Performance, recommended PC?
« on: March 06, 2014, 03:34:58 PM »
Sorry if this is the wrong place.

I currently play Aurora on a little ultrabook - i5-4200U (2x 1.6-2.5 Ghz),  Intel HD4400, 8GB RAM-1600, moderately fast SSD. It's playable, but not as fast as I would like.
Would I get better performance on my ancient desktop - Q6600 (4x 3.2 Ghz) , Nvidia Gefore 8800GTX, 4GB RAM-1200, 10000RPM hard drive?

I'd simply test it, but my desktop isn't currently running a compatible operating system.
Any performance tricks would also be very welcome.
Thank you for you time.

I'd think you would have issues with resolution size.

Aurora is database intensive. Writes to the access db, cpu power to munch those calculations, and memory to hold it all. I don't see why your ultrabook wouldn't run Aurora faster than the older computer. I'd be willing to bet the older one would run it slower.

You don't mention your OS. Guessing Win7 or Win8 64bit. Aurora is not multithreaded/cored, and it is 32-bit.

Wow, that was quick!

A higher resolution would be nice, but it's 1080p in either case so that's not a criterion.

Notebook is running Windows 8 64-bit.
Desktop is currently running Arch Linux (no joy with WINE). The only OSes I have lying around are Windows Vista and Windows Server 2012 (both 64 bit).

Thank you for the pointer, it looks like I'm indeed better off sticking with the laptop.

I'm not convinced of that.

Given those stats I would guess both systems would be CPU bound. If the i5 is throttling due to heat it could be running half the CPU clock speed that the Q6600 could sustain.

Maybe so, but he's not got a decent OS to put on it to run out of the zip.
