Military Training for begginers
« on: December 24, 2011, 03:55:47 PM »
Hey guys, I'm back. After months of wait I finally got my new computer, and I've been thinking of something that can train the minds of new people to Aurora on the 'Combat Topic'.

It's very simple; Make two different empires, give them tech, design some ships, make fleets, then pit the two against each other. (They have to be Human Controlled thought)

I'm trying to test this teory right now. They have maximum tech since I'm too lazy to manually put it all together.

I made two empires, the Combat Race 1 and Combat Race 2, (Hum, very original eh?) Comrace 1 is on Earth and Comrace 2 on Mars I made three ship designs (2 For Comrace 1 and 1 for Comrace 2. I'll put the designs on the end of the post.)

Comrace 1 is mostly focused on Lasers and Shields, (Even thought I designed no shields yet) and Comrace 2 is focused on Plasma Carronades. I made everything so simple both because I'm lazy and because its more simple to make, Missiles are way too complex for a test this young thought I plan on making something more complex soon. It's kinda a must anyway.

The ship designs for Comrace 1:

Note: The Comrace 2 main brawler, atleast for now. Looking for simplicity I made these ships to carry theyr own sensors and they are generally more powerful than the Comrace 1 ships.

Tell me what you guys think.

Well, I tested this first battle. And I learned three things: that distance and armor are VERY important things, that Plasma Carronades are total overkill and why everyone always say that Beam Weapons put you on some very vulnerable ground. It may come obvious to everyone that Comrace 1 lost. Badly.

The Gomagols took more time to charge their guns, (Mostly because I forgot to assign the weapons to all of the ships even thought I assigned to one of them.) and in that time the Messos inflicted some damage to the Gomagols. But when the Gomagols got their guns back up... oh man.

No Gomagols were destroyed but the 6 Messos were. The entire battle probably took around 30-40 seconds of Gametime. The armor of the Gomagols took around 15 seconds of continuous laser fire and, everything got absorbed. but after that they started to take damage, then secondary explosions ensued and Gomagol 001 got detached from the main fleet. Then just as the other 3 Gomagols locked on their targets, BOOM! The 6 guys got blasted.

Atleast now I know that I should put more armor on my next ships, and distance myself from anyone that comes too near.

What you say is true; however, if the ships from Comrace 1 manage to keep Comrace 2's ships at around 700-800,000km, they can pick them apart and remain out of reach due to their faster speed and longer range weapons.

My general impression is that plasma carronades need to be mounted on a ship that is faster than its oponents, or else they loose their usefulness except in warp point defence.

This is true of beam weapons in general, really.

Tactical games will probably teach that missiles are generally superior to beams. For campaigns, that isn't always the case because of the logistical constraints on missiles.
