Small galaxies
« on: October 12, 2016, 07:14:16 AM »
How does the game work when you put in a small number of possible systems - 100 or even 50? Is it possible that you and the NPR will never meet, being stuck in unconnected portions of the galaxy? (Not sure how things work with generation; seem to recall you can get stranded in a tiny personal cluster of worlds due to all jump points leading to cul-de-sacs.)

When you use a formerly unused JP the game takes a random number from the possible system IDs (100 or 50 for your example) and creates the link. if the target system doesn't exist, it will be generated. If it already exists and has unused JPs, one will be randomly used. If no free JPs exist, a new one will be generated.

With your galaxy size, unless you run out of JPs, you will probably end with a very densely connected galaxy, simply because there are not that many systems to begin with.

Fascinating!

For an average amount of jump points of 3 (guesstimate) per system and 100 systems to generate, the amount of links will be something like (crudely generated approximation, doesn't prevent systems linking to itself, but should be close enough):

I tried. But what I wanted was an openable, clickable box, because the lists are very long.

I'm not entirely clear what that list was implying, maybe I'm just tired from blowing up Kerbals all night.

Twelve systems linking to one!
This used to be normal back in the day (ver 5.x - 6.x) when using the Real Star option. You would get a chain of systems (with 1-3 JPs, with the third JP chain ending in 1-2 systems) that connect together via Nexus systems with 8+ JPs. Steve recently changed it so standard games (1000 stars or so) have JPs more averaged out, creating webs of systems rather than chains linked together every 6-10 systems apart.
Give a man a fire and he's warm for a day, but set fire to him and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Clustering did make for some interesting bottlenecks and such.

This is what I wanted, yes! Edited.

I'm not entirely clear what that list was implying, maybe I'm just tired from blowing up Kerbals all night.

I've never seen more than like 6 jump points in one system in a standard 1000-system game. 12 is a lot of links from one system.

Actually, I did that wrong. Every number of systems will be just as interconnected as any other number, assuming the same distribution of jump points. The loops will just show up much sooner on a smaller galaxy - where you would need to generate 500 systems to have a 50% chance to loop on a 1000-world galaxy, you only need to generate 25 systems on a galaxy of 100 worlds.
