Incursion at JP Sigma Draconis Part 1
« on: October 24, 2012, 04:29:14 PM »
In my 6.1 campaign for the United Nations of Earth I've found (SM-ed there) an NPR in the Kowloon system 2 jumps away from Sol. I decided to plant some buoys at the JPs to be sure that no "Loon" incursion can occur. The Minelayers arrived to the JP and found right away a "Loon" ship sitting there. It's presumably a gate builder. I can not allow them to go where they want in my territory. My  minelayers are equipped with long range size 14 MIRV-ed missiles and some standard size 4 ones and I gave them the order to engage enemy.

My minelayer design:
Quote
Stalwart class Minelayer    8,950 tons     237 Crew     1092.76 BP      TCS 179  TH 540  EM 0
4022 km/s     Armour 2-38     Shields 0-0     Sensors 6/6/0/0     Damage Control Rating 4     PPV 42
Maint Life 2.02 Years     MSP 305    AFR 160%    IFR 2.2%    1YR 100    5YR 1496    Max Repair 72 MSP
Intended Deployment Time: 12 months    Spare Berths 3

Klimov SEI-144 Military Drive (5)    Power 144    Fuel Use 34.06%    Signature 108    Exp 8%
Fuel Capacity 600,000 Litres    Range 35.4 billion km   (101 days at full power)

MBDA SWM-14 Launch Tube (3)    Missile Size 14    Rate of Fire 210
General Electrics SFA-51U Missile Fire Control (1)     Range 51.5m km    Resolution 17
Novator SSM-100 Alpha (7)  Speed: 14,400 km/s   End: 49.1m    Range: 42.4m km   WH: 4    Size: 4    TH: 67 / 40 / 20
BAE TEM-10 Thermobuoy (5)  Speed: 0 km/s   End: 0m    Range: 0m km   WH: 0    Size: 10    TH: 0 / 0 / 0
MBDA PSTM-14 Fisherman Thermal Mine (10)  Speed: 0 km/s   End: 1.1d    Range: 0.1m km   WH: 0    Size: 14    TH: 0 / 0 / 0
MBDA MAS-211 Long Range Missile (5)  Speed: 4,700 km/s   End: 749.8m    Range: 212m km   WH: 0    Size: 14    TH: 15 / 9 / 4

General Electrics SSA-51 Active Array (1)     GPS 6400     Range 51.2m km    Resolution 100
Changzhou SSP-6T (1)     Sensitivity 6     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  6m km
Changzhou SSP-6EM (1)     Sensitivity 6     Detect Sig Strength 1000:  6m km

Missile to hit chances are vs targets moving at 3000 km/s, 5000 km/s and 10,000 km/s

This design is classed as a Military Vessel for maintenance purposes

The squadron consists of:
UNN Admiralty - jump tender, Commander Naomi Conolly
UNN Stalwart - Captain Anais de Bourdeille
UNN Wilder - Captain Sira Belkin

Additional forces are at Earth in the case of an unsuccessful attack.
Those are:
12th Cruiser Squadron "Brandenburg"
CA UNN Brandenburg
CA UNN Derfflinger
CA UNN Deutschland
DDG UNN Udaloy
DDG UNN Arkhandelsk
DDG UNN Saratov
DDG UNN Chelyabinsk

20th Carrier Squadron "Essex" - momentally refitting to Ion Engine standards
CV UNN Essex
CV UNN Langley
18x General Dynamics A-34 Warhawk
2x Tupolev Tu-221 Strizh AWACS
6x Boeing B-75 Astrofortress

The minelayers launched their long range missiles from a distance of cca 120m kilometers. Since these missiles have thermal sensors on board they were launched without activating the sensor suit.

The second stage separates successfully releasing two Eurosam SSM-5T's. The enemy is now in range of the onboard thermal sensors. It was identified as Bermat 002 with a thermal signature of 800.

The missiles hit the target, it's definitely not a construction ship. It fired back and shot down 2 missiles. Captain Anais de Bourdeille with the approval of the President of The United Nations decided to check out the ship with active sensors, fire some obsolete missiles from his magazine and then retreat ASAP to Earth. Meanwile the 12th Cruiser Squadron "Brandenburg" was alerted and sent full speed to the jump point.

The fired salvos surely had some effect because the crew of the minelayers noticed that Bermat 002 is streaming atmosphere.

Will continue later. :)

Good grief, SM'ing a NPR basically right next to Sol is rarely a good idea.
There is only option man, you or them, this sector is too small for the two of you.

If it was a gate constructor, it's possible it's outfitted with CIWS, which are allowed for Civilian designs. The thermal signature sounds too small for that however.

I've decided to SM them there, because previously i've found an another empire in the Kowloon system on a gas giant (bug?). It would be cool to RP them as sorium breathers, but they were so pathetic (EM signature 125 of the planet) that I've blowed them away and planted a new empire on the third moon of the same gas giant (class 0.83 suitability).

The carriers arrived to the specified waypoint and the UNN Langley launched the 1st Squadron "Stormhawks" Consisting of 9x GR.24's and one Tu-221 AWACS that was under the command of Squadron Leader Captain Josh Chandler. The 2nd Squadron "Gladiators" was readied, but not launched because Captain Declan Bibi suspected that the enemy ship is now heavily damaged and it's unlikely she survives the first wave.

The 1st Squadron reached the ideal firing position after 8 hours and lanuched 18 Matra SSM-22 Hellbounds. The Bermat continued to sit right on the jump point with no reaction to the events at all. Still no other enemy ships on horizont, if it's a construction ship, the jump gate to Sol is already complete...

16 missiles impacted in the Bermat, to no avail. "Stormhawks" are called back and 2nd Squadron "Gladiators" under the command of Squadron Leader Commodore(what the heck, I have to give her a better assignment :D ) Kate Mardsen is launched.

Finally Bermat 002 is vaporized! The minelayers are called back to troughoutly mine the JP. A major counteroffensive is being prepared to clean the Sigma Draconis system.

Very nice little write up and I really like the detailed component names - certainly helps with the immersion.

One thing I was wondering about was the deployment time for the fighters, I would have thought you could have gotten away with 10 - 20 days and saved a huge amount of tonnage on them?

I consider myself a naming geek. I really enjoy to give a specific name to everything beginning with ground forces to whole systems. I have an urge to name enemy ships too, if I consider their original name inadequate.  :)

To fighter deployment time.
I've noticed, that their deployment times advances with the carriers, when they are on a mission somewhere. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that my carriers have Flight Crew Berths of 0 and I don't know how that occurred, (the carriers before the refit had flight crew berths of 3) Im going to look at this in SM.

You need to hit the toggle to keep crew spaces so you fighter crews have somewhere to sleep. :) I did a combat simulation over several in-game days using fighters with a IDT of 0.1 months and that seemed to go fine, as long as they had somewhere to sleep on the carrier. :)

Ah, so my pilots are sleeping in their fighters. Now that's a battle morale, being on alert 24 hours a day!  ;D

Now seriously ...  I have bad news and good news.
The good news are that no more incursion occurred in the last one year.
The bad one it that one jump from Sol my geological survey ships encountered new enemy ships. These are not from Kowloon this is in fact in the opposite direction. In my next step I'll check out if these new guests stream atmospere or not.
