Error 3163 - User error or known issue?
« on: March 23, 2014, 07:46:51 AM »
I'm not sure if this should be in Bugs or here, so I figured I'd ask to see if it was a known error.   I did a quick search, but nothing really came up.

I think it's generating this error because the component listing for scrapping some of my ships is particularly large.   As far as I'm able to tell, it isn't actually stopping the ships being scrapped or anything like that, but I thought it might be an idea to ask just in case it's a more serious issue.

Do you have any really long squadron, ship or planet (or anything else) names?

Well, squadron, ground unit, and ship names tend to be between 20 and 30 characters, for example one ship is called HMS Queen Elizabeth CV-0091.  Could that be it? Planet names are as given.

I had this problem with my squadron names for my pinances.  Check to see if any of the names exceed the window size somewhere.  Look in your fighters (if you have them) and then in the individual ship listing page.

Yep - I'm 99% sure the 3163 error is coming from the database engine - it's complaining about a long text string somewhere.

Cool.  I'll go shorten the names.  Thanks.

Seems like the new suggested tech name (company names) are pushing me over the limit for and generating this error. . . can I safely change the fieldsize in the underlying database without problem?

edit:  Oops. . . the program is kicking out this error, but the research screen does pick up the new designs w/ the full names. . . I've now gotten about 15 commercial conventional engines of the same size from different companies . . . .
