Jump Drive Question
« on: July 16, 2019, 12:39:12 AM »
Is there a benefit to having two Jump Drives?

Can I move twice as many ships in a squadron jump?

Will I be able to Jump farther?

No... you can only benefit from a single jump engine on a ship.

Only a very slight one in certain edge cases.

Two (identical) jump drives provide redundancy, and most people (in Aurora VB6 at least) find themselves 'padding out' non-combatant jumpships with extra cargo, fuel, maintenance or the like to get the size just right (due to the 'smaller of ship size or jump drive' limt).  A second jump drive can be used for this, though it is worse in every way than almost any other option (cargo is cheaper, fuel and/or maintenance more useful, CIWS and/or armour better for defense, excess crew berths more 'hits to kill' on the DAC).  C# Aurora has removed this limit, so it will no longer be necessary to have a 60,000 ton jumpship to move a 59,990 ton second vessel.

Can I move twice as many ships in a squadron jump?

Nope.  Only the first functioning jump drive of the required type (militray or 'any') and size counts for Squadron transits.  (Standard transits move unlimited numbers of ships anyway).

Will I be able to Jump farther?

Er, only if you choose Squadron Transit and use a jump drive with a longer radius.  Standard Transits always put the vessels on top of the jump point.

I like padding my commercial jump drive ship with a single salvage module, on the theory that any mission beyond the jump gate network is likely to involve a battle and therefore salvage.
