If' you've just started a new game, 10. If you've been playing for a while and the Rift just showed up out of the blue, then...maybe less than 10? Depends how strong you are militarily and if the rift is particularly close to any valuable colonies.

Oh crap. Well, its a Binary System... First Star has only asteroid belts around. Aether Rift appeared day one. When i saw it i was scared smegless so i rushed some smegty frigates to escort my Geosurvey ship... Even parked them close to the rift, nothing happened, ran out of fuel because tech is still crap. I am considering making a Space Station around it when i can... You know, just in case, with a few dozen carronades on it... A civillian station there to help with the mining, repair and maintain some FACs, fighers and a couple of Corvettes.
But base on what you guys are saying, i should be preparing my prayers instead lol
*Edit*: Also, i did found a wierd planet on my solar system. No buildings on it, as far as i know, no ships in orbit or within, but 1.384 infrastructure in it and a smeg ton of resources. Thats in the scale of 40kk or so. Its more Durannium than i know how to spent. Same goes for the other resources, around 5kk to 11kk tons... Man, this solar system gives me the creeps.

As some other people have said in another thread: This is the perfect time for the classic saying amongst the unspoiled circles of difficult and complex gaming "THE CIRCUS HAS COME TO TOWN EARLY THIS SEASON! Have some !!FUN!!".
Big hard 10. Good Luck.

First you need a naval space weapon, like a gauss cannon (planetary PD) or laser/railgun/particle beam etc.

Then you design a static weapon with an STO component, my recommendation is not to armor it unless you want a single gun to take decades to build. Fortification is armor for STOs.
When you select the STO component you'll be able to pick from a list of compatible weapons you've already designed, gauss weapons can be designated as PD weapons (but you might need to use a turret STO in order to benefit from improved tracking), every STO weapon can also choose to mount ECCM if available.

Should i bother trying particle beams?

I recommend going to the Particle Lance thread for answers on that.
