elves land on Middle Earth? Or possibly an earlier era.

Anyone have any interesting suggestions in this regard?

Back in the days of Starfire Assistant (last millennium?), someone did do a campaign based around the Orcs and Uruk Hai, demonstrating the utility of GFFP (Genocide For Fun and Profit) in which the objective was to move in on NPR planets, nuke the indigs into glowing gas () and take over the infrastructure and real estate for more deserving Orcs.

This was such a cost effective strategy in Starfire that it led directly to Steve developing the effects of dust in Aurora

Might have been Clarke not Asimov. I've read a lot of both and it's hard to keep authors straight sometimes.

I think it was Arthur C Clarke. Search for Issak Arthur Clarke tech on youtube, you might find it interesting.

I think Asimov once said something like 'Sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic'. I've always thought he was on to something with that mindset.

Somehow I find funny that in heroic fantasy games, someone is going to make a sci-fi mod/campaign, while in sci-fi game, someone is going to make a fantasy mod/campaign  ;D

I want to do one, but was thinking more on the lines of a fifth age.

An excellent suggestion, but I do not yet feel capable of such an undertaking.
