Evening, Comrade!
Before I submit my designs to the Ministry of Cosmonautics, I wanted to get your opinion on them. People’s Federation needs two navies: a primary battle fleet to get rid of those… creatures at Bernard’s Star, and a colonial fleet to garrison our interstellar communities and to deal with the pirates preying on our commercial shipping.
We got caught a bit off-guard by those brutes at Berndard’s, haven’t we? You didn’t hear this from me, but they launched 10 salvos of 5 missiles screaming at 72k km/s at the Pyotr Kozlov. The survey vessel had no chance. We were unprepared then, but we will be next time. The battle fleet is to be centered around the battleship. This new class of behemoths will pulverize anything and everything those creature have. The all-big-gun configuration will leave it defenseless against the swarms of missiles, though. The battleship will be protected from such under-handed tactics in two ways.

The first is a missile defense ship. We can’t match the speed of the missiles of those aliens. Those eggheads won’t stop talking about how the AMM-1 is the best that humanity can produce. Bloody useless if you ask me. But if the aliens throw 50 of their missiles at our ships, we shall respond with hundreds. It’s only lightly protected and will stay well behind the battleship. Since this ship will carry the largest sensors of the task force, and it should remain in relative safety, it will be the best ship to accommodate the flag officer of the task force.

The secondary line of defense will be a pair or trio of destroyers. While I wouldn’t want to stare into the lens of its 37. 5cm laser, the destroyer’s main armament will be its set of rapid fire laser turrets. If any alien missiles manages to get through our wall of AMMs, these destroyers will surely deal with them.

Once the alien ships are spotted, we charge at them with the battleship and the destroyers, while the flagship provides cover. We might get hit a couple of times, but such is war. Once we are within a couple hundred thousand kilometers, the large caliber lasers will burn gaping holes in their hulls, and they won’t fire any more salvos.
Finally, the colonial fleet will be made of frigates and cruisers, along with our legacy fleet. They are faster than anything we’ve seen from the pirates, and even more importantly, these vessels can stay on station for years. Once a pirate raider is intercepted, the large caliber lasers can engage them from a safe distance. I mean what else is there to say? These are pretty much the exact same stuff as what we have now, just with modern engines, sensors, and weapons.

So what do you think? If this doesn’t work out, I’ll and up on an orbital mining station at 82 Orionis or whatever smeghole failed officers are getting dumbed at nowadays. But if it does, I won’t forget who helped me, I promise.

I would be pleased to assist the comrade in more efficiently preparing the People's Navy for its future duties. My first question would be, has the People's Federation neglected the field of "electronic warfare"? These are not mere fighter craft, surely these vessels have spare tonnage for ECM and ECCM components?
I would also remind the good comrade of the virtues of "subdivision": if the ship's fuel storage is properly subdivided, with individual tanks neither too large nor too small (standard Fuel Storage gives 1 HS = 1 HTK, while bigger gives >1 HS = 1 HTK and smaller gives 0 HTK), then the tankage can provide a certain amount of resiliency at only a minor increase in cost.

Comrade, it seems to me that this vessel is both too small and too lightly-protected to be deserving of the name "battleship". I have heard of these electromagnetic deflection devices, which the common sailors refer to as "shields"... could a place be found for such things?

I considered the battleship slightly thin-skinned; this vessel is positively fragile, and yet it is the ship expected to provide fleetwide tracking information with its powerful active sensors. It is a rare admiral indeed who can resist the urge to blind his foe, by targeting whichever ship is announcing its presence to the heavens with active sensors. On top of that, while this ship can throw out an impressive number of AMMs, it can only do so three times. Might some small portion of the ship's launchers be replaced with magazines, that it might continue to fight for that much longer?

This destroyer bears impressively accurate laser turrets (70k km/s), and yet their fire control is significantly lesser (25k km/s). Surely the good comrade recalls that such systems are limited by their weakest link?
Additionally, the 10cm lasers have a limited range; against the Dohm AMM-1, they would barely be able to fire once before the missiles swept in for the kill. The advantage of a laser-based defence lies in its ability to strike at range; if the lasers cannot fire a second (or more) time against the hostiles, then gauss cannon with their rapid bursts should be installed instead.

As with the destroyer, I must again question the point-defence array of this cruiser. The anti-shipping capabilities remain impressive, but the need to close within laser range guarantees that the enemy will be able to fire back, and even if the relatively thin armour is not penetrated, it will need repairs - which may not be available at far colonial outposts.

The 37.5cm spinal-mount laser is a powerful weapon, that much is true, but I must wonder whether such a lowly vessel as this frigate really requires a large slate of officers. Eliminating the auxiliary command position might well allow the frigate to be smaller and cheaper, and yet get more performance out of its engines.

I would be pleased to assist the comrade in more efficiently preparing the People's Navy for its future duties. My first question would be, has the People's Federation neglected the field of "electronic warfare"? These are not mere fighter craft, surely these vessels have spare tonnage for ECM and ECCM components?
Ugh, you sound like a researcher, transmitting gibberish over radio waves into the vast space, and calling it warfare. In my book, the way electrons shall be weaponized is by focusing them into a beam with a series of lens and mirrors of 25cm focal length. But then again, if this is what brings our sailors victory, than I must look into it.
I have heard of these electromagnetic deflection devices, which the common sailors refer to as "shields"
Hah, good one Comrade. But in all seriousness, it is indecent to make fun of the gullibility and superstition of the common sailor for believing in magical fields that would somehow deflect any kind of harm. They will be protected with layers of thickly packed duranium.
Then you will be surprised of the buffoonery of those brute aliens that seem to only target whichever ship is the closest to them. Regarding the depth of the magazines, you are right. The ship is supposed to cover the fleet while they close the distance, but can only sustain that fire for 150 seconds. The fleet can only cover about a million kilometer in that time.
This destroyer bears impressively accurate laser turrets (70k km/s), and yet their fire control is significantly lesser (25k km/s). Surely the good comrade recalls that such systems are limited by their weakest link?
The FC tracking speed is expected to increase the longer the incoming missiles are tracked, and I didn't want the turrets to be the bottleneck in accuracy. Thanks to your insight, I reviewed this interaction, and now I realize that the increased tracking speed is currently capped at 9%. I'll need to demote whoever designed that turret.
That's a good point. Larger lasers were considered, but they didn't extend the range enough to fire a second barrage against missiles at 70k km/s. Yeah, maybe lugging a large number duranium chunks will do the trick.
The pirates that these ships are intended to fight were never seen with anything but a few rail guns with pathetic ranges. The 25mm (and above) lasers allow the colonial ships to destroy the pirate raiders from a safe distance without ever being fired back at. The only purpose of the PD turret and the armor is to allow the brave crew of these ships to gloriously fight to the death in case they come across anything other than pirates. If anything, they should be given even less armor, so the resources may be reallocated where they actually matter.

Very true, the People's Navy is not a charity. Untalented shouldn't be crowding navy ships, there's plenty of work to do in the mines of Lacaille.
