From the ashes - part 21
« on: January 24, 2017, 03:29:56 AM »
15th September 2393

The last of the twelve Lancelot class destroyers leaves the Republican yards above Gniezno. Fortunately the economical situation has stabilized so shipbuilding can continue without any interruptions, but the government is uncertain whether or not the now vacant shipyard should be utilized. The Cronus class cruisers provide all that is needed to protect the battleships – gauss cannons, anti-missiles and heavy lasers while the destroyer sized vessels are too small to be generalist design like that. In the end the decision is made to expand the mid sized yard to increase the number of cruisers built simultaneously. In the future it is possible the battle groups will comprise only battleship and cruiser sized warships.

20th October 2393

The Commune Pineda shipyard has been moved from the New Prague habitat to the recently established Gardatis colony in the Behemoth system. The yard is used to build orbital defense platforms, the demand for which has increased significantly recently due to the threat of the Travelers coupled with new colonies being established. As the shipyard could not expand in its previous location, as the habitat could not grown, it had to be moved. In the future Gerdatis will become one of the few shipbuilding centers in the Commune and additional shipyard is already under construction in the low orbit.

10th November 2393

The Second Battlecruiser Division has been sent to the recently discovered system of ES – 153 FFFGH7 to clear it of the ADS presence. As the formation contains four escort cruisers, each with four gauss cannon turrets, has superior speed and shields it has been ordered to attempt to do so without use of any ordnance whatsoever. Their first task will be to deal with a recently detected ADS cruiser.

12th November 2393

The Second Battlecruiser Division easily destroys the ADS cruiser.

21st November 2393

The Second Battlecruiser Division closes on the two bases orbiting the fourth planet of the lowest mass star in the ES – 153 FFFGH7 system without encountering any more mobile units. As the ships have no offensive missiles, they have to close on the bases and weather their use of anti-missiles in offensive mode, fifty five of which were fired in each volley.
As ADS has never improved their technology since the first contact, their anti-missiles were slow and easy to intercept for the massive defenses of the escort cruises. Not a single enemy piece of ordnance managed to get through, leaving the bases exposed and easy targets.
While the victory seems almost trivial by now, the Force and the Oversight Committee still consider this to be an important milestone, as the Commune managed to clear the system without use of any ordnance. If this proves to be the rule rather than exception, than the ADS will become for all instances and purposes little more than a nuisance rather than a threat.

25th February 2394

The Commune government receives a worrying report from one of their survey ships, the Bernard's Star, which was exploring new stars in the Ayuthaya sector. Several weeks ago she discovered a new system, designated ES – 161 KKH9 which had an anomaly nearly identical to that found in Peter's Crossing. The system is six jumps from the nearest inhabited star, the Behemoth, and the lack of jump gates means it's impossible to simply establish a listening post.
The sector is theoretically being defended by the Fifth Fleet, stationed above the capital planet of Gaillard. Unfortunately the formation is very weak, even weaker than the major components of the Third Fleet were during the first Traveler incursion. As such the government has only two choices – send new warships to the system or post a scout whose job will be to picket the anomaly and warn the government if anything comes out.
The second choice is the most tempting one, but also the most dangerous one. There are currently almost no ships with jump drive that are also faster than the Travelers. In addition if the aliens managed to entrench themselves before any response arrives, it could lead to a bloody and costly jump point assault. Of course leaving the enemy contained in the system is also an option, but if that is done, the Travelers may find a dormant jump point into important Commune systems, as right now it is not known what lies beyond ES – 161. All of which means new forces have to be sent to the system, to establish a close defense.
This unfortunately will further deplete the Home Fleet. Several new formations have recently finished training and could be assigned to the Sixth Fleet, which will take over defense of the ES – 161, but this will leave the primary Commune strategic reserve with little more than gunboats. New formations will be established as soon as possible of course, but construction is still limited. Even so the government sees little choice, as the Travelers may become a significant danger if left alone.
Additional problem will be lack of support for the new fleet, as due to lack of jump gates it will be impossible to establish a colony in the ES – 161. The new vessels have three years of endurance, but even so they will be six jumps from the nearest colony and it will take several years to extend the jump gate network to the system, which means almost always at least some parts of the Sixth Fleet will be away for shore leave and overhaul. Of course this also means there will be no static defenses in the system.
In the end all those issues are accepted as unavoidable. The new fleet will contain two cruiser divisions, which can be sent immediately, three destroyer squadrons which will need to wait for ammunition from Zuiderzee and two frigate squadrons which will be sent from Eden.

9th April 2394

The first elements of the newly formed Commune Sixth Fleet arrive in the ES – 161 system. The anomaly has moved but so far there is no sign of the Travelers.

19th July 2394

Despite the potential threat from the Travelers in ES – 161, the Commune government does not want to unduly focus on the problem. After all the enemy incursions were very infrequent and many believe that the aliens do not produce the anomalies, but merely use them after they find them which is why there is no sign of the enemy in the new system. As such while it obviously has to be guarded, neither the Administrator nor the Oversight Committee are willing to waste any more forces on the problem than they already have, unless something changes.
As such the Second Battlecruiser Division which has recently completed overhaul has been sent to continue their extermination of the known ADS holdouts with the newest target being the system of ES -  113 KH6 located in the Ayuthaya sector.

28th July 2394

The battle with the ADS was long but not dangerous in the end, as the aliens used missiles once again and the defenses held easily. Three frigates, three destroyers and two bases have been destroyed.

1st October 2394

Tracking stations in the Commune system of ES – 26 detect a new anomaly, similar to those found in Peter's Crossing and ES – 161. The system is somewhat out of the way, with no nearby colonies but is still technically part of the Phoenicia sector, protected by the Fourth Fleet, which consists of two cruiser divisions, two frigate squadrons and three gunboat flotillas and is responsible for numerous systems, including Phoenicia itself, Dazbog, where a very important mining and missile manufacturing site is located, and ES – 104 which has a secret connection to the Hegemony.
With no reinforcements possible at the moment, due to the Home Fleet consisting only of gunboats and three larger formations still in training, the government found itself in a situation where they have to take some risks. The entire Fourth Fleet is ordered to the ES – 26 system, leaving the rest of the sector essentially undefended. Fortunately there are no other dangers in the area, not even an ADS presence.
As was the case with ES – 161, the main long term problem will be support for the warships. As they consists of older models, some of them have endurance of only two years and with no reinforcements available, having even one formation out system for overhaul would significantly weaken the entire force. The third planet in the system could be colonized, but would be very inhospitable and very hard to modify, requiring over fifty percent more supporting infrastructure than the majority of planets settled by the Commune. The government however sees no choice but to go ahead with the development, as they need the fleet to be able to stay in the system for extended periods of time. The star is renamed Rampart and the planet is renamed Gotland.

5th November 2394

A new Traveler cruiser is detected in Peter's Crossing. The First Battlecruiser Division supported by Sixth and Eight Cruiser Divisions is sent to deal with the problem. The vessel is easily destroyed thanks to superior Commune numbers.

15th February 2395

While the Republican home system of Phoenix is best known for the huge number of habitable planets and enormous alien ruins, the system is also self-sufficient in terms of resources. Unfortunately the best sites have been mined out and the available minerals, while plentiful and easy to access, are spread between five different planets. This however isn't as big a problem as it may seem, as due to low population and very large and efficient industry the government had no choice but to build automated mines anyway, and the lack of manpower meant the factories more often than not had nothing better to do, resulting in large extraction sector.
Even so the government is concerned with the efficiency so they decided on what can be best described as a risky move – they decided to establish their first mining location outside the home system. The location chosen is the second planet of the ECN 4799 system, which lack official name, due to being dwarf planet with no potential for colonization, but it also has all eleven TN elements present. And while the current plan is to still keep the majority of mines in Phoenix, the small colony is still considered to be an important milestone in the expansion of the Republic.

2nd September 2395

The first six Commune Sikorski class bases are fully operational on Ceylon and have all of their assigned fighters. The process took much longer than expected due to slow construction of new factories and manpower shortages on the planet itself. To make matters worse the colony fleets had other priorities, making the situation difficult. Fortunately more of them are becoming free now so the situation should begin to improve.
While seventy two fighters seem like a very small amount, considering how many a Hegemony carrier can launch, they are operating on the assumption that the enemy will either have no interceptors of their own, or will have them in limited numbers themselves and with more primitive technology to boot. There is of course no way to know whether or not this is true, but so far the Hegemony has been operating in a situation where no one else – be it human or alien – had carriers of their own, so this assumption is considered reasonable. What matters however is that the new small craft will not be assigned to Ceylon but to Gibraltar, so a way to transport them is needed.
The naval designers took a careful look at the available shipyards and designed a small ten thousand tonne vessel. As construction of frigates is quicker than destroyers, Courland has currently many unassigned Saimaa class escort ships which could be assigned to carrier formations. Not only that but by using the shipyard which produces them, the new carriers could potentially be built without interrupting formation of new destroyer squadrons, an important consideration due to many commitments of the Force, leaving it very spread out, potentially to catastrophic consequences.
Unfortunately while the proposed ship could carry twelve fighters with enough fuel and ammunition for two strikes, it had neither defenses nor sensors. It was more like a transport barge than a warship. Even so as the Administrator pointed out, the fighters were always seen as something of a one-trick pony, a way to survive the next conflict against much larger and stronger Hegemony which nearly tripled its population and industrial base thanks to the conquest of the alien race. As such the carriers will have little function aside from transporting fighters and engaging Hegemony bombers, making them useless against any other threat and possibly even useless in the further conflicts with New Earth. As such their limitations are of little consequence.
Overall the government decided to authorize formation of two light carrier squadrons with the new ships being designated as the Courland class. Each formation will comprise six carriers, six Saimaa class frigates and a Kinhu class destroyer leader.

26th December 2395

Four Traveler vessels arrive from the anomaly in the ES – 161 system. Three of them appear to be jump gate construction ships while the fourth one is a sixteen thousand tonne destroyer of a previously unseen class.
As there are no basing facilities in the system, the Sixth Fleet has been rotating its formations, sending them back to inhabited worlds for shore leave, resupply and overhaul one at a time. Unfortunately the enemy arrived at the most incontinent of times, as the Ninth Cruiser Division, the most modern and powerful formation, is currently the one missing. Even so this leaves a cruiser division, three destroyer squadrons and two frigate squadrons to deal with a single enemy. Of course there is still the possibility of more enemies emerging.
The biggest problem for Vice Admiral Philip Persson, commanding the fleet, is the low speed of the Tenth Cruiser Division, which comprises older units, making them slower than the enemy. Worse as the very first battle against the Travelers has shown, the anti-missiles make very dangerous weapon. As such he has two choices – leave the division to its own devices, possibly ordering it to run away or to split his forces. He decides on the latter, leaving the frigate formations to keep an eye on his cruisers, while sending the destroyer squadrons to deal with the enemies.
As the three squadrons move towards the alien, they detect incoming waves of large anti-ship missiles, but only eleven at a time. Those are easily dealt with using gauss cannons. Even worse for the aliens, the launchers and magazines took so much space, they had no secondary weapons, making them an easy pray for the railgun armed destroyers and frigates.
The battle ended up in a decisive and easy Commune victory, but at the same time confirmed the aliens are likely to use any and all anomalies found. This not only means the Fourth and Sixth Fleets have to remain where they are, but if more anomalies appear, they will have to be picketed, further scattering the Force.

25th April 2396

The Commune colony of Gardatis has finally expended its new shipyard to twenty five thousand tonnes of capacity. Its first task will be to upgrade the old Rugewit and Elatha class cruisers to the newest engine standards, after which they will work on the survey ships. Once that is done the colony will begin construction of a completely new class of ships, although one that is still in the conceptual stage.

30th September 2396

The anomaly in ES – 161 disappears, leaving no trace behind. There were no further Traveler incursions since the December last year, which means the Sixth Fleet is essentially intact.
While humans are still unable to close the anomalies, despite considerable effort, the fact they can disappear on their own significantly changes the strategic situation. While some believe this to be a ruse, the ES – 161 system is far away from any inhabited worlds and can be safely abandoned with only a light picket left behind. If the Travelers come again, there will be time to reinforce. As such the fleet will now move to Rampart to relieve the Fourth Fleet from their duty, so it can return to protect the rest of the Phoenicia sector.

15th November 2396

The anomaly in Peter's Crossing suddenly disappears. As the government and the general population were breathing a heartfelt sigh of relief a report came from tracking station in ES – 18 system informing of an anomaly appearing there. Whether it's a new one, or if the original one merely moved interstellar distances is unknown.
The ES -18 system has two candidates for colonization but is uninhabited. It is in fact a dead end star connecting only to ES – 12 system. Despite its lack of proper name, the ES – 12 is nonetheless one of the most strategically important systems in the Commune, for it connects to the systems of Athens, Sudetes and Adriatic, which have a total population of more than one and a half billion people. In many ways the system is the very heart of the Sudetes sector, which is currently the most heavily inhabited and industrialized one. There is very little doubt that a forward defense in ES – 18 will be needed.
The area is responsibility of the Second Fleet, but with the need to divert forces to the Third and Sixth Fleets, the formation is rather weak. Numerous gunboat flotillas are present in the Pacific system, keeping an eye on the Hegemony and a couple of frigate squadrons are located in orbit of Eden undergoing refits and training, but the core for the fleet, located in Sudetes system itself, comprises a cruiser division, two old frigate squadrons and three gunboat flotillas. More will be needed.
The logical place to get reinforcements from would be the Third Fleet, which is no longer needed to protect against the Travelers. However the Knossos system is still the most likely one to be attacked by the Destroyer. If another ship like the previous one arrives, it should be no issue. The static defenses are significant and sixteen flotillas of Piranhas are present. With missiles four generations ahead of what was used in the previous battle, those forces could easily deal with two, maybe even three ships like the one encountered before. Unfortunately if the Destroyers send a proper warship next time, or larger fleet, the current heavy units stationed there will be needed.
Unfortunately the government sees no way around it. The Home Fleet is weaker than it was in decades, with only a couple of major formations ready to fight. Gunboat flotillas are present in significant numbers, but those may very well be next to useless without anti-missile defenses provided by larger vessels. Other formations are also relatively weak, although the points of contact with Hegemony are covered well and there are few other dangers, so the Force can afford to be relatively weak in those areas. But what really convinces government to weaken the Third is the fact that the sensor network spreads far away from Knossos and newer warships are much faster than those during the previous incursion. In short there will be time to react and redeploy if the Destroyers come again. In total three cruiser divisions and two frigate squadrons will be sent to ES – 18.
As the system will need population to support a proper fleet base, colonization efforts will also be underway soon. The system is thus renamed Thermopylae and the planet is named Bastille.

20th June 2397

The Hegemony designs their next generation carrier, the X-235 Invincible. Massing three hundred thousand tonnes, it's forty thousand tonnes larger than the preceding Vengeance but carries twenty five percent more bombers. However, while the carrier has the exact same armor and armament as her predecessor, making her as combat effective, she has shorter range and maintenance life. This was accepted, as it should still be more than enough for the Navy's needs and the formations spend most of their life in orbit of New Earth anyway. Coupled with increased speed, allowing the carrier to get to her target quicker, it was considered more than acceptable trade off, especially as this allowed the Invincible to carry a total of two hundred bombers with enough magazine capacity for three full strikes, each comprising two thousand missiles.

The Republic develops inertial confinement fusion drives. Unlike the Commune their Navy has very few commitments, as the only truly critical system is Phoenix itself and only three more are inhabited. For that matter they have no boarders with aliens or the Hegemony, all of which allows them to take time to refit their warships increasing their speed to fifty seven hundred kilometers per second.
New missiles have also been designed.

6th August 2398

For the first time since the war Khamali, the Hegemony occupied homeworld of Takarans, experiences a positive population growth. Due to radiation, ash, war devastation and associated disruption of services as well as armed resistance, the total population fell from six and a half billion at the beginning of the occupation to six billion and a hundred million. Coupled with casualties of the war itself it is believed that over seven hundred and fifty million Takarans died in the conflict although the exact number will likely remain unknown due to sheer amount of records destroyed.

26th September 2398

The Hegemony develops inertial confinement fusion drives. By this point they have ten carriers ranging from one hundred and ten thousand tonne Vigilant to two hundred and sixty thousand tonne Vengeance. The eleventh carrier, the three hundred thousand tonne Invincible, is still under construction. All of those have of course numerous escorts and are equipped mostly with newest bombers and munitions.
Even so no one has any illusion about the strength of the Hegemony Navy. It is adequate against most aliens, but against the Destroyer and the Commune it's likely still too weak. Unfortunately while the continued expansion would the the logical choice under the circumstances there are two issues. First some of the ships are so old they can move at only three thousand kilometers per second and even modern formations are held back to mere five thousand kilometres per second due to the command cruisers not being upgraded. For comparison the speed of newest designs will be eight thousand kilometers per second, making this a significant difference. Of course the increased fuel efficiency also increases the range of newest ships, but it's less important.
The second problem however is much greater – there is currently not enough uridium mining going to to support the current building rates. The Pulaski colony is still small and the best source of the mineral, the Takaran homeworld of Khamali, has severe efficiency issues due to post-war devastation and ongoing resistance. In short construction will have to be severely limited or maybe even completely suspended within a year, two at most, making it a logical time to perform engine upgrades which will cost gallicite only.
While most of the ships will receive simple engine upgrades, a new bomber was designed. It uses more powerful engines, proportionally speaking, at the cost of fuel efficiency and has new electronic suite. New missiles have also been developed.

5th February 2399

A single Traveler jump gate construction ship appears in the Commune system of Rampart. It is easily destroyed by Eight Cruiser Division.
The sporadic appearances of the aliens coupled with the fact that construction vessels are usually the first to appear in any new system, led some to believe the incursions are in fact colony expeditions with warships sent simply due to prudence. The opponents of this theory point out that so far neither colony ships nor freighters have been observed. All sides agree however it is very likely the Travelers cannot send information back to their home systems, otherwise a much larger fleets would be appearing.

Thank you, I'm glad you're enjoying it, as I have a lot of fun playing it.

The next update will include year 2400 and will consist basically entirely of the national summaries, which will include the maps. However as it takes me an hour or two to double check the posts and format them, I usually do them when I have a free day, so it won't come out until sometime next week.
