The year is 2040, and we are unraveling. Our once united front against the BETA, is nothing more than an extension of our bitter, fragile, power struggle. Questions like: Who protected the world? Who invented the G-Dan? Who used them? Who killed more BETA? Who is at fault for the fall of Moskva? Even when the Berlin Wall fell, in the 1990s, nobody was surprised that the first order of business was to point fingers, rather than ask the question 'Who will protect Europe now?'
A small history lesson: In the 1960s when we sent Astronauts to the Moon, we encountered biological entities of extra-terrestrial origin. Live footage was sent to the Earth of the Astronauts getting chomped on by these... things... and a general state of emergency was declared, and this new race was called 'BETA' which stands for: The Beings of Extra Terrestrial origin which is Adversary of the human race. For the first time since world war 2, the world was a united force. Space-traversing technology speed picked up, and we found the means to transport tanks, weapons, ammunition, logistics and infrastructure to the Moon to fight these monsters... but it was hopeless. Their tough skin, incredibly huge numbers, and disregard for personal safety due to the lack of any intelligence, made them our natural predators. Then the Laser Class appeared, and shot down every craft and missile we could send the Moon's way. Before we knew it, the Moon Hive, had sent a fragment of itself to Earth, which produced another Hive, in Southeast Asia. The rest, really, is history.
In the face of extermination we invented Tactical Surface Fighters, humanoid fighting machines employing 65mm HESH rounds, 128mm cannon rounds, and we fought a bitter battle ever since. In 1980, humanity's population was reduced from 6 billion to 1 billion. Asia was lost- our world was divided across the middle. Europe convened it's own Union of West Germany and the rest of Europe, heavily defending the Mediterranean Sea, and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics did similar with East Germany and what remained of Russia, with most of it's western, and Siberian, lands intact. With the United States of America returning to it's own Isolationism after World War 2, this left us, the Empire of Japan, to fend for ourselves-- and a bitter fight it was.
But things did look better for Humanity, though it was still a downhill spiral. The formation of the United Nations, and the fall of Moskva in the mid 1980s saw the world come together once more, and even USA realized slowly that the two hot spots that the world fought over time and time again, were now the places they had to defend. If Japan fell, the United States of America would as well. Not to mention that the distance from Alaska to the Eastern most edge of the Asian continent is so small, that it had to be defended. And if East Germany fell just like Moskva... well, there is no need to explain, is there?
Fast forward to year 2004, and our technology has advanced so far, that we had allowed ourselves the luxury of 2 options. 20 years before that, there were no options. Now we had 2. One was a suicide charge on 'Zero' Hive, the first Hive that fell on the Earth, followed by a counter attack on the Moon Hive, proceeding into complete extermination of the BETA threat. Option 2 was to deploy Gravity Bombs, or G-Dan, to turn Earth into a wasteland, hover around in space for a few decades, come back, and hopefully the BETA would be dead. When East Germany finally fell, the decision was made to launch the bombs.
In the end, what truly happened was a mix of the two. The Empire of Japan infiltrated Zero Hive, killed the 'Commander' intelligence located there, the existence of which was found out about weeks before the bombing was scheduled. Protests were made not to launch the bombs, that the BETA can be defeated this way. A united front of UN, EU, USSR and Japan saw the Zero Hive destroyed- but the Americans still launched the G-Dan across all of Asia. The small part of the world that was recovered had no room for the UN, and it was dissolved. East Germany was recovered, and so was Moskva. The Iron Curtain was up, and the USA, no longer fearing BETA invasion, returned to it's isolationism, staring at it's ancient nemesis, USSR, from across the Pacific and Atlantic. And the EU, still pretending to be the Knight in shining armor, impotently dances to the tune of false promises and fake reports. Now everyone's eyes turn to Japan. Our usefulness expiring once the BETA are expelled from the Solar System, everyone's question is: Who gets our massive resources, and extremely advanced technology, due to cooperation with the UN and USA, to produce TSFs worthy of holding the line, when outnumbered 10000 to 1.
Come to 2030, and we finally eradicate the BETA from Pluto, and with it, the rest of the Solar System. We are finally free, but we know that somewhere, there exists a Hive which received all the knowledge of our tactics and armaments, ready to strike against us. Even freeing Pluto was a dangerous prospect in which Japan alone lost so many Battalions, that the Royal Guard itself was reduced to just one, with all of 3 Type 00c Takemikazuchis left to defend the Shogun, Mitsurugi Mei.
And now, 2040, in the face of massive resource shortages, the USSR demands that the Empire of Japan hand over half of it's resource rich Archipelago, or face the consequences. With the world population and habitable area barely a quarter of what we had almost 1 century ago, our true colors are revealed, and our true Nemesis... is none other than us.
Truly, this is the fate of Those Who Must Endure.
