The Shining City
« on: January 05, 2015, 12:48:56 PM »
[ooc]So, this will be the replacement for the FSNA AAR. I have spent the last few days coming up with backstory, and the current situation of the city and Earth.[/ooc]

The year is 2300, humanity's population is at an all time low. With only 250 humans living in the only place left on Earth with minor radioactivity. The incident happened almost 200 years ago, during an oil crisis near the end of the 21st century Russia collapsed due to economic tensions and extremists got a hold of their nuclear missile facilities and launched over 150 missiles at every major power. Europe was hit the hardest with almost every person in continental Europe disappearing in a giant nuclear explosion as they rained down on the continent, China and the Middle East suffered the most though. Within 2 years of this incident over 90% of the population of both areas had disappeared as stable governments collapsed, and areas already in turmoil collapsed even further. The Americas suffered from the radiation and the lack of a central government as Washington has disappeared in a white ball of radioactive fury 15 minutes after the missiles were launched. Now we find ourselves in Hope, formerly known as Portland, Oregon. It is the biggest and only city that mankind has left, but there is hope TN minerals have just been discovered and a life beyond beckons to the humans living on Earth.

Now for a little on the setup of this game, Hope starts with 25 research facilities at the cost of only have 100 conventional industry. It starts with 250 million people, and a dust level 580, and a radiation level of 500. Hope is a democracy run by what they call The Congress. The Congress has a secular leader who is elected by them to be their face to the public, but is otherwise just another member of The Congress. We're also starting from a conventional start with no missiles bases, and a restriction on the research of military technology until were encounter hostile aliens, since the incident in 2080 has left humanity sick and tired of war.

January 1st  2300 Scientists in the northern half of the city discover a new class of minerals they have dubbed the Trans-Newtonian elements, these elements are shown to have revolutionary properties and require more study to accurately gage what they can do. The Congress decides to keep this find a relative secret until they know more about this discovery, on the grounds of keeping the peace in the city.
February 1st The Congress disbands for elections for new delegates from each of 51 districts of the city and outlying areas. Within 2 weeks election banners, posts, and other advertisements litter the city.
June 1st The elections begin.

August 1st The newly elected Congress convenes and elects Morgan Norris their impartial leader. Morgan has a history in politics as a hard-line atheist who refuses to let anything get in the way of getting what is best for the city done. He is known as a person who does not tell a lie, but can be somewhat harsh when delivering the truth. The next election will happen on June 1st 2305.

November 1st After a few months of research into the new materials discovered at the beginning of this year, the researchers of the Great City finish and present their findings to the Congress, and after a several day long debate on how to proceed, they finally decide that the public is ready to be informed of this new elements, and the fact that humanity can finally leave what many people were calling their eternal tomb. The public reacts with a happy uproar, they had only just reestablished the internet and now they had a way to get off this radioactive planet. The Congress assigns their scientists to come up with a new propulsion technology that is faster than the current conventional rocket drives.

December 1st The general populace of Hope has been calling for a complete evacuation of Earth to The Congress for a while now and they finally decide to respond by sending out Morgan Norris to deliver a speech on their plan for humanity’s future.

Morgan, “Citizens of our great and noble republic, I stand before you today at a new dawn for humanity! We’ve survived the hardships of the catastrophe and we’ve come out stronger than we were before it. We now have the ability to construct ships that can take us to the stars and beyond, and we will finally be able to answer the age old questions of whether or not we are alone.  We, The Congress, will continue to rule fairly and justly to all our citizens no matter where they live in the vast universe, that is our promise and our purpose, it’s why our Great City exists. We must come forward from this abyss in which we have slept, and prove to the universe that we have not given up on the survival of our species!”

With that Morgan left the stage and entered his office, where he went to back to signing the long stack of paperwork that had been created by the discovery of the TN minerals.

[ooc]Really sorry about the lack of interesting things happening, but this is a conventional with a nuked population, so I guess that's to be expected. Any suggestions you have to help me spice it up are most welcome, and appreciated. [/ooc]

January 1st 2301 This month research into a new experimental nuclear reactor was completed. The city’s reactors are to be upgraded as soon as possible to improve output to the radiation protection equipment.

February 1st –March 1st The ground based shipyard of Hope is upgraded to 2,000 ton capacity, and research into a new engine is coming along swimmingly. A new military academy is finished within the city.

April 1st The Congress greeted the city with a report that humanity has just proven that nuclear thermal drives could be powered by the new mineral sorium, which would allow humans to travel the stars at a much faster pace than conventional drives could ever hope to.

May 1st The first nuclear thermal drive is tested by The Congress’s research personnel and is deemed safe for use by humans in space craft, although they don’t have anything they could put on a ship yet to make it serve some purpose to humanity. Research begins into sensors and cryogenic transports for civilian use.

June 1st – September 1st A new shipyard is churned out by the industry of Hope, and research geological survey sensors is completed. The Congress puts through the paperwork required to commission a new ship, which they share with the news as the true beginning as a space faring race. They lay down the framework for the London-class Geosurvey Vessel. The vessel would be done early 2301.

October 1st Research into cryogenic containers for colonists is completed, and work begins on coming up with a cargo freighter and a colonist transport vessel. The Congress designates that the moon will be the first colony for humanity to settle, because of how close it is to Earth.

November 1st – February  1st 2302 A couple of quiet months, The Congress recruited more peacekeeping forces in order to keep the land of Hope free of raiders, bandits and other miscreants. The radiation level on Earth finally falls to a livable level outside the bounds of the city and flocks of people flock out of the city in order to find unclaimed land for themselves.

I have the Precusors turned on, but unfortunately I don't seem to be able to turn them on post game creation, or atleast it doesn't save the option when it is selected.

If it is possible to gen a few ruins on earth you could have a little planetside war with drones and autodefences (think skynet) while you try to recapture old infrastructure and (theorethical) knowledge.

Apart from that i would suggest you get a govenor with a population growth bonus. Its realy a workforce vs. resource thing (you will run into a severe worker shortage pretty soon) in low pop conventional games - which can lead to some political and social issues if you like to RP.

Also try to get automines quickly and maybe some of your pop to the moon.

Back up your game a few times :P

[ooc]Thanks for all the replies and suggestions, I have added the Invaders, and I have added a large ruin to Earth.[/ooc]

February 1st continued, The Congress sets up a team of geologists, radiologists and other scientists to go out and explore the ruins left in the wake of the incident, and to scrape together what installations and other goods they can find from the ruins.

March 1st – April 1st The Migration from the city to the surrounding country side has been given the name The Great Migration, a name coined by the elite of Hope for those leaving the city, because of poverty and lack of land. The Congress although is having a hard time policing the countryside and keeping it free of unrest and violence as people have begun fighting over the scraps of buildings that remain, and they are also competing with Hope for acquisition of arable land, which The Congress is willing to defend with force in order to protect the food supply to the city. In order to deal with the tide The Congress foots the bill for two new garrison brigades which will be armed with the latest TN peacekeeping equipment.

May 1st As part of the program to improve infrastructure on Earth, a Hope science team has completed work into yet another modification for their reactors, known colloquially as Pebble Bed Reactors. The Congress immediately sets the science team to work on the next gen of engine, since they were lacking scientists with specialty outside of propulsion and power which was largely their fault since they set the curriculum at their academies. The Congress also sets aside money for the building of its first colony ship, which will be done sometime next year. They also commission The Office of Colonization and the Office of Trade and Freight in order to regulate the movements of Freighters and Colony Ships without direct intervention from The Congress.

June 1st – September 1st Work on scouring the ruins continues, but it is slow as ever since modern computers aren’t compatible with the old ones that are still functioning and it will take a completely new operating system in order to get the things up and running again. The Great Migration has caused a massive disruption of the economy of Hope with many factories being left unable to keep up with the demand for construction products, and other goods such as GM seeds and radiation protection equipment, this has lead to city-wide shortages and almost resulted in a large scale riot on the grounds of Warren Corp, the largest producer of construction goods.

October 1st – December 1st The shortages continue and are only getting worse as time progress, this has prompted The Congress to set up a perimeter around Hope in order to limit those that can leave and those can enter and for what reasons in order to lower the unrest, which is reaching a fever pitch. In brighter news the London-class geosurvey vessel lifts off from its Earth-based building site, although this event is over looked by many in Hope, because of the shortages.

January 1st Mars, and Luna are shown to be mineral-less, while Venus has giant horde of minerals, although it is missing a few key ones, the ones it has, with the exception of one, are in the millions of tons.  The Shortages on Earth begin to ease a little with the implementation of the security perimeter around Hope, but lead to increased tensions between those who live in the city, and those who migrated outside. Morgan decides to intervene, using his somewhat limited executive powers, in the conflicts by opening the giant stockpile of government goods to the public in order to avert a civil war from this unrest.

February 4th The government stockpiles and the shortages have all but disappeared, but the government has lost 90 years of stockpiling construction goods and infrastructure to avert disaster, with many in The Congress placing direct blame on Morgan, although secretly, because the public views him as a hero as of the current moment. Research into the next generation of engines is completed, and research into the next gen of power plants begins.

I want to make sure to point that your story doesn't specifically need to be exciting to be interesting.  Some of the better stories are quite dull at times.  Random events happen in game: leaders dying, discovering a combative NPR, finding ruins, finding an extremely nice system to colonize, etc., that will cause your story to change directions and be more interesting.

One thing I see here that I was expecting, and found interesting that it did not happen, is that you would have your city as one entity and those outside the city as another player controlled entity that are competing to get into space.  One the free rag-tag rebels, the other the aspiring imperialistic empire.

Actually the way I envisioned this scenario playing out, there is no rag-tag group of rebels, because there is no true government outside of Hope. I mean you have raider and bandit groups, but no central power with the military might(at the moment) to mobilize those outside into a single entity.

[ooc]Sorry, but the updates may become shorter, because school started again and this is my senior, so I need to put in a strong finish.[/ooc]

March 4th The Hope Military Council has just finished designing its first fully TN equipped brigade, they gave it the moniker of Mobile Infantry TN Brigade. The Congress also secretly puts funds forth for the fringe scientists who have been advocating Jump Point Theory, because of the relative lack of TN minerals on Earth, and if those whackos prove to correct, maybe humanity does have a chance among the stars. The Population of Hope and the surrounding countryside reaches 271 million people.

May 4th The Congress agrees to what it calls The Plan to Colonize the Solar System. They expect it to take many years, and that they may lose countless lives to under-prepared colonies. They begin to build infrastructure for transport to Luna.

June 4th – August 4th The Congress removes the restriction on moving to the countryside, which has become a major dream of many of the lower class living within Hope, but this time they don’t expect the flood that left last time. Work into getting the ruins functional and livable is slowed by repeated disasters with old defense systems and buildings that are barely still standing. This has prompted The Congress to foot the bill for a construction brigade to accompany the team everywhere it goes, along with a normal battalion to accompany them as well for defense purposes. In Hope the Military Council finishes designing a new TN battle group; they call it their Assault Infantry Battalion.

September 4th The first colony ship exits Earth’s atmosphere, but without infrastructure on Luna it has nothing to do. They begin retooling the shipyard for the Scotland-class Freighter.

October 4 – December 4th 3 quiet months, nothing of significant importance happens.

January 4th Today, despite The Congress’s misgivings about the money given to the fringe scientists advocating jump theory, they have proven themselves correct, that there exists points in the universe where the gravity well of a star interacts correctly with that of its orbiting planets to create a spot where they can easily bend space and time to accelerate a craft to speeds well above the speed of light without breaking the laws of physics. The problems with this method are that it requires a ship that would carry an extra engine designed to create the energy field needed to access the properties of the jump point itself. They commission a board of engineers and scientists to cooperate to research and design systems related to jump theory.

[ooc]A rather exciting one today, and I will hopefully be back tomorrow with another one.[/ooc]

February 4th – August 4th 2304 The political atmosphere of Hope has become full blown, with many politicians planning for how they’re going to get reelected in the coming election.  Morgan Harris has quietly decided that he is going to try to become chairman of Hope again. In the world of research and ship development, the shipyards have finished retooling for the freighters to be built, and research into a new reactor is finished. The freighter Horizon is due to be finished on the 23rd of October 2304, and construction of infrastructure begins in Hope. Research into jump engine efficiency is finished and work into squadron size and jump radius begins. Within the ruins of the old USA and Canada things begin to heat up when a group calling themselves the Sentinels begins raiding the science team and escorts. The fighting lasts for several months, ruining large amounts of research and killing 1200 security officers. Eventually the military command of Hope got tired of the guerrilla war and sent in their newly trained TN SWAT Teams (Assault Battalion) which make quick work of the remaining members of the group, and on August 1st the teams stormed the makeshift headquarters of the Sentinels , captured and then executed their leadership on the spot.

October 4th Research into gravitational sensors is completed and a new naval shipyard is churned out by Hope. They also finish researching their newest engine type, and they finish designing an engine of that type(ion). The Congress also begins working on an Earth Defense Station and the materials that it will need to arm it, although it will be basic because of the general public’s view on military technology. They plan to use Ion Engine driven missiles in order to keep asteroids away from Earth, or that is what they say it is for. The missile itself is called the Interia Missile, it has a speed of 15700 km/s and a range of 95.6m km. It takes a large amount of promises and other actions of good will by The Congress to be able to convince the public of the need for a way to prevent an asteroid strike on Earth in its current state, although the sensors to aim the missile are non-existent at this current moment.

October 9th Tragedy strikes Hope today, Morgan Harris was assassinated today in his office by a mag pistol armed combatant. The entire city holds a few minutes of silent for the death of the great politician.

Here is the incident from Morgan’s point of view:

A man works away at his desk inside of the chairman’s office inside of the main congress building of Hope. He is tired from the large amount of paperwork that The Congress has been churning out of late. He looks at the clock and sighs, thinking to himself, [Two more hours till I can return home..]. He continues to sign paperwork for another half an hour until he hears a scuffle outside of his office, he looks up from his paperwork at the door just in time to see a man wielding a TS-54 Mag Pistol burst into the office. The man’s eyes are full of hatred as he pulls the trigger of the pistol, putting 6 bullets into the chest of Chairman Morgan Harris, and as the bullets hit his chest Hope security forces finally catch up to the man and they execute him on the spot, because all they needed was his citizen ID device to find out all they needed to know the man.

After this happens The Congress holds an emergency meeting, in order to decide a interim Chairman and decide what to do about the incompetence of their security forces in stopping the assassination.

[ooc]The game said Morgan Harris died of natural causes, but I thought to myself... no he didn't and decided to have him die to assassination instead, because of how good of an administrator he was. He had like 30% pop growth, 20% wealth and industry, and 10% Ground Unit Training Bonus.[/ooc]

[ooc]I got a longer one for you guys today, lots of stuff happened, but no really "fun" things happened yet.[/ooc]

November 4th The first freighter is launched and gets to work transporting infrastructure to Luna from Earth, and The Congress finally decides on an interim chairman, Tyler Mays. Mays, is what you would call part of the old guard if he was part of the military, he’s currently 62 and has no desire to retire from politics anytime soon, but with that said he is still very liberal in his views having not succumbed to the conservatism that old age sometimes bring.

January 4th One of the corporations of Hope launches its first freighters among much fanfare, they plan to aid the effort to colonize the system and have set up contracts with The Congress, also the Hope military academy churns out its first sensors and fire control specialized scientist.

February 4th The Hope colony ship lands outside Hope inside the newly constructed commercial shipyard, and seats for passage to Luna are filled up as fast as they can be issued. Seats currently go for 9,000 Cruants(equal to 3,000$, or 4 months pay at minimum wage.)  The Congress disbands for elections, elections will begin on June 1st and end on August 1st.

March 8th Research into the last components of a jump drive is completed and work begins into designing a jump capable gravitational survey ship begins. Research into more efficient engines begins in order to extend the range of ships.

April  8th - May 8th Quiet months, not much happens. The campaigns are pulling into full swing.

June 8th- August 8th
Elections begin and end, also researchers have begun working on active sensors for the Earth Defense Base. We’ve completed work into strength 16 active grav sensors and strength 8 em sensors thanks to what could be described as tech bumrushing.  Research into better engine efficiency and the asteroid detection sensor is finished, along with joint research into the Planet Killer Detector.

September 8th A major breakthrough is made in the ruins of old Earth, and we know have access to the installations that were left behind

October 8th – December 8th  Recovery of the destroyed lands of the former countries of the world continues with new colonies starting in Japan and further into the North American Continent.  A Commercially run colony ship is launched from Earth and begins to make runs from Hope to Luna, and the colony on Luna reaches .43 million.

January 8th – April 8th Many things have been  recovered from old Earth, and many of those have stunned the scientists and engineers of Hope, apparently many of the Old Earth nations had dabbled in TN materials, but never fully utilized them, as we have found from recovering things such as fuel,  mercassium, duranium, electronic-counter measures so efficient we didn’t think they were possible, and even a terraforming facility of all things. Research continues to plow ahead on Hope, with several new research facilities that were recently moved into the main city from Old Earth. The terraforming facility shall be moved to Luna to begin terraforming it, and the first Earth Defense Base is finished, although it is unarmed as of this moment.

May 8th – July 8th Around 40,000 tons of Boronide, of all things, has been recovered from Old Earth, apparently the Governments of the world knew of these substances and had heavily researched them, but has never actually got around to releasing the info to the public sphere.

August 8th- September 8th The population of Luna is booming, in just around 2 years it has reached 1.43 million people, and the delivery of infrastructure to house new colonists is a daily occurrence on Luna. The Congress on the other hand is having a giant headache with administering Luna and decides that once a colony reaches one million people it shall have its own locally elected government, and its own rules, elections begin on Luna for the civilian administrator. 2 more terraforming facilities are recovered from the Canadian part of North America, and data from their computers suggests that these facilities were originally going to terraform Mars.

October 8th The First Grav Survey vessel is launched from Hope, it is ordered to survey the nearest likely points for a JP and then report back to Earth.

November 8th 110 MILLION tons of fuel have been recovered from Russia, why in the universe they had this much fuel is a complete mystery that will never be solved, since the Russian part of the Old Earth is devoid of still working military structures.

[ooc]My first time playing in a while, and sorry about how long it took. ;~;[/ooc]

December 8th – January 8th Quiet months, not much to remake on.

February 8th A jump point is discovered in Sol, 122.2 Million Kilometers from the Sol itself, and the Grav Survey vessel is told to jump using its jump engine immediately. As it begins to jump, it lowers the jump engine from a specialized compartment on the bottom of the ship, allowing a giant energy field to visibly envelope it before it disappears into the great beyond. The system it arrives in is designated as the Washington system by the ships nav computer, which begins scanning the system for solar bodies. Within 5 minutes the ships nav computer pulls up an alert that reads, near ideal habitable world detected. The ship’s captain Commander Liam stares at the alert for a minute thinking it to be a mistake by the nav computer before he takes a closer look at the planet it detected. The planet had a large portion of the planet covered in water, 99% by the computers calculation and an atmosphere of Nitrogen and Oxygen with a pressure of .87 ATMs, with day of exactly 24 hours, another planet has a large covering of water ice, and a nitrogen and carbon dioxide atmosphere. The ship’s captain orders his crew to transfer back to sol to deliver the amazing news about this system.

February 9th The Diet arrives back in the Sol system and delivers its news to The Congress, which immediately heads to work deciding on how to deliver this monumentus  occasion to the people of Hope, and within a few hours they transmit the news to the people within the city. The people of Hope respond with a vigor that humanity hasn’t known since the beginning days of the industrial revolution, with many people demanding that the government create ships to take people to the planet.

March 3rd Yet another Jump point is found in the Sol system. This one is 1.6 billion kilometers from Sol itself and the Survey vessel is again order to go through it, although the system just a Venus-esque planet that is of no use to humanity at the current moment.

April 4th Research into the next gen of terraforming is completed on Earth, and the colony on Luna reaches 3 million citizens.

May 4th – July 4th Many things have been recovered from Old Earth, nothing too exciting. Within Hope itself you will find a number of people lobbying to rename their government, because it feels that it is a product of an age when they didn’t have to govern things outside the city, but a suitable name has yet to have been dreamed up. In research news a new reactor has been developed by Hope and work begins on adapting it into a new engine,  along with research into the next gen of grav sensors.

July 20th When working with a recently recaptured research compound just outside of London, the scientists of Hope come across a computer holding info on a basic salvage module.

August 4 – September 16th 2 new Jump points were discovered and transited, but nothing of major import, except a somewhat habitable planet, that has sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere and is incredibly hot.

November 17th The first Jump capable freighters are launched to deliver infrastructure to Washington III in order to have  heating devices available to the people who land there, since the temperature is around 9 degrees Fahrenheit(OHH THE WOES OF THE IMPERIAL SYSTEM :P).

in the options display of the "System Generation and display" screen you can change from SI to your imperial measurements also you can change to Kelvin if you like ... just in case you calculated the temperature yourself.
