28th October 3119 1000UST High King’s Office Planet Deaer
As First Space Lord Gryphon Isaac was ushered into the High King’s office he wondered what he had been summoned for.  Whilst the Hushnak War was underway the routine briefs to the High King occurred at 1300 each day.
‘You summoned me my High King’

Looking up from his terminal, the High King smiled and spoke.

‘Yes First Space Lord.  Sit down.’

As Isaac sat down, the High King continued, ‘I know you are wondering why I’ve asked you to turn up early today.  Firstly, I have political appointment that means the 1300 briefing will have to scrubbed, secondly I want you to outline what the next stage of the war will be.’

‘Yes my High King, I have an update that Cruiser Sqn #3 under the command of Deputy Space Marshal Iefan have intercepted and destroyed another FROAICH class vessel in the Sirius system at 0825.  As far as the Fleet’s next move is concerned, the victory in the Sirius system gives us the chance to gain the initiative.  It is possible that the enemy have more ships in Giclas 99-49.  The only way to find out is a jump point assault; unfortunately the best ships for the job are the Cymru battleships that are being refitted and will not leave dock until mid-Dec this year.  Therefore, I intend to send the beam armed cruisers of Cruiser Sqn #2 through.’

‘I see, the Sgarlets class cruisers aren’t as well protected as the battleships. Aren’t you taking a big risk?’

‘Yes, but the cruisers are of limited utility in open space and we can afford to take a few losses if it means we can discover the enemy strength in Giclas 99-49.’

‘Very well, I won’t second guess you, the conduct of the war is in your hands.  How long before the assault?’

‘They are currently on the other side of the system, it will take them 12 days to get into position.’

‘Before you go Gryphon, I have on further item to discuss.  I have read the medal board’s recommendations and I would like your opinion.’

‘The Board’s recommendations are reasonable, the Distinguished Gallantry Cross for Isolde Pearce is well deserved.’

‘I see, why no Distinguished Service Cross for Deputy Space Marshal Jarman? Speak frankly Gryphon.’

Looking decidedly uncomfortable, the First Space Lord replied ‘Despite being the commander of Battle Group Sirius DSM Jarman does not deserve a DSC, he rushed a turnaround of his fighters that could have ended in disaster.’

‘I thought you might say that; however, Conway Jarman has powerful sponsors in the Council of Kings that even I cannot just ignore.  I’m sorry my friend but, for political reasons, Jarman will be awarded a Distinguished Service Cross.  Also, I have read the combat reports and I’m a bit surprised that the Board didn’t recommend Pearce for a High King’s Cross; therefore, I am upgrading her award.’

Looking at the uncomfortable body language of the First Space Lord, the High King knew that his directives had hit a raw nerve. ‘time to smooth a few ruffled feathers’ he thought to himself.

‘As the High King wishes.’

‘Now don’t get upset old friend, I have one final directive for you.  I have decided to resurrect an old tradition from the days of the ancients.  First the first time in over a thousand years I am going to bestow warlord titles.’

Gryphon Isaac looked up sharply from inspecting a fixed point on the floor. ‘I’m sure the people would love that my High King.’

‘I’m sure they will.  As the commander of Battle Group Sirius, in the new year, Conway Jarman will be gifted the title of Defender of Sirius.  Now I can’t have the First Space Lord untitled and so I’m bestowing on you the title of Defender of Deaer.  Congratulations, you’ve earned it.’

Looking slightly shocked Gryphon Isaac replied ‘I am honoured my High King.’

‘Good, I’ll see you tomorrow at 1300 for our next regular brief, dismissed.’

The CSN announce the award of several medals from the Battle of Sirius.  The CO of Cruiser Sqn #2, Deputy Space Marshal Ermid Mills is awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.  The strike leader for the fighters of Carrier Group #1, Space Commodore Digon Bolt is also awarded the Distinguished Service Cross.  Another DSC is awarded to the CO of Carrier Group #1 and Battle Group Sirius, Deputy Space Marshal Conway Jarman.  For the first time since the Celts started operating in space, the High King’s Cross, the highest award for gallantry, is awarded to the CO of Cruiser Sqn #1, Deputy Space Marshal Isolde Pearce.  The citation mentions the heavy losses her outnumbered ships had inflicted upon the Hushnak before the other CSN forces could get into range.

12th November 3119 – At 1508, elements of Cruiser Sqn #2 CJ Coch Tan, CA Sgarlets and CA Dwayne Peel under the command of Deputy Space Marshal Gaerwen Boundfound perform a combat jump into the Giclas 99-49 system.  A thermal contact is reported on the JP for a new class of vessel (reporting name ZEUS).  The ships head away from the JP whilst they wait for their active sensors to come back on line.  35 secs after transit, the active sensors on all three ships stabilise and the ZEUS is scanned.  It has a mass of 72000 tonnes.  Assuming that it is a freighter or jump gate construction ship, the CAs close to engage.

As its fire control had stabilised Dwayne Peel opens fire and kills the Zeus in a single volley.  At 1509, Cruiser Sqn #1 sets off to explore the system.  Most of the JPs in the system now have jump gates around them.  At 1739, another ZEUS is detected at the remaining jump point without a jump gate.  Cruiser Sqn 1 sets off in pursuit.

14th November 3119 – At 1609, Cruiser Sqn #1 catch up with the ZEUS and destroy it at 1610.

19th November 3119 – At 0510, Cruiser Sqn #3 detects another enemy survey ship in the Sirius system.  They set off in pursuit.

20th November 3119 – At 2010, Cruiser Sqn #1 makes a combat transit into the Gliese 205 system.  There are no enemy forces the other side.  Unsure of which way to advance, Cruiser Sqn #1 returns to the Giclas 99-49 system and Survey Sqn #3 is called forward to survey each system.  Meanwhile, warships in the Giclas 99-49 system will watch and wait for enemy ships using the jump points.

21st November 3119 – At 0010, Cruiser Sqn #3 catches up with the FROAICH in the Sirius system.  At 0111, it is destroyed by a volley of Arrows.  At 0311, Cruiser Sqn #1 makes a combat jump into the Luytens Star system.  A ZEUS is detected on the jump point.  It is destroyed within 30 secs.  Another ZEUS is detected and the sqn heads for it.  The presence of the ZEUS and the lack of jump gates in the system suggest that this is not the route to the Hushnak home system.  At 2311, the final ZEUS is destroyed.

4th December 3119 – At 0111, Cruiser Sqn #3 detects another FROACH in the Sirius system.  They move to engage.  At 2213, the target is destroyed.

14th December 3119 – A breakthrough is made in the communications with the aliens in the Gamma Leporis system.  They identify themselves as the Grirg Entity.  Also, the BBs of BB Div #1 finish their refits and set course for the Giclas 99-49 system.  At 1313, the survey ships of Survey Sqn #3 separate and head off into the depths of the Gliese 205 system.  It is a huge risk as, if Hushnak warships turn up, Cruiser Sqn #1 will not be able to support the widely dispersed ships.

17th December 3119 – At 0443, Draig Goch 008 (Space Captain Erdudvyl Pearson) detects a strength 1325 thermal and EM signal from Asteroid #35 in the Gliese 205 system.  Cruiser Sqn #1 sets off towards the colony to start blockading it.  Now they have a ground target to assault, the 1st and 2nd Heavy Assault Divs and the 1st Marine Div start loading onto troopships.

18th December 3119 – At 0213, another FROACH is detected in the Sirius system.  Cruiser Sqn #3 races off after it.

19th December 3119 – At 1613, a new JP with an alien jump gate is detected in the Gliese 205 system.  Cruiser Sqn #2 moves forward from the Giclas 99-49 system to investigate.

21st December 3119 – At 1843, Cruiser Sqn #3 finally catches up with the FROACH in the Sirius system at fires Arrows at a range of 7.29M km.  the Arrows kill the target at 1845.

29th December 3119 – At 2145, elements of Cruiser Sqn #2 CJ Coch Tan, CA Sgarlets and CA Dwayne Peel under the command of Deputy Space Marshal Gaerwen Boundfound perform a combat jump through the unexplored jump gate in the Gliese 205 system.  Thanks to the intelligence they had gained from prisoners, the system the gate led to was quickly identified as the Hushnak system.  Rather than give away that they know the location of the system Cruiser Sqn #2 jumps back out of the system.

30th December 3119 – At 0045, another ZEUS class jump gate construction ship enters the Gliese 205 system.  Cruiser Sqn #2 engage and destroy it with a single broadside from the CA Stephen Jones (Deputy Space Marshal Ermid Mills).

24th October 3119 0020UST Roced F1 fighter callsign ‘Dragon Lead’

Digon Bolt opened the private comms channel to Deputy Space Marshal Jarman. ‘Sir, I must protest, this rapid turnaround is increasing the risk for the next attack.  If we push the crews too hard we may start having accidents.’

‘Space Commodore, you will launch in 2 minutes, you will close with the enemy and YOU WILL NOT QUERY MY ORDERS!’

‘Yes Sir’

Jarman’s voice turned to a more conciliatory tone ‘Digon, I want these Hushnak dead and I want it done as quickly as possible.’

‘Yes Sir, we’ll launch at 0022.’

‘Flag out.’

As the channel closed, Bolt muttered to himself, ‘Never mind the risk, as long as your medal citation looks good eh?’

24th October 3119 0322UST ‘Dragon Lead

B|olt opened the strike frequency, ‘Dragon Lead to all callsigns, open fire on assigned targets.’

As soon as he issued the order, Bolt could see that something had gone wrong.  Only WOLF, GRIFFON and his own DRAGON squadron had launched missiles.  The rest of the sqadrons started to report that their missiles had hung up on the rails.
With a heartfelt, ‘Dammit!’  Bolt opened the frequency again ‘DRAGON LEAD to all callsigns, Strike aborted, return to home plate.’

24th October 3119 0327UST ‘Dragon Lead

Bolt interrogated his tactical display, it appeared that the Bolts from the 3 squadrons that did fire had killed a TOBAC, a TOMACH and a TABHAIR.

24th October 3119 0643UST ‘Dragon Lead

As he watched the icons for his strike group formed up.  The turnaround after the debacle of the second strike had been for more leisurely and no fighter had launched until the deck crews had confirmed that all weapons systems were properly connected.  Strangely, there had been no word from the Fleet Flag whilst the turnaround had been conducted.  Now the strike was ready and they were off to deal destruction to the High King’s enemies once more.  It had appeared that the damaged enemy forces at the vanguard of the enemy fleet had spread out slightly and they would be attacking individual ships at a time.  There would be no overwhelming single volley on this strike.

24th October 3119 1330UST ‘Dragon Lead
As his strike group turned for home, Digon Bolt reviewed the result s of their attack.

By 0859, 2 AN FHIDIL class, an ARD class and a TAMOCH class had been destroyed.  The strike the continued on the next targets in range.  By 0913, another ARD and a TABHAIR had been destroyed.  At 1045 another AN FHIDIL was destroyed.  The final AN FHIDIL was destroyed at 1059.  At 1317, the remaining missiles were fired at various 13200 tonne targets in the main group of 15 alien ships.  The Bolts arrived at 1320 and a LEATHPHINGIN, 2 GOLFs, 2 SLIBH, a FOSCADH and a FOXTROT were destroyed.
The losses finally seem to have affected the aliens as for the first time they turned around and appeared to either attempt to reform or run for the jump point.  Either way, they don’t have the speed to outrun the fleet and were doomed.  After further analysis it appeared that the aliens reformed and had returned to their original course for the Sirius B component.

‘Dragon Lead to WOLF, GRIFFON and DEMON callsigns, fire on assigned targets
At 0341, the first missiles are launched.

Digon Bolt watched the tactical display as a bloom of missiles raced off.  The strike group had launched for the fourth time at 2256 the previous day and was in good shape as it fired its first missiles.  Bolt found it slightly odd that the enemy had made no attempt to fire at them; he could only put it down to the fact that they could not detect them before they launched their missiles.

25th October 3119 0720UST Dragon Lead

Bolt reviewed the combat logs for the last 4 hours.

The first wave of missiles arrived at 0347 and killed 2 WHISKEYs, 3 IASCs, 2 NOLLAIGs and the remaining ALAINN class.

The next wave of missiles were fired at the remaining ships in the main group.  At 0352, the reaming IASC and YANKEE were destroyed.

After that the strike group turned towards the remaining 4 alien warships in the system.

These ships were definitely fleeing.  At 0714, the next wave of missiles were launched.  At 0718 the 4 NOLLAIG were destroyed.  These were the last Hushnak warships in the Sirius system.  The CSN had destroyed 49 warships and 5 survey ships for no loss.

‘Dragon Lead to Fleet Flag, enemy destroyed.’

‘About time, Fleet Flag out.’

Edited to make the dates correct[/b]

22nd October 3119 0235UST Bridge CV Gorseinon

Deputy Space Marshal Conway Jarman watched the icons in his tactical display as the Fleet Scout Pel-Droed detached itself from Cruiser Sqn #1 and moved into formation with his own Carrier Group #1.  The addition of Pel-Dreod would bring his formation up to a Jump Carrier, the Ymosodiad, 4 Fleet Carriers, the Gower View, Ash Grove, Abertawe and his own Gorseinon.  Providing their anti-missile support was provided by the DE Gorllywyn.

Opening the intercom, Jarman spoke. ‘Marshal Pearce, this is Fleet Flag, make your best speed for the colliers, as soon as you can turn around and make your way back here.  We’ll have cleaned things up by the time you get back; however, I will need you to picket the jump point.’

The comms crackled to life and Jarman heard Pearce’s clipped tones reply with ‘Cruiser Sqn #1 acknowledges the Fleet Flag’s orders.’

With a broad smile on his face Jarman thought to himself, ‘That should put the snooty bitch in her place.’

Turning to his left, Jarman spoke again, ‘Space Commodore Bolt.’

‘Yes Sir.’

‘As senior pilot, you will be leading the attack.  Make sure you don’t screw up.  When do you launch?’

‘Sir, we launch at 1030UST tomorrow, the plan is to target the leading enemy warships that have masses of 19800 and 13200 tonnes.’

‘Very well, dismissed.’

As Bolt saluted smartly and turned away, Jarman looked down at his tactical display and widened the view.

Digon Bolt opened the command channel and transmitted, ‘Fleet flag, this is Dragon Lead, strike formed am turning for the target.’

‘Fleet Flag copied, get it done.’

Shaking his head, Bolt opened the strike frequency, ‘Dragon Lead to Dragon Strike, maintain formation and radio silence, expect to open fire at 1805.’

The icons for the other 80 Roceds and 9 Crwydryn R1s flashed gold as they acknowledged his order.’

Looking around the small cramped bridge of his fighter at the other 5 members of his crew, Bolt said ‘Relax boys and girls, we’ve got a long flight ahead of us.’

Digon Bolt looked at his tactical display.

<<View Image 15>>

Happy that the targets were within range, Digon Bolt opened the comms and spoke one word, ‘Dragonfire!’

At the trigger word, 2 sqns of Roceds opened fire, 54 Bolts were targeted on each of an ALAIN and an OINSREACH class ship.

Inspecting the missile telemetry, Digon Bolt saw that the missiles had 5 minutes to run.

23rd October 3119 1810UST Roced F1 fighter callsign ‘Dragon Lead’

As the missiles arrived, Digon Bolt inspected his tactical display. After the display had cleared it became apparent that, whilst the ALAIN had detonated in a shower of secondary power explosions, the OINSREACH was more resilient and another squadron would need to engage it.

<<View image 16>>

Opening the strike frequency, Bolt spoke, ‘FOX squadron, engage surviving target.’

As the new missile icons appeared on the tactical display, the accompanying information showed that they would intercept their target at 1814.

As he had hoped, the missiles from FOX squadron destroyed the OINSREACH.

‘Well Done FOX squadron, next targets will be within range at 1848.’

23rd October 3119 1848UST Roced F1 fighter callsign ‘Dragon Lead’

‘Lead to GRYPHON and WOLF squadrons, engage the final OINSREACH.’

As soon as he spoke, Digon Bolt saw the icons for another 108 missiles appear on his tactical display.

23rd October 3119 1853UST Roced F1 fighter callsign ‘Dragon Lead’

As the OINSREACH exploded under the impact of the storm of missiles fired at it, Digon Bolt opened the strike frequency, ‘this is DRAGON lead, well done GRYPHON and WOLF.  ORC, DEMON, COUGAR and DRAGON squadrons, you will engage the 4 BAD class vessels I have just designated.  Expect to open fire at 1959.

Bolt wasn’t keen on firing at the 6600 tonne BAD class ships when there were larger targets left; however, the BAD class ships were the closest and were suspected missile ships.  To close on any other ships they would have to run the gauntlet of fire they might lay down.

23rd October 3119 1959UST Roced F1 fighter callsign ‘Dragon Lead’

Digon Bolt watched the display as all 4 BAD class ships exploded within 20 seconds of each other.

‘This is Dragon Lead, well done everyone; 7 down, 32 to go. Let’s go home.’

Switching frequencies, Bolt spoke again, ‘Fleet Flag this is Dragon Lead, Dragon Strike is WINCHESTER, returning to home plate at this time.’

‘Marshal, 4 more enemy warships have entered the system.  This brings the total that have entered the system to 49.  All 4 are 6600 tonne ships.’

‘I see, when will we pass beyond range of the enemy sensors?’

Pearce mused on the information, based upon this it appears that the Arrow just out ranges their Atum missile; the significant advantage arises with the difference in speed.  The Arrow is over 5 times faster than the Atum.

As she stared at the screen, Pearce thought to herself, ‘Another 3 days before we rendezvous with the carriers.  Then |Pel-Droed will join them and we will head off to rearm from the colliers stationed at the jump point to the Sol system.  I wonder if anyone in the fleet is having an interesting time?’

At 1717, the Harlech detects the first thermal signatures of alien ships in the Gamma Leporis system.  As the ships in the system start to react to his presence, Space Commander Cardigan decides to turn the active sensor and get as much data as he can.  Aside from all of the data on the thermal cross section and mass of the various classes encountered one of the most important pieces of information is the fact that aliens only have 22000 tonnes of capacity in the orbital shipyards.

15th October 3119 1400UST High King’s Office Planet Daear

High King Llewyllyn IV looked up from the paperwork on his desk as the head of the Celtic Space Navy was ushered into his office.

First Space Lord Gryphon Isaac stopped the regulation three paces in front of his desk and delivered a precise salute.

‘Good afternoon, Gryphon what do you have for me?’

‘Good afternoon my High King; I have an updated report on the enemy forces in the Sirius system.’

‘I’ve seen the electronic report, those additional 15 ships means that the Hushnak had committed at least 45 ships to attacking us.  Has the report bee circulated to the Council of Kings?’

‘The report was sent to them 2 minutes after you received it.  I am led to believe that most of those who opposed engaging the Hushnak have withdrawn their protests.’

‘So I have been told.  Your Deputy Space Marshal Pearce has done well so far; what is your assessment of the situation?’

‘The numbers are against Cruiser Sqn #1.  They will run out of offensive missiles before the enemy runs out of ships; however, Marshal Pearce has already identified that and her last report indicates that she is going to concentrate her fire on the three remaining cruiser sized targets.  I have ordered her to split her fire amongst as many ships as possible after that.  The intention is to slow some of the ships down and spread the enemy out before Carrier Group #1 arrives.  We assess that Carrier Group #1 has more than enough firepower to destroy the Hushnak ships.’

‘Do you think Cruiser Sqn #1 will survive?’

‘I believe so; they have a significant speed advantage and have yet to come under any form of missile attack.’

‘Good, once knowledge that we are at war with another star faring nation reaches the people, there are going to be a lot of scared people out there; they will need heroes First Space Lord.’

‘I understand my High King; we will take good care of Deputy Space Marshal Pearce.’

‘Thank you Space Lord, you are dismissed.’

The First Space Lord stood to attention and saluted; as Gryphon Isaac left, Llewylln IV looked down at the intelligence report again, as he re-read the comparative numbers the High King thought to himself ‘Cernunnos protect you Marshal Pearce.’

The silence of the bridge was pierced by a call from the sensor officer.  ‘Marshal, the Hushnak appear to have finally detected the sensor buoys on their entry jump point, they have just been destroyed.’

‘Thank you Sensors, when are the first Hushnak ships likely to enter range of the [i[Pel-Droed[/i]’s long range sensor?’

‘Assuming no course or speed changes, the first ships will enter range in 25 hours and 25 minutes.’

‘Understood, Helm, hold our position here.’

Thanks to the CO’S EYES ONLY prefix to the message her rest period had been interrupted in order for her to come to the bridge and read it.

‘Comms, who was the source of this message?’

‘The originator was marked as from Deputy Space Marshal Jarman.’

‘Comms, send an acknowledgement, make sure you mark it ORIGINATORS EYES ONLY.’

‘Yes Marshal.’

As she rose to return to her cabin to try and get a bit more rest, Pearce wondered whether the nameless staff officer who used Conway Jarman’s name in vain would enjoy the torrent of abuse they would receive when Jarman was woken up to read the acknowledgement.  Maybe in future they will remember to look at the clock before sending out a CO’S EYES ONLY message.

Pearce watched the chronometer count towards 1557UST.  The Sensor Officer was looking uncomfortable; she knew full well that if her detection prediction didn’t come true then Pearce would not be pleased.

As 1557 appeared on the chronometer, the whole bridge crew seemed to hold their breath.  After a further agonising 15 seconds a new icon appeared on the Situational Display and the Sensor Officer called out.

‘Marshal, Pel-Droed has detected 21 Hushnak warships at a range of 1.6B km.  Actual types are on your display.’

‘Well done Sensors.’

As the Sensor Officer allowed herself a smile, Pearce saw the Weapons Officer lean over and whisper his own congratulations.  Pearce thought to herself, ‘Maybe the ship scuttlebutt is correct and those two are a couple.’

‘Marshal, Tactical, primary targets are now in range, request permission to open fire.’

‘Permission granted.’

As soon as she finished speaking, Pearce saw the icons indicating friendly missiles appear on her display.  For the next few minutes the squadron fired all of its offensive missiles at the Hushnak ships.  The three cruiser targets had 25 Arrows launched at them.  Unfortunately, the last 10 missiles fired at each ship were Hard Arrows with smaller warheads.  The squadron the shifted fire to the frigate sized targets each massing 6 600 tonnes.  Starting with the TABHAIR and two BAD class ships followed by a TOBAC and two TOMACH class targets.  Then an ARD and two AN FHIDIL were targeted.  The last Hard Arrows are fired at a 13200 tonne LEATHPHINGIN and an ALAINN.  Four volleys of Lances are the fired at ARD(x1) and two AN FHIDIL followed by another 13200 tonne LEATHPHINGIN and two ALAINN again.

Looking at her display, Pearce could see that the magazines were now empty of ASMs, all that remained were Dart and Hard Dart AMMs.

<<View Image 12>>

As she waited to see the results of her missile strike, Pearce was shocked by a sudden shout from her Weapons Officer.

‘Zombie, Zombie, Zombie, Bearing 237, Range 9.5M km, bearing directly, speed 1800 km/s, Strength 39, Time 2321.’

The Zombie call indicated that 39 hostile missiles had been detected.  It appeared that they were targeted on the squadron.  Looking back at her display, Pearce could see that the automated fire control systems had already fired the first 15 Dart AMMs at the incoming missiles.

‘Concentrate on your jobs everyone, those missiles are only capable of 18 000km/s, the Darts are more than capable of dealing with them.’

One minute later there was another Zombie call, another minute and there was another.

‘Helm, reverse course, take us back towards the rest of the fleet at maximum speed.’

‘Yes Marshal.’

Meanwhile the squadron’s missiles flew onwards towards their targets.

‘Weapons, what’s your estimate on how long before the AMMs are exhausted?’

‘3minutes 15 secs at current rate of fire.’

‘Marshal, Weapons, the last Zombies have been intercepted.  There are no threats on the display.’

‘Understood, how long before we are outside of enemy sensor range?’

‘We will clear enemy sensor range at 0418 tomorrow.’

Inwardly, Pearce cringed, the squadron only had 269 Hard Darts and 391 Darts left from an original inventory of 350 Hard Darts, 1025 Darts, 310 Arrows, 150 Hard Arrows and 120 Lance missiles.  Four hours 43 minutes was a long time to remain under threat of missile attack.

‘Marshal, Weapons, the last Lance has hit its target.  We only destroyed the FEICIM; however, another 20 targets are showing damage of various degrees.’

‘Understood, well done everyone, the squadron has destroyed seven 19800 tonne warships, three 13200 tonne warships and damaged a further 20 enemy warships of various sizes.  We haven’t even suffered shield damage.’

With nothing to do but wait until they left sensor range, Pearce opened her message log and read to contact report that had just arrived:

Deputy Space Marshal Isolde Pearce finished reading the report from her senior intelligence officer.  The information he had presented was remarkable.  She looked up at addressed the author of the report.

‘Are you confident of the data in this report?’

‘Yes Marshal, it appears that the Hushnaks have no concept of Operational Security.  None of the data was encrypted some of it had personal passwords but nothing that I would describe as a serious attempt to protect data.  Initially, we thought it was some kind of disinformation campaign but after interrogating the survivors it appears that they are so confident of their own racial superiority they see no reason to protect their data.  As far as they are concerned no matter what we know, we are not Hushnak and therefore are doomed to lose.’

‘So the last lifepod was recovered at 0824, and here you are just over 3 hours later with a major intelligence coup.’

‘I know it sounds unlikely Marshal, that’s why we have attempted to cross reference and collate as much data as we could before I brought you the report.  It really does appear to be accurate data.’

‘OK, I will expect Fleet Intelligence will be no less sceptical than I when they see this data.  Assuming it is real, we have data on 2 star systems, a missile type and one of their defence base classes?’

‘Correct, we have data on the Gliese 83 system, far more importantly we have data on their home system of Hushnak; unfortunately we cannot place Hushnak in relation to any other systems as we have no astrogation data on where the system’s jump points lead.  We also have data on their Carrilion Anti-ship Missile and their DEMOLISHER class orbital missile base.’

As the final hologram snapped into life around the conference table, Deputy Space Marshal Pearce spoke.

‘Now that Space Commodore Teage has deigned to join us we can begin.’

The hologram of the captain of the CG Shane Williams had the good grace to go an impressive shade of red.

‘Sorry Marshal, we have been experiencing some minor difficulties.’

‘No excuses Space Commodore.  Let’s move onto the reason for this meeting, how do we inflict as much damage on the Hushnaks before the rest of the fleet arrives?’

The hologram of Space Commodore Bidder spoke up.  ‘I suggest that we press home and destroy as many ships as we can.  The survival of this task group is secondary to the defence of the Sol jump point.’

Inwardly, Pearce rolled her eyes, Meagan Bidder was living up to her reputation as a tough and uncaring commander.  That wasn’t a big issue in of itself; however, her indifference to the fate of her command and her crew was.  ‘Thank you Space Commodore, but as we are a missile task group, once we are out of missiles, withdrawing and rearming would be a better option.’

The recently chastised Space Commodore Teage spoke up.  ‘Then I suggest we concentrate on the remaining three 19600 tonne warships.  Once they are dead, we can start on the nearest of the remaining targets and continue to concentrate our fire until we are out of missiles.’

Pearce allowed her eyes to sweep over each of the holograms in turn.  ‘I concur, the targeting priority will be the single FEICIM followed by the two OINSREACH.  The Intelligence staff seems to think that the FEICIM is a jump ship.  Any questions?’

As the holograms snapped out, Pearce was sure that she caught a look of outrage on the face of Space Commodore Bidder.

15th October 3119 – At 0048, another 21 ships jump into the Sirius system.  The head of the CSN, First Space Lord Gryphon Isaac confers with the High King and, at 0115, the decision is made to declare the Hushnak as hostile.  Cruiser Sqn #1 are given permission to open fire as soon as they are in range.  As senior officer for the task forces in the Sirius system (now known as Battle Group Sirius) DSM Jarman orders Cruiser Sqn #1 to engage the first group of suspected warships; meanwhile, his own Carrier Group #1 would race to join them.  Finally, Cruiser Sqn #2 was ordered to track down the Hushnak survey ships in the system.  Carrier Group #1 will take 8 days to link up with Cruiser Sqn #1, leaving the weight of the early engagements on the CGs.

The helmsman looked up as the door to the bridge opened.  When he saw it was the skipper, he quickly looked back at his control screen.  When the ‘Ice Queen’ was around, it didn’t pay to be anything other than 100% professional and completely focussed on your own job.

As she settled into her command chair, Deputy Space Marshal Isolde Pearce quickly inspected her status board.  Satisfied that her ship was operating at full efficiency, she selected the ship-wide intercom.  ‘This is Marshal Pearce, at 0115UST I was informed by Fleet Command that the fleet of ships in the Sirius system belonging to the alien race known as the Hushnak Combine have been declared hostile.  This cruiser squadron has been ordered to close and engage the enemy.  Carrier Group #1 is currently at full drive capacity to reinforce us; however, it will be 8 days before the carriers are within range.  We will be operating without support but have a major tactical advantage in the speed differential between our ships and the Hushnak.  We are the best ship in the best squadron in the fleet.  Attend to your duties with professionalism and we will be victorious.  That is all.’

Turning to her weapons officer, DSM Pearce spoke. ‘Weapons, what is the current threat board?’

‘Marshal, we have 31 Hushnak ships on the board.  30 are in 2 groups heading towards us, the final ship is assumed to be a survey ship heading in-system.’

‘Understood, the singleton will be the responsibility of Cruiser Sqn #2.  What do we have on the other 30 ships?’

‘The sensor buoys that Minelayer Squadron #1 emplaced on their entry jump point are reporting several classes.  The lead group consists of 2 SEIRBHIS and 4 SAMHRADH each massing 19800 tonnes and 2 EAGLA and a single SOITHEACH each massing 13200 tonnes.  All of the lead group are travelling at 3636 km/s.  The next group…’

Pearce interrupted her weapons officer, ‘Are the next group close enough to influence our engagement with the lead group?’

‘No Marshal.’

‘OK in that case we ignore the rest and concentrate on the first 9 ships.  It appears that we have a massive speed advantage; we need to exploit that to its maximum.  When will we be within weapons range?’

‘0627UST.’

‘In that case let’s get the crews rested as much as possible before we enter range.’

Pearce called up the ammo inventory for her 3CGs, CJ and single DE.  Everyone had a full weapons load.  Her FSC Pel-Droed was a key component of her force, but once the shooting started it was likely to be a high priority target for the enemy.  ‘This is going to take careful timing.’

‘Permission granted, open fire.’

As soon as she had uttered the word ‘fire’, Pearce began to feel her ship shudder as the missile launchers began to fire.

‘Weapons, what is the range to the lead ships?’

‘Marshal, 48.79M km.’

Pearce watched the display as the icons for her task group’s missiles started to appear on it.  Each of the 19800 tonne targets had 15 Arrows targeted on them.  Because she had no idea how resilient the targets would prove to her Arrows, Pearce had also allocated 15 to each of the 13200 tonne targets.  By 0633, the last of the salvos was in flight.  It would be another 4 minutes before the first of her missiles would arrive

Pearce watched the display as the range to target of her first salvo counted down to zero.  Suddenly the missile icons winked out; had they been intercepted?  Less than 2 secs later the screen updated to show the satisfying icon of a destroyed enemy target.

‘Marshal, Weapons, target destroyed.’

The Weapons Officer repeated the line 7 more times in the next 6 minutes.   By the time the last salvo had intercepted its target, all that remained was a solitary EAGLA that appeared to have weathered the storm of Arrows.

‘Weapons, fire another volley at that EAGLA.’

‘Marshal, Weapons, 15 Arrows launched.’

Killing the intercom, Pearce started to plan how she would deal with the next group of ships.

2nd October 3119 – At 2248, a new JP is discovered in the Luyten 745-46 system by Survey Sqn #2 (Space Marshal Steffan Astley).

11th October 3119 – At 1550, 9 Hushnak Combine ships are detected entering the Sirius system.  Their configuration suggests that they are warships.  Unlike the smaller ships, the presence of these ships and the threat to the route to the colony on Newydd Cymru, cannot be tolerated.  Consequently, Cruiser Sqn #1 (Deputy Space Marshal Isolde Pearce) already in the Sirius system, turns to confront the aliens.  Cruiser Sqn #2 (Deputy Space Marshal Ermid Mills) and Carrier Sqn #1 (Deputy Space Marshal Conway Jarman) are sent to support.  With the BBs of BB Div #1 undergoing refit, this constitutes the total of the available quick reaction forces.  The Hushnak ships have a speed of 3635 km/s, so the CGs should be able to control the range.

At 0842, the fighters launch their missiles and head for home.  The missiles are equally divided between the 3 targets.  At 0843, the first missiles hit the IROQUOIS dropping its thermal signature from 2500 to 1500.  5secs later the next missiles hit the CAPE and the LAKE.  The CAPE is destroyed and the LAKE is reduced to a wreck barely capable of movement at 912 km/s.  5 secs later the final 6 Bolts strike the IROQUOIS and destroy it.

At 1744, Gweilch fires 10 Arrows at the IROQUOIS. This missiles arrive at 1750 and it only takes 5 Arrows to reduce the IROQUOIS to scrap metal.  The task force heads towards the P Eridani JP.

26th May 3119 – At 1350, Gweilch, Shane Williams and Tan make a combat jump into the P Eridani system.  There are no precursors waiting on the JP so Tan ferries the rest of the ships into the system.  Once all of the ships are in the system, the task force sets off to make a search of the system.

27th May 3119 – At 1224, the task force detects alien ground forces on an asteroid.  At the same time a volley of 2 size 24 missiles is detected at the same location.  It appears the detected missiles are some kind of captor mine as they stay in orbit around the asteroid.  At 1407, the mines come within Dart range and Gweilch fires 2 Darts at each one.

The mines are destroyed at 1408.  After passing over the Precursor sensor site, the task force moves on to investigate the rest of the system.

28th May 3119 – At 0808, a JP is discovered in the EG62 system by Survey Sqn #2.  At 0938, another JP is discovered in the same system.

22nd May 3119 – At 2131, the message regarding Precursors in the P Eridani system arrives on the Home World.  Cruiser Sqn #1 (CG Gweilch, CG James Hook, CG Shane Wiliams, CJ Tan, DE Gorlwytho and FSC Pel-Droed and 2CVLs (Diogel and Gwrthwynebydd) from Carrier Group #4 are despatched under the command of Deputy Space Marshal Isolde Pearce.

24th May 3119 – At 1331, in the EG165 systen whilst en-route to the P Eridani system, the sensors on Pel-Droed detect a LAKE and an IROQUOIS at the JP to the P Eridani system (1.7 Bkm bearing 272 degrees).  It appears that the Precursors followed the Conwy out of the P Eridani system.  DSM Pearce decides to close and launch a fighter strike.  The aliens obviously detect the active sensors of the task group as they move towards them at 9123 km/s.  At 1517, the LAKE and IROQUOIS enter active sensor range and both mass 13700 tonnes.  The surprise is the detection of another ship (CAPE class) with a mass of 6850 tonnes.  This is not the expected Precursor strength as the HALIFAX is nowhere to be seen.
