First forays into ship design in C#

A few caveats I've been around since SA played a fair bit of VB6 and even made some really boneheaded errors in designs before but never had a chance to really dig into C# (also been a very long time since I had time to really play) so I've forgottten most about ship design I did know.

So now I have time and with 2.5.1 out though I have a go, so set up a new game and made a few design choices that may or may not bite me in the behind later on.

First I'm going to try a keep all ships in use in a Ship of Thesues manor by refiting hulls unless destroyed by combat.

Second I'm going to grow ship tonnage over time as I need to fit more systems, this means many more refits over time.

Third always use maximum thermal signature reduction on drives, not sure why but I put it on the first drive and have decided to keep doing it. :)


I'm using [Class name] [Alpha] [Roman numeral] to distinguish refits. With Alpha for changes to engines and armour, and numeral for all other system changes

Here are my freighters and colony transports both built of the same base hull to start with.

Tip for new designers include shuttles on colony ships or its really hard to colonise the moon let alone Mars, had to do a quick SM edit to fix that mistake :)

Basic freighter design a cargo hold and shuttles with fuel added to round out the tonnage.

My first real military ships are a basic destroyer, using a laser and quad gauss cannon mounts as I couldn't work out a decent missile design and just wanted a ship built. :)

Having built by Tribal class destroyers I realised one big flaw I forgot the jump drive so rathe than SM edit it in I went the route of a destroyer leader class to carry the jump drive, i also decided to try my hand a missile design.

A hence the Town class Destroyer Leader was born.

One thing I noticed you have a 40,000 ton jump drive on your 24000 ton Jump ship.  The maximum size of ship that can jump with that drive is the smallest of the size of the Jump drive or the ship so , you can't jump any later 40,000 ton designs so it would be more efficient to make a smaller jump drive or Bigger ship.

The plan is to slowly increase the ships size via refits so I built the drive bigger so I don't have to research and built an new one for a while, the destroyers while probably stop growing a some point and I'll design a cruiser to take over as the main fleet combatant otherwise too much mission creep, the destoyers will end up in the tradional escort/screening  roles once the fleet is big enough.

This used to be the case, but isn't so anymore.

Jump Drive Size Requirements

When using a jump drive to open a jump point for other ships, the only requirement is that the jump drive capacity is large enough for the transiting ship. There is no requirement in C# Aurora for ship mounting the jump drive to be as large as the transiting ship.

Relatively small jump tenders or bases will now be able to open a jump point for much larger ships.

Good point I justified for this game as research now use till I can free up the labs for research either the tech and/or the new drives as I have only so many labs and scientists to use - the normal pressures of the game.

I will make new drives later on but currently focusing on kinetics and sensors.

Putting a jump drive in every squadron is valid, and may be more so than in the past if you're in the latest versions, but it isn't obligatory.

I've always focused on the jump tender pattern, scattering commercial ships with military jump drives to every jump point.

The B series of ships are marked by Magneto-plasma Drives, for the commerical vessels this was also marked by the hull sizes growing for two cargo holds or 140,000 colonists.

Some one at the design board asked the question of why all the tankers had a cargo hold as part of their design, and after many sighs the cargo hold was slated for removal as part of the planned C series.
