Sorby's Ship Designs - Critiscism Welcome
« on: January 17, 2011, 12:38:32 PM »
I've played a few unsuccessful games in Aurora up to the current one I'm playing, and I think I've got my combat vessels at the point I like them.  This thread is about nothing more than my combat vessels, so enjoy.

In descending order of mass (And subsequently, class), from low to high:

Entry One: Edward VII class FAC
-This was one of the two earliest classes in this game, part of the combat testing I planned to do early on in the game.  It's small, fast, and packs a decent punch for a decent range.  Being part of the combat testing, its usefulness is actually fairly iffy.  The four box launchers were designed to fire an MIRV missile I soon found distasteful.  They now fire a size-five anti ship missile.  Its carrier is actually a frigate class, which is a concept I've had from playing a browser-based game (Back when I knew nothing about classes and their meaning).  It uses an old active sensor suite, too.  So it's long been outdated.

Entry Two: Invincible class Missile Boat
-When I first read "Missile Boat," I had in mind a large, battle-dominating behemoth that would not only have a large MD net, but be able to launch several volleys of large ship-killing missiles.  The actuality of this design simply doesn't compare.  It's now a missile-only design I plan to release in large numbers.  It took some effort to keep this relatively cheap and boat-sized (As compared to ship-sized), and it's done well to deal its damage, up to the point where it runs out of missiles.  The only major battle this design has seen was an unsuccessful test assault they launched a couple hundred missiles (There were nine of them), but ran out very quickly and soon got picked off by stray AMMs.

Entry Three: Hood class Frigate
-This is the unit carrying the above-listed Edward VII class FAC.  It can only carry one FAC, but seeing as I've used the two designs so very little, I haven't bothered to fix them.  This is the first unit to house a laser, and so far the only unit that doesn't house said laser in a turret.  Not that it can be a hindrance; Nearly all my designs have at least a 10k km/s top speed, and the only alien vessels I've faced so far are around the 4k-5k km/s range.  In addition to the lasers, it has two AMM launchers.  Note the ridiculously large beam fire control.

Entry Four: Iron Duke class Destroyer
-This is possibly the most useful ship I've ever built.  When facing eight alien vessels, two of these ships (Earlier on in their development, when they were weaker and had no MD), managed to survive a helping of missiles and take them all down.  Currently, it sits comfortably at the 20k tonne mark and still manages a speed above 10k km/s.  I haven't yet tested the Gauss cannons in action, and am developing a PD ship to relieve any worries I may have.  The Iron Duke class houses two twin-lasers, four in total.

Entry Five: Lion class Battlecruiser
-This is my to-be-built command ship design.  Much larger, much more powerful (Note the shield strength of 500), and the only ship to house a size-10 missile launcher.  It can carry ten of its own, specialized fighters, and even carries a battalion of troops.  Though classified as a battlecruiser. . .  It's rather slow.

There they are.  I've reached a soft cap as far as tech goes, so I don't plan to upgrade the technologies involved in the designs too much.  Opinions please. I would like to see where these could improve.

You realy like speed, it seems :)

Personally, I go for about 25% of mass dedicated to engines, whereas you go for something around 80%. This also makes your FAC not a whole lot faster than your regular fleet units.

  Your Missile Boat:
How about using 25% size launchers? I have been able to cram 160 size-4 launchers into a 24.000t Heavy Cruiser.
With Box-Launchers, I could bring the count up to 260, but would have to return to a fleet base to reload.
Sure, it wont fire a second salvo any time soon, but with a squadron (3-4) of them they can put out an alpha that should make any oposition take notice.

Two missile launchers are simply no good IMO. Of course, this is the result of devoting the vast majority of your ship(s) to engines.

  The Frigate:
I don´t know what to say, a 8.000t ship to carry a 1.000t ship around? This doesn´t make a lot of sense to me.

  The Destroyer:
Why not put the Gauss in turrets (with much better tracking), so they can better work in an Anti-Missile role?
Of course, a 20.000t ship with only four lasers and two size-5 missile launchers seems a bit light on the offensive side.
Other than that, if you insist on the ridiculus :) amount of engines, the DD looks good.

  The Battlecruiser:
Finally, a ship which does not go overboard with engines :)

A rather weak (and mixed to boot) missile armament. I never - ever mix various offensive missile launchers. Either go with all size-6 or all size-10. The only exception can be, if both, the size-6 and size-10 missiles, have exactely the same speed, so they reach the target simultaneously.

Even then, you would at best get a salvo of 10 x size-6 missiles - which, excuse me saying so, is pathetic for a ship of  50.000t

Good laser armament but holy crap, 50.000km/s tracking? what do those weight? Better put those in fixed mounts (It seems you   have researched basic tracking speed 12.500km/s which should be enough for any hostile ship and those lasers are a monumental   overkill in an anti-missile role). Put the saved mass in either more missile-launchers or more fighters. Coming to think of it, decide if your fighters or the missiles are this ship´s long range weapon system and concentrate on that one.

  The Fighter:
I´d get rid of the active and build a dedicated recon-fighter that lights up the targets, thus either allowing for another box-launcher or upping the speed, which isn´t something to brag about, looking at your FF/DD
Also, reduce maintenance at least by 50%.
Hm, shields on a fighter. Never tried this. Too much wight for the protection, especially as this is a long-range missile fighter, I can´t see the need for that. Removal would shed 50 tons from the craft, making it much faster.

Hahah.  Thanks for the input.  As you can see, I'm still learning, and have a few hiccups in my design.

To clear some things up:
- I like modular designs.  It's less cluttered and takes less time researching the few designs I'll need.  That being said, I'll probably keep the MB as it is.  From what I've read, its small size should give it less attention if I have other fleet units present.
- The frigate (And accompanying FAC), was a test design to see the workings of motherships in-game.  And, as I mentioned, I haven't bothered to have the designs redone.  Question: Take off some engines and add room for more FACs?
- The Destroyer is my unexpected swan song, so I don't plan on doing too much as far as alterations to its weapons setup.  The first design of the ship had no size-five launchers, but ten size-one launchers.  I added the size-fives and swapped out five size-ones for two Gauss cannons as an interim design edit until I have my PD ships perfected and in production.
- The BC is like a lot of my old designs.  Lots of power spread across several weapon types, but not enough focus on one to allow for any great success.  I'll probably scrap the size-tens and put them on a heavier missile boat class (They're slower and have less range).
- As for the fighter, I'll see about getting a fighter-specific active sensor.  Resolution. . . .  60?

Again, thanks for the input.  I'm glad I didn't have a very big hole in my designs (Oh, say. . .  No fuel tanks).

Few tips:
Reduce speed a bit.
Get all your ships aside fighters and FACs to a fleetspeed of 10k if they are faster right now, that'll save a bit of space and not do too much negative.
For your ships, the fighters are actually too heavy to make a meaningful difference, they need to be faster than your main ships to make any sense.
On the destroyers, two firecontrols should be enough for the lasers, maybe keep a third backup, so you can devote the freed up space to a smaller, short range but fast tracking Fire Control and put the Gauss weapons in turrets.

Regarding Missiles, keep in mind that the enemy has anti-missiles, you need enough ordnance at once to get through.
For your missile ships, the best bet is reduced size launchers for bigger, but less strikes, and if possible, try to have Specialized Anti-Missile Ships for everything under 10k tons, so your offensive ships can actually perform their main duty.

Personally I prefer speed - means you dictate the action especially if you have a good sensor ship so you can spot them before they spot you - if they appear too strong you can simply turn away and outrun them - Also - closing speed is much higher when you do engage - especially handy if you good in  close firepower

The trouble with your design Hawkeye is that if you don't kill ALL the enemy ships at only 3,000k his remaining 10,000k ships are going to run you down and shred you

This would be right, if the Executor cruisers would be operating all by themselfs.
However, a battlegroup would consists of 3 to 5 Executors, 3 to 5 Poenitor Armored cruisers, 2 to 4 Desquamo Escort Cruisers and 1 or 2 Lembus Scouts.
